Georgia and Robert
Dear Ann,
I know we typically link to audio content, podcasts and such, on Saturday, but dear Ina just sent me a fascinating link to an article about Wanda Corn, an art historian who knows a lot about Georgia O’Keeffe, and so much more.
Here’s the piece in Apiece Apart.
It’s a rabbit hole that is well worth going all the way down. Wanda Corn articulates something that seems so true to me: “a dress or a chair [can] reveal something new about our country’s art history.”
We often think of dresses and chairs as superficial, unimportant or incidental parts of our lives. But when we make dresses and chairs (and sweaters) ourselves, they take on significance. I am always interested in dresses and chairs.
Goodbye, Siegfried
On another, sad note, the actor Robert Hardy has died, at the age of 91.
The 1970s British television series All Creatures Great and Small, and the books that it was based on, were a rock that I clung to during a tough time in my life. I can think of no greater gift to mankind than to give life to the eccentric, complicated, attractive character of country vet Siegfried Farnon. Robert Hardy played many other roles, including the lovable Sir John Middleton in the 1995 film of Sense and Sensibility (pictured above). As our friend Beverly Army pointed out on Instagram, in both roles he was surrounded by a jolly pack of dogs. (I am not much of a Harry Potter student, but I understand that Robert Hardy had a good part in those movies as well.)

What do you call this? Life’s rich pageant? Yes. It’s very rich.

All Creatures used to be on our local PBS station every Sunday in late afternoon, and I watched it every week. Such a fun program for an animal (and people) lover! I happen to have the original book in my TBR pile from the library right now.
My dad and I loved All Creatures…..especially Siegfried and his way of changing his mind and ignoring that he once held the opposite view. I also thought he made a great Robert Dudley in Elizabeth R (the original PBS show with Glenda Jackson- still the best show on ER I)

Cornelius Fudge! I had to look up his role in Harry Potter (you are missing out!). That’s a sad loss, but his seemed like a life well lived.
