The good people at Shibui Knits, a beacon of modern elegance in handknitting, are sponsoring a giveaway for two kits for Amy Christoffers’s Albers Shawl from our brand-new little book, Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide No. 6: Transparency

The Albers Shawl, inspired by the textiles of Bauhaus artist Anni Albers, is clever (and also modern and elegant), perfect for both knitting and wearing in warm temperatures.

(See all the pattern details on Ravelry, here.)

The Albers Shawl kit contains:

Shibui Reed, a pure linen yarn which we are certain also contains the essences of fresh air and sunshine, one skein in each of the three shades of the background fabric.

Shibui Pebble, one blue skein of a nubblicious blend of recycled silk, merino wool, and cashmere.

If you play your cards right, you can have two chances to win, one here on MDK, and the other over on the MDK Instagram account.

I firmed up my knitting skills on a car trip to the Gaspe peninsula a few years ago and came away with a lot of them. The scarf I was working on for my husband at the same time was my out of the car travel project – miles of broken rib, in alpaca too slippery for a beginner to handle while the car was moving. Actually, even when it wasn’t, but you can’t really tell . . .

  • Hi! For travel, I love to begin (so it starts out small) a new shawl – and something simple so I can look around while I knit. • I travel with a shawl-like this one!!!

  • Always socks. I see travel time as a way to experiment with new stitches and patterns. Sock knitting has also been a great conversation-opener. So many people theses days don’t know that socks can be hand made. And then there are the friendly knitters who pull out their projects …

  • Charter member of the sisterhood of the traveling socks. Also usually have a ball of dishcloth cotton with me and a couple of patterns memorized.

I like to travel with at least one fingering weifht and one DK/worsted weight project, preferably one that is simple/mindless or one that I can finish on the trip (such as a hat in winter) and one that might require a little more attention, so I have choices. In short, it can’t be too plain/boring but it really can’t be too complicated either — learned that when I tried to knit a very fancy lace shawl on vacation — the kind where QUIT INTERRUPTING ME I LOST MY PLACE AGAIN. I always choose something in fingering-weight yarn so it takes longer … but it does have to be finishable or I lose hope. Most recently I’ve done shawlettes and baby sweaters.

  • Anything with an easy pattern so I can enjoy scenery and conversations along the way!

  • Always “vanilla” socks. So portable and simple enough that I can usually remember the pattern should I lose it.

  • Right now my travel project is Susan Ashcroft’s “Belgian Waffle”. The stitch pattern is easily remembered and it’s easy to read your knitting to see where you are.
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/belgian-waffle-boomerang

  • I love a compact shawlette as a to-go project, or a pair of simple socks. Something that doesn’t involve too much concentration, so it’s suitable for social situations.

  • Forgot to add, my favorite travel project is a scarf or cowl.

  • Socks! Then when they are all finished, I think of them as my Jackson Hole socks, my Colorado socks, or my Chicago socks. They forever remain associated with the place I was visiting. Fun!

  • I have to go with small and mindless for travel knitting due to 2 small children in tow. 😉 Like a simple shawl in its early stage, hat or something for the kids.

  • Another traveling sock knitter here. Wrist warmers are also a nice, small project to bring along!

  • I enjoy working on wraps, and they have to be on circular needles!

  • Usually socks for traveling, but currently am on a camping trip and working on a shawl. Winter sea is the name…easy knit and purl…no lace work to mess me up!!

  • Socks! (And my favorite souvenir for vacation travel is sock yarn.)

  • I always take socks with me.

  • I like something that doesn’t send me to a pattern constantly. I like to travel knitting the Hitchhiker Scarf.

  • my favorite travel knitting project is my churchmouse poncho in mad tosh!

  • That shawl is beautiful! My favorite travel (and waiting for children) project is socks. Easy to pack and pick up where I left off.

