A Day of Events with The School of Making
Dear knitter,
Are you curious about hand sewing? Do you have excellent taste? Can you be in Nashville on August 11? We would love to welcome you to MDK World Headquarters for a day of events with our dear friend Natalie Chanin.
Natalie is the founder of two companies we adore: Alabama Chanin and The School of Making. She’s a world changer, a paradigm shifter, and the author of the most beautiful books, the latest of which is Embroidery: Threads and Stories. We’ve received endless inspiration and encouragement for MDK from the beautiful, ever-evolving community that Natalie has created and nurtured for over 20 years.
Here’s what we’ve got planned.
Friday, August 11, 3–6 pm: An Open House
The Alabama Chanin and The School of Making trunk show is coming to MDK World Headquarters! Try on samples for size and style, and treat yourself to something truly special, from DIY kits, patterns, and materials to made-to-order garments.
Plus: a special open-to-the-public appearance by … our own MDK Shop! If you’ve been wanting to see and squeeze our first-ever yarn, MDK Atlas, in person, or check out our collection of MDK Field Guide samples, stop by! We’d love to see you.
The Alabama Chanin trunk show and MDK Shop open house are free and open to the public, no RSVP required.
Plus! An All-Day Workshop with Natalie Chanin
On August 11, we’re also hosting an all-day, all-inclusive stitching workshop with Natalie Chanin.
Both of us have had the good fortune to sit and and sew with Natalie. Those experiences changed our lives, leading us to a deep, permanent connection to the reasons we love handwork and handmade things. Opportunities to learn in-person with Natalie are rare, and it’s a dream come true to welcome her to teach in our light-filled home in Nashville.
Guests will spend the day making a Striped Scarf while learning basic hand sewing techniques, reverse appliqué, and embroidery stitches taught using die-cut grids from The Geometry of Hand-Sewing. This workshop is suited to beginners and experienced sewers alike—it’s the keys to Alabama Chanin’s innovative way of sewing.
Once enrolled, you will receive workshop information and the form to choose your kit colorway via email from The School of Making team.
What’s Included:
– One Stripe Scarf kit (if it’s your first kit from The School of Making, we’re jealous—the kits are beautifully made, by hand and to order)
– Lunch and refreshments
– All-day access to the Alabama Chanin/The School of Making trunk show and 20% off purchases (hot tip: bring a list to help make choices despite bedazzlement)
– An organic cotton tote and notebook from Alabama Chanin
– One-on-one instruction time with Natalie and the team
– All tools needed along the way—this is a crafter’s dream
Registration is through Alabama Chanin, and you can find all the details and registration information here on the Alabama Chanin website.
There are a few spaces left at what promises to be an intimate gathering of like-minded lovers of making by hand—and an experience to remember.
We hope to see you there!
Love,
Ann and Kay
Wish I could afford to go to Nashville.
Maybe I could be the winner of a contest?
I’ll settle for taking out my Alabama Chanin books and starting a project in spirit.
For those of us who can’t afford to go in person, a zoom option would be nice.
A zoom possibility would be nice or even a recording of the event available to purchase for a lower price?
Meanwhile I was inspired to order my second AC School of Making kit and am looking forward to working on it while being with you in spirit!
Watch this space, Karen! We agree that a zoom event would be fantastic.
Unfortunately, I am unable to attend but am curious about AC and the methods. Which of Natalie’s books is a good starting point?
Honestly, any of them! I love Alabama Chanin Studio Style. But they all teach the basic techniques and give plenty of project ideas and inspiration.
Oh, I wish wish wish that I could attend!! I can still feel the glow of my amazing 3-day workshop in Florence (how is that almost 6 years ago??). Hopefully, there will be another opportunity. I love Nashville & I love Natalie Chanin / Alabama Chanin & I love you!! 😉
We will get you to Nashville, Vicki! If not I’ll turn up in Wisconsin with a bag of stitching in tow.
I so wish I could attend this workshop!! Your email about the workshop prompted me to order the book, ‘The Geometry of Hand Sewing’, and I can’t wait to try some of the patterns. Would also love to order the scarf pattern and try the stitches there!! Just fascinating!!
This time next week I’ll be on my way to Nashville. Can hardly wait!
A zoom option would be very nice and a recording for those of not able to attend. Thank you
Any chance this will become an annual event?
Here’s hoping! We love hosting these gatherings.
Three years ago I was given some small beads.saved them waiting for inspiration. Everything comes to those who wait long enough . I’m fizzing now can’t wait to get on with it.
Where is the MDK headquarters located?
