Theme Time Radio Hour
Dear Ann,
Here’s a big ol’ rabbit hole for lovers of American music: Theme Time Radio Hour. This was a satellite radio program from 2006-2009, hosted by Bob Dylan, and as such I never would have heard it. But it’s all been saved, in one spot. You can find snippets on YouTube, and thoughtful YouTubers have organized playlists of the songs from the episodes, on themes including weather, mothers, coffee and drinking. Bob has guests, and the conversations are fascinating. He’s a good talker and so are they.
The YouTube video posted up top is a collection of snippets from cassette tapes that Tom Waits sent to Bob, offering morsels of trivia on Bob’s subject of the day. Tom typically begins the message with a word of thanks to Bob, for investment advice or a jar of marmalade; it’s like listening to your big brother and his cool friend and their inside jokes.
This is a trove that will last me through a lot of knitting, and give me an education in the process.
Love,
Kay
I have a huge crush on Tom Waits.
Oh me too! I first heard his music in the late 70’s and I was hooked forever.
I used to listen to this. Loved it. Spoiler alert: Bob Dylan tells the worst Dad Jokes ever!
What a treasure!
What I love about these radio shows are the letters from the listeners. Bob said he gets a lot of suggestions about music to play on air. Bob, in true curmudgeonly fashion, tells them “If you want to hear your own music, get your own radio show”.