  • Deciding on my travel knitting project is usually the first thing I do when getting ready for a trip. Next week I’ll be in the car for a few hours with my husband, who fortunately likes to do most of the driving. I was thinking about which small, easy WIP I would bring but writing this gave me the idea that I could finish the log cabin blanket I have been working on for too many years! I will have lots of car time but I could still bring socks or a scarf for once I get there and have time hanging out with my relatives. If I only have the blanket easily available in the car, I could get it done finally. It’s one big piece of log cabin so when the knitting is done it’s done, as I work in the ends as I go along. I already feel relieved just thinking about it! Now I better order my new field guide. (I recently finished a Windows Pane shawl by Casapinka and have been thinking about other ways to use the technique so the Albers shawl intrigues me.)

  • I usually try for something small while traveling – a scarf/shawl, cowl, socks or a component to a larger project – like a square or something – this kit would be the perfect travel knit for summer

  • My favorite travel knitting is an easy shawl or socks.

  • Currently it is shawl and the finish is in sight Would love to teplace it with this

  • My travel knitting is anything that does not require a pattern. Currently it is Alexandra’s Airplane Shawl!

  • Socks! Always socks for travel knitting.

  • Socks, socks, socks. On the needles – Socks of Kindness

  • My favorite travel knitting project is whatever I’m working on ! I’m a Mama to a toddler so I take whatever time I can get on whatever project (she is currently claiming all over my legs and using them as her personal lounge spot)!

  • Actually, shawls are my go-to knit for travelling, they are small & portable. Yes, socks are too but I prefer shawls, I get bored with socks. I am a sweater knitter & they can be cumbersome to travel with so a shawl it is!

  • Socks! Thanks for the chance at this gorgeous linen.

  • I’m in the sock camp for travel knitting projects.

  • My favorite travel knitting is, of course, socks! Top-down, Magic Loop, one at a time 🙂

  • My travel knitting has to be a simple pattern on circular needles…usually hats, cowls, or the Airplane Scarf.

  • My forever favorite travel project is some variation of the garter stitch shawl/wrap.

  • Socks! Almost always a plain vanilla pattern with an interesting yarn. Sometimes I’ll work on a hat. If I’m flying it needs to fit in a small purse. If it’s a car trip I want to also enjoy the scenery and read the map – so it needs to be simple.

    • I have s diagonal asymmetrical shawl, all garter stitch with two alternating colors and then a block of a pop color (not there yet). I call this my AMTRAK scarf because I only work on it while riding the train. It’s very relaxing, I use a circular needle so I don’t annoy any other passengers. Its on my Ravelry page. (Jerseygirl65 on Ravelry). Thank you.

  • Intellectually, I’d choose socks, but I don’t like knitting socks (just like wearing them and spending hours looking at sock pattern books). So, for me it’s a shawl kind-of project. It can even be a little complicated. Odd, I know.

  • Alexandra’s Airplane Scarf! All in the round and it’s versatile for a number of yarn weights.

  • I travel a lot for work, so I always have a pair of socks and a shawl to knit.

  • I tend to crochet more than knit when on a plane, and usually it is a shawl. in the car, I knit, and then I knit some more…

  • definitely travel with a shawl project, especially love iceland shawl patterns, the Nordic Wind and Hyrna are two i’ve found so comforting to travel with….lori

  • I am getting back into knitting after 20 years so I like simple projects I can knit while somewhat distracted by the scenery and car conversations.

  • I travel with hexipuffs from the bee keeper’s quilt. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/CathV-S/the-beekeepers-quilt
or hats depending on what groove I’m in.

  • Socks and shawls for me!

  • I like to knit simple scarves or shawls that don’t take a lot of room.

  • Socks are my travel go to.

    • Hats or cowls. No thinking required!

  • Knitting a shawl is my go-to project on my going to someplace awesome, and going to home afterwards! Thanks!

  • My favourite travel knitting projects are scarves, small shawls and cowls…I love wearing them.

  • My favorite travel projects are cowls

  • Dishcloths because I haven’t tackled socks yet, but I will next project.(unless I win a shawl kit, lol). Thank you.

