Back in 2011-12, there was an outbreak of something in LeRoy, NY, which is up in the western part of the state. Clusters of high school girls came down with an illness that looked a lot like Tourette Syndrome but was not Tourette Syndrome.

Were the fracking wells near the soccer fields to blame? The decades-ago hazardous waste spill? Or was it something even more mysterious?

This was one of those cases that my local paper—I don’t live all that far from LeRoy—tracked in real time as it unfolded. And the conclusion investigators came to was one that angered just as many people as it soothed.

Which, of course, means that it is long past time for an investigative podcast.

In podcaster Dan Taberski’s hands, this story becomes much more than the sum of its parts. Hysterical, the seven-part series that’ll conclude on Monday, focuses on this case but wanders into the Salem Witch Trials, Jello, viral videos, and international espionage.

Additionally, it tries to get to the bottom of how in the heck you pronounce “LeRoy.”

At its core, Hysterical is a smart look at how humans behave. “The brain is a mystery, even when it’s lime,” Taberski says—and I promise you that will make perfect sense in context, if you knit to this.
