Fun
Mixtape Time!
Dear Kay,
You may not know this about me, but I fantasize about having a bicycle. I had one, a few years ago, but it was stolen out of our shed by some scoundrel who didn’t even know that this bicycle had been a gift to me from my neighbor Kendall and it was special. It was even called Specialized. It was such a great bike.
Since then, I haven’t had the steam to try to get another bicycle. But I do dream about them. One of my favorite reveries involves a brand called tokyobike. See? Their bikes are so beautiful. I don’t even know if they’re good bikes, or the best, or whatever. I just love them.
This summer, tokyobike launched a series of playlists “brought to you by our tokyobike friends and family and are intended to provide you additional moments of peace, calm, discovery and escape.”
You can find all 14 of the Tokyo Slow Mixtapes right here.
My music craving these days tends toward the extremely familiar—I listened to James Taylor’s Greatest Hits album recently and sang along to every word. But what I love about the Tokyo Slow Mixtapes is that all this music is new to me. “Try something new,” they tell us. Easier said than done in certain cases. But this is really easy.
Start with Mixtape10. Or pick a random one.
And if you’ve got a playlist you’re loving, please share the link.
Love,
Ann
The photography takes my breath away. It is so Japanese. Makes me think of people & places I haven’t in a while …..Tokyo-sick, as opposed to homesick? Now to listen.
Oh yes…yes, this is nice. Feel myself unwinding with the first track.
Will listen while on my recumbent stationary bike!
My personal mixtape also skews to the familiar, but also often weird. My brain plays me a song every morning, and it chooses at random something from a lifetime of musical listening, from (almost) every genre, not excluding a Japanese koto version of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. Such a surprise! Yesterday’s Song Of The Day was “Love Is Blue”, the instrumental from Paul Mauriat, 1968.
So I will be happy to add something else to the life mix. Thanks!
That tokyobike reminds me of the beautiful old Raleigh three speeds we grew up with. My parents had ridden them all over Europe when my father was in school in Switzerland after the war, and they carried us all through our childhoods. Sturdy, dependable, no frills. I haven’t ridden a bike in years, but they say you never forget…..
There’s nothing like a bike ride to clear the head and put a smile on your face. Love my bike and ride everywhere I can. Highly recommend it.i say go for the tokyobike, Ann!
Same! Biking and knitting are my two sources of calm & joy right now.
I haven’t heard of tokyobike but if you want one, Ann, better order soon! I work in the outdoor industry, and biking exploded in popularity this spring & summer. Looks like they, like many bike brands right now, are also backordered til October.
Kayaks, tents, bicycles; all things outdoorsy are definitely hard to come by. Everyone wants to be outside where they can be with each other at least a little closer than by Zoom!
Dang, looks like you have to buy Spotify to listen to more than little blips of each song.
Hi Sue! You should be able to listen to it for free if you set up a free account. The paid version eliminates ads, but I just have the free version myself.
Excellent, thanks! (At first I thought they were just really short songs )
Amazing sounds! This is a great recommendation. Thank you.
I love Snippets! You introduce me to the coolest things, these mixtapes being one of many. I did a short listen and promptly downloaded Spotify so I can listen more fully. Not only am I enjoying this, but I passed it onto my 21 year old daughter who has similar musical tastes and she loves them too! Another connection between generations! Thank you for keeping me entertained and cool with my kids!
Also I have been on my husband for several years about getting bikes. I haven’t ridden much as an adult, but I live in a neighborhood with hills, as I did as a child (in Nashville, btw) and I used to love powering up a hill, only to turn around and coast down, letting speed take its course. No helmets then, either, just the wind in your face and hair. Good times…