  • Always have 2, a small one for planes and something larger for down time.

  • I love cowls! They are super portable, and fun, pops of color. Plus every time I wear it, I am reminded of where I was while knitting. It works at least as well as a photo album for taking me back to the m9ment.

  • I love to have socks in one project bag and a shawl in the other!

  • For traveling in a plane or car, i like knitting scarves, shawls, cowls as they are fairly small and easy to stow away when needed.

  • Mindless knitting for travel! That’s me!

  • I usually don’t go anywhere without a sock project!

  • My favorite travel knitting project is socks or hats. But I can take any project on a road trip!

  • Socks and mittens!

  • I spend more time thinking about the project appropriate for the trip than the clothes appropriate for the trip!!! I am a happy traveler!

  • whatever I am working on that is simple enough and whatever needs some extra hustle–shawl, socks, or hat, usually.

  • My current travel knitting is a children’s pullover in fingering weight yarn! #simpleknittedtubesftw

  • Whatever project I’m working on is fine for a car trip. Even simple shawls or hats would be great for a plane journey or cruise.

  • My favorite is a shawl with a modular pattern that I have memorized. Sometimes it is just a garter stitch triangular shawl in fun colors.

  • I’m not proud, all knitting is travel knitting if it fits in my carryon or the backseat of the car. This has led to some interesting dilemmas though.

  • I always travel with knitting – usually a small shawl or cowl, sometimes socks. Always on circs so I don’t loose a needle.

  • My favorite travel knit is a peds sock, when the weather is cooler it’s sometimes fingerless mitts from leftover sock yarn.

  • I’ll knit anything “mindless” in the car, preferably when I’m not driving!

  • My favorite travel project is a hat! They are compact to make and fun to wear after and also great gifts.

  • Socks or hats are my travel favs.

  • I am already subscribed to Snippets 🙂
lately, my favorite travel project has been marianna’s onesie patterns

  • Lately it’s been the cowl, Wolkig by Martina Behm. Always have one on the needles…

  • My favorite to-go knitting project is garter/seed stitch squares (any size, to be sewn together whenever I have enough squares finished).

  • I use circular needles for travel projects. Small projects, usually hats or cowls, for airplanes; kids’ sweaters or scarves for car trips.
    PS this shawl is beautiful!

  • If I win it, this shawl would definitely be it. But really, shawls or anything stockinette or garter where I don’t have to focus… even a sweater if I’m not at a shaping portion. Easily memorized lace patterns as well– less weight to pack.

  • I worked on a fisherman knit sweater (complete with bobbles!) in a beautiful brown wool while traveling back and forth to college on a Greyhound bus. So many years ago. Wish I still had that sweater.

  • my favorite travel knit is something with parts like blanket squares that repeat but are small and easy to pack.

  • The body of a raglan sweater- miles of simple stockinette stitch .

  • I do a lot of lace knitting, so I always take a shawl.

  • I always have a pair of socks on the needles, easy to pick up and take along when I travel.

  • Usually I have a scarf, cowl or socks as a travel project.

  • Hats and scarves are my preferred travel projects…easy, mindless, and small.

  • My favorite travel knit is hats, especially baby hats. Or anything not to big with long stretches of no fancy colorwork or shaping.

  • Shawls, always shawls. Once an Age of Brass and Steam of a lace weight on #8 needles. Once a Multnomah of a lovely yellow. I’m currently preparing to knit a Guernsey Triangle and we’ll see how much summer traveling that will cover.

  • My favorite travel project is generally whatever is on my needles. I like something a little smaller for plane trips. I always have to drive so I never get to knit in the car. But taking my knitting out and about, it is generally a simple or fairly simple project – something I can chat and knit.

  • My travel knits used to be socks, but I’m finding more shawls on my needles when I travel now.

  • Newborn caps

  • My favorite travel project is my ten stitch blanket.

  • My favorite carry along is socks.

