A Paintbox of Yarn
Is this post a transparent excuse to show off my finished collage sweater? Why yes it is!
When I learned that my unicorn-loving, ice cream-eating, mouse-fancying little recipient was going to be in New York over the holiday weekend, I blasted through the finishing details. I managed to deliver it to her in person, avoiding the risks of mailing and leaping over my usual procrastination of bits like sewing on buttons and putting a fringe mane on a unicorn.
Bashful unicorn has a mane!
One thing I learned from making this little cardigan is that a dozen colors is about the right number of colors. Enough colors to have a lot of choices, but not so many that you lose your way.
And guess what: the Poketto Kollective set would be a perfect launchpad for a collage sweater. Pair this candy box of mini skeins with full skeins of a main color for the background, and off you go to colorwork heaven.
This beautiful box sets you up for picture sweaters, but it also comes with beginner-friendly knitting and crochet patterns, plus stick & stitch embroidery motifs for other kinds of fun, too. And it’s priced to make it easy to give the gift of color play to someone you love.
Details about my collage sweater, including where Bashful Unicorn comes from, are in this post. Dive in, I would love to have fellow travelers on this adventure. My first collage sweater will not be my last!
Thank you, Kay!

A sweater like a sticker album ❤️
I love the whimsy! I have to learn intarsia. For some reason it’s beauty makes me think it is very complicated.
Ooh, looks like such fun! I see a little nod to our fave Kaffe Fassett, too. I see what you did there! Love it!
Absolutely wonderful!! I can’t wait to dive into this. It will be in the New year though
I love your little sweater so much, and have started following @pickyfemme on instagram for the joy there.
What gauge(s) of yarn would work with the Poketto box?
It is so cool, so beautiful, so fun! How about one in adult size next? I absolutely LOVE the fringe and see how it could be added to other kinds of sweaters. Brilliant!
An adult one is on the drawing board for my 27 year old daughter.
The sweater is adorable, thanks for sharing. And made with love. I so look forward every day to these posts.
I LOVE it! I once made a sweater of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, using similar principles. It was an insane amount of work, but the yarn I used was way too felty, and it is long gone. Looking forward to seeing more crazy-hard creations. It’s always inspiring to see what’s new!
Sadness for the Starry Night!
I find that it’s not hard when I’m in the right frame of mind. Kind of like coloring in a picture with yarn.
It’s just that this frame of mind only comes along when it feels like it! But when I’m in the zone, I actually enjoy it a lot.
That sweater boggles my mind. Belongs in a museum – work of art and imagination! I will never make anything so complicated, but it inspires me to try some new techniques. Thanks for sharing your brilliant work!
I remember EVERY sweater that my grandmother made for me and I’m 71 !
I love this
Thank you Kay! Your sweater is absolutely spectacular and is incredibly inspiring.
Bravo!
Love this sweater! Bravo!
I love this! It’s way more creative than I dream about being. I can follow directions but this has a loss of cool personal detail. It would be fun to try.
Thank you for sharing!
