Jill Draper is one of the true geniuses in the world of hand dyeing. Her fans are not a cult, exactly, but when you see the crowds at her open studio at Rhinebeck, the excitement is pretty great.

We crave the subtlety and depth of color in Jill Draper’s yarns. There are no dye lots—she works in small batches, so there is variation from batch to batch, and shading even within a skein.

Some knitters work with yarn like this by knitting a row from one skein, a row from another. We’ve never done this, mostly because we truly enjoy the painterly mystery of what will happen when you knit a yarn that varies from light to dark, saturation to desaturation.

Isabell Kraemer’s Petula Pullover featured in MDK Field Guide No. 10: Downtown is designed especially for Mohonk.

And you’ll find four more patterns we love for Mohonk here.

Note on Mohonk gauge range

Mohonk is labeled as a sport weight, but we’ve swatched it into lovely fabrics at gauges typically calling for DK or worsted weight yarns (such as the Easel Sweater in MDK Field Guide No. 3: Wild Yarns). Jillian Moreno discusses this in her MDK post “Yarn Detective: The Mysterious Phenomenon of the Gauge Shifters.”