  • Travel projects vary depending on mode of travel, of course! Daily commute must be fairly small and interruptable. If there is a road trip involved, simple patterns but size is no object because conversations and scenery must be attended to. Train journeys depend on length of trip as to complexity of the project.

  • We’re headed to Florida in a week & I’ll be packing my regular travel knitting pack. First, something to knit in the car. That should be something very basic, preferably a stockinette something. Then, when we get there, I will have brought at least 5 or 6 WIPs. It is very important to bring LOTS of projects in case you get stuck on one, you still have something to fall back on (not that has ever happened to me ).

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a cowl. I’ve done several in both warm and cool weather yarns. I usually choose a fairly simple pattern, but one with enough interest so I don’t get too bored on a 4+ hour flight and one which doesn’t need a lot of stitch markers, as I’m bound to lose at least one along the way.

  • An easily memorized pattern or a project without a pattern! I cannot imagine having to refer to a chart or detailed instructions all the time. Once I took my Les Miserables scarf on a trip to India. It is just miles of stockinette with dropped stitches, then lightly felted. It was perfect to work on now and again, and on the long plane rides.

Stockinette socks on magic loop would be great too.

  • One of the most exciting parts about planning a trip is choosing my travel project! I like to choose a yarn or pattern that I’ve been saving and incorporate my knitting excitement into my travel experience. Socks can be fun, but I also love shawls, hats, or baby garments.

    Thanks for the generous giveaway!

    (Chavahsdaughter on Ravelry)

  • Always socks!

  • Shawls or wraps.

  • My travel projects in the car are almost anything, depends upon whether I want mindless knitting or a more complicated pattern

  • In the winter I travel with a hat in progress. Lately I’ve been working on a simple shawl. It has to fit in my knitting bag!

  • Like many others, my favorite travel project is socks! So portable. Especially plain vanilla socks, so I hardly even have to think about what I’m doing! Plenty of attention span left over for the airplane movies and free drinks 😉

  • Currently traveling around with a Hitchhiker shawl growing on my needles!

  • I used to like cowls for travel knitting, but have recently taken up knitting socks; I’ve heard how good they are as a travel project and I can’t wait to try it.

  • My go-to travel knitting is socks! I mean that’s my go-to anytime knitting, but whatever LOL

  • I always take knitting my “favorite” is whatever I am working on at the time. I also always discard on trips socks, underwear so I can come home with new yarn in my carryon!

  • Socks, hands down. The finished project takes up about as much room as the supplies, making them easy to manage.

  • My favorite travel knit is socks too!

  • My favorite travel knitting is whatever is most portable and fits the method of travel and season (I avoid big, multi-skein projects on airplanes and heavy woolly projects in summer!). Hats, mittens, socks, dishcloths, tiny sweaters, shawls, amigurumi… Sometimes a knitting themed book is my favorite travel knitting!

  • Love socks and hats for travel projects. Both are compact and the small bag fits easily in my purse.

  • Hats, socks or shawls. Things that don’t need to be seamed to finish!

  • I’ve really been into cowls lately, they travel well and keep my interest!

  • This summer it will be an ethereal intarsia shawl, of course

  • Currently my travel project is wrist warmers for holiday gifts! I plan to have at least 3 pair waiting in the gift closet by Dec 1!

  • I like to travel with everything.

  • Usually it’s socks but I just got yarn for a 10 stitch blanket. Just 10 stitches on the needles throughout and no seaming.

  • For travel, the item cannot be too large, of course, but the type of item is less important than that the pattern is fairly mindless.

  • An easy to memorize scarf.

  • I usually take a hat when I’m on the go

  • Shawls and scarves in an uncomplicated (think garter or stockinette) are perfect traveling companions. I try to have one on the needles and in my bag at all times for those inevitable delays, waiting rooms, etc.

  • I am obsessed with shawls right now. So easy to work on when traveling.

  • Socks are portable, but I like long, repetitive projects where the patterns are easy to memorize and not hard to pick up if I’m interrupted.

