Lazy Sunday: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Dear Ann,
This weekend I have no choice about my Lazy Sunday viewing. The Code of Kay requires me to watch any period film which has one of the following attributes:
- Old ladies.
- Vintage knitwear.
- Windswept scenery.
- World War II.
- Actors from Downton Abbey (particularly the old ladies).
- That guy from The Crown.
- That gal from Sherlock.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (“crikey, that’s quite a mouthful”) has them all.
If you’re looking for me today, I’ll be perched in front of my computer, knitflixing with the Netflix.
Love,
Kay
A friend and I enjoyed it together to celebrate my birthday. Loved it.
Just finished Endeavor season 5…GLPPS sounds perfect…you have (I hope!) watched Foyle’s War
Such a good movie. Watched it when it first popped up on Netflix.
It was such a delight, in every way. Now I have to re-read the book.
I loved the book and didn’t know there was a movie. Thanks!
Also recommend Agatha Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence on Amazon Prime. Same attributes!
I am currently watching this. It is not a good book to knit to. Too much to see.
There’s some juicy vintage knitwear in there. I loved it!
I really want the pattern for that lovely brown reverse stockinette cap she wears often in the movie
I’m not sure if anyone is still looking for a pattern, but this is the most similar looking one I have found so far! – https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/guernsey-tam. You may need to have a ravelry account to download the pattern, but both the account and pattern are free 🙂
That’s the one I’m searching to find a pattern for, too! My sister- in- law wants that brown cap.
I can’t knit but am considering taking it up after seeing her hat. If you find anything on it could you let me know too? Thanks!!
YES, OH ME TOO! HOW can we find a pattern for it? HELP MDK!
Yes! Has anyone found or created a pattern?
YES – me too!
We read the book in my book club. I loved it. Then we watched the movie and I noted all the knit wear. The book was, as they say, better but the movie had Downton Abbey actors with beautiful scenery. I highly recommend the book and movie.
Loved the book. One of my favorites.
I’m totally onboard with #1 thru #7. Also, I enjoyed the book very much. I guess I know what I’m knitting to today 🙂
I’m in. 🙂
Also that woman from Doc Martin.
I turned off the trailer halfway through so I can watch the film…better 🙂
Damn, damn, damn. I was determined to not want to watch this, because I love the book so much….but I am sitting here in tears….it’s got her in it, and him, and oh hell, I’m going to have to ask my dear knitting neighbour when I can watch her Netflix.
Loved the book and didn’t know that there was a film. I need to look for it.
YES to all of the above.
Plus, totally enjoyable. Already watched it!
However, I am cutting out fabric while listening to Jonathon Schwartz on “The Jonathon Channel.” That is what makes my Sunday complete!
The Netflix version is excellent. The book is beyond amazing and should be read or listened to immediately! I went back and reread it the minute I finished watching and there is so much in that book to enjoy.
Wow–a new Jonathan Channel? I have to seek this out. I have missed his weekend show so much, despite the troubling allegations.
The Guernsey movie is fantastic. I already watched it last week. The Dutch actor from Treme is amazing.
PS to previous. We don’t even know what the allegations were.
Hooray! I just discovered the book a couple months ago, and watched the movie last week. I emailed you guys to make sure it made it into Lazy Sunday; after the third or fourth cardigan I thought to myself, “Kay and Ann need to see this”. Silly of me to think it hadn’t happened yet!
Watched last week while flying cross country. Loved it! Not sure that all parts were the same in the book, but I can handle that.
After reading this, I watched it. Loved it, the photography, the acting and the actors, and the wonderful old houses, and beautiful scenery. I can’t remember everything in the book and don’t think that it is exactly the same but it works. Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for bringing this movie to my attention-it was charming and fun to see all those Downton Abbey actors!!!
We just watched this over the weekend as well. I’m starting to think that Lily James is the new Kate Winslet.
Kate Winslet actually was set to play Juliet, but something happened and she didn’t.
Did enjoy this but wandered about loving a pig farmer (hmm). I finished binging on “Silk”. Now that was truly a great series. Hated to see this one end. Enjoy your potato peel pie!
Thank you.
For a wonderful movie, and
Finally getting my husband to renew our Netflix subscription.
We both absolutely loved the film!
I read this book a long time ago. Loved it. Can’t wait for the movie!
the knitting in this movie was amazing – someone needs to reverse engineer everything!!
I didn’t realize this was on Netflix – I’ve been waiting for it to show up at my theater! I will be watching it soon – I just read the book this summer. It’s a favorite of a bunch of my friends, but for some reason, I didn’t think I would like it. Ummm….. I was wrong!
LOVED the Guernsey/Potato Peel movie!! And the vintage sweaters were fabulous.
We have been rewatching Downton Abbey, so those familiar faces leaped out at me. Cousin Rose! Mrs. Crawley! Even Edith! Gotta watch this one.
I was really intrigued be Amelia’s knit cap that she wears to the market, with the smart little pin brooch in it. I don’t even know what to call that kind of hat to look for a pattern!