  • My favorite travel project is a shawl – long enough to keep me busy the whole time I’m away.

  • My favorite travel project is socks because they are so easily carried around.

  • Something on circulars , mindless and fits in carry on. Usually a wrap or body of a sweater if lightweight.

  • My favorite travel knit is something small. Either socks or fingerless gloves are always perfect to take along.

  • My favorite travel knitting project is actuallybjust my camera plus colored pencils to record ideas for new projects when I get home 🙂

  • My favorite travel knitting is a scarf or cowl— I try to be near the beginning of the project before it gets too bulky.

  • I always travel with a shawl to knit , always a fine yarn so I am unlikely to run out of knitting while moving around. Of course I am also looking for knitting stores along the way and usually find myself adding another project or two, always have space for this in my luggage.

  • Socks or hats are my favorite travel knitting easy and small

  • My favorite travel knitting is either a shawl or socks!

  • Travel knitting for me is a no purling project. Right now am working on 4 points baby blanket, a free Purl Soho pattern. Bonus: no sewing

  • I pick a simple repetitive project so that I can still enjoy the scenery.

  • I haven’t had the chance to knit while traveling yet as I just got into knitting less than two months ago. My favorite thing that I’ve taken with me in car rides so far has been a baby bonnet.

  • I’ve brought socks on almost every trip I’ve taken since I started knitting, but in the last couple of years I’ve come to appreciate having a simple shawl in a lightweight yarn along for the ride.

  • I spend more time planning my travel knit project than the trip itself. For big trips I like a little easy lace to keep my interest on the plane or train, then something with stockinette or garter for evenings in the pub or resting at a museum cafe. Shawls or a pattern like Tegna have been my favorites. I love wearing it later and remembering where I was when I made it!

  • I love that it looks so light, and airy; a perfect summer project and accessory!

  • I travel frequently, and in the last month my travel knitting has included: lace scarf, fair isle hat, baby blanket mitered squares, and a super chunky sweater.
I dont know that I have a favorite travel project, so much as I love projects that travel. ❤

  • I am new to knitting so don’t travel too much with knitting yet. Would have to be something easy like a scarf.
    Thanks for this beautiful giveaway!

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a hat! Nothing too complicated so that I din’t have to be constantly referring to charts or instructions. This way I can actually finish my project and then have justified a trip to the local yarn store of where I have traveled to in order to get more yarn to start another project. Bonus!

  • I always love socks for travel knitting.

  • Right now I have two travel projects: one is the never-ending cable band on my Dealla cardigan, and the other is a fairly simple Roberta’s Wrap.

  • I usually take a couple of bags of knitting on vacation, because I never know what I’ll be in the mood for! And I’m overly optimistic!

  • Socks have always been my travel go-to because they’re so small and easily portable. I’m expecting my first grandchild (yay!), so my preference is changing to baby sweaters.

  • Travelling is the perfect time for those small projects, baby sweaters, socks, hats, coals. I bring multiples, because omg!, what if I ran out! It would be like running out of books!!

  • For me it is socks. I always have a sock in my purse.

  • Depends on the travel – if car, could be anything…if plane, small like socks, dishcloths or light like lace shawl.

  • I’m knitting a shawlette, at this moment on east coast-west coast trip so lots of progress and should complete by end of trip.

  • Socks are my go to travel knitting! Easy and portable!

  • If i’m knitting, its definitely hats or squares for a larger project. If crocheting, I like taking small amigurumi projects with me!

  • My favorite travel knit is whatever I want to finish first. I hope that it will be something that can be knit in one’s lap without spilling into an aisle or floor. Least favorite would be something with a multitude of colors, as in intarsia. I usually have more than one project simmering, so I have a choice when a trip comes up. Now I’m waiting for self-driving cars so I can knit while “driving” alone.

  • My favorite travel knitting project would be small items, usually socks, or mittens. My all time favorite travel knitting project was a cardigan I knit for my daughter while my family traveled from Ontario to the Northwest Territories in Canada. We took 10 days to travel to our final destination. The yarn was purple with flecks of all sorts of wonderful colours through out. I remember trying to find the right shade of purple buttons along the way so that she would have it to wear at the end of our trip.

  • Socks are a super travel-ready project!

  • Love to travel with a project I can do by memory!

  • I don’t travel much, but if I did, I’d want to knit something easily portable like hats or socks.

  • My favorite thing to knit while traveling is socks. I am the world’s slowest sock knitter, so bringing along a pair in progress forces me to concentrate on them and make some progress. And I like remembering where each pair has been when I finally get to wear them (usually multiple places, since I’m so slow!).

  • Beautifil yarn! Beautiful shawl!

  • Cool give away. My favourite travel knitting is simple socks or a simple shawl/scarf. I like to do something relatively mindless but not too boring either so that I can be open to conversations and sights but able to make something useful and keep my hands busy.

  • My favorite travel knitting is a scarf. I belong to a group that knits for the community: our Veterans, the soup kitchen, a program for young families…we also put out knit items for the community on the eve of the Christmas tree lighting. Community knitting (rather than charity knitting because who wants to be labelled a charity?) warms my heart.

  • I take my “stupid knitting” with me everywhere. It’s a project that I can pick up a d knit without much thought and put away quickly. It might be a cowl, shawl or socks.

  • Generally I knit socks

  • Favorite travel knitting is a shawl or socks, both lightweight!

  • My fabvorite travel knit project is something small and mindless- the garter section of a lace shawl, a simple hat.

  • Probably NOT the fair isle with 14 colors I’m working on right now. It’s actually OK for the car, but not for planes or trains. I was just thinking that maybe it’s time to start a shawl.

  • I always have a family member or friend with a new baby on the way so my travel bag usually has a baby blanket or tiny sweater and hat to work on❤.

  • Hats are definitely my favorite travel knitting project, although shawls have so much appeal just because they keep my interest going the whole time! And serve as a blanket for if I get cold. 🙂

  • My favourite travel knitting project is to work on a shawl with repeating rows so it’s mindless to work on

  • Socks are the most convenient, but truly, I’ll lug anything along!

  • Honey Cowl or the tried & true ball band dishcloth!

  • A simple shawl or scarf pattern like Hitchhiker by Martina Behm with a gorgeous, colorful yarn works for me.

  • Could be anything – but I make sure it’s simple.

  • Simple shawls or wraps are my “go to” for travel, don’t want to miss the scenery but can’t not knit while sitting still.

  • Usually have a hat or socks for one of my five grandkids.

  • My favorite traveling project is socks!!!

  • I carried Granito through Italy. Anything with acres of stockinette, knit in the round.

  • My go to travel projects are shawls and scarves.

  • Lately it has been a flying disk, perfect for flying as it is a small project and if I finished a skein makes two so I can make a second one.

  • Cowls! Zip around in the round; stop when you have just enough yarn to bind off.

  • Love working on scarf or shawl with simple repeat so I can talk and knit at the same time

  • I’m not really a sock knitter, so I don’t generally choose that old stand-by for travel knitting. I choose anything small enough to fit in a smallish project bag. At the moment, it’s the Guernsey Wrap, Project #4 of #yearoftheretrostash — 9 projects in 2018 knit entirely from my massive, decades old, inherited stash. Learn more at amakerslife.tumblr.com.

  • I’m in Italy now and brought along socks and a lace scarf with an easy to memorize pattern to knit while here.

  • My favorite travel knitting is baby knitting. I like to keep track of where the project has been to give the baby a good start in the world.

  • I like socks as a travel project, or whatever project I’m so excited about at the moment!

  • I like to knit garter stitch shawls. They dont require as much concentration

  • Put me in the giveaway please.

My favorite travel knitting is a sleeve to whatever sweater I am currently knitting. Since I always have a sweater or 2 on the needles!

I am also fond of starting a top down sweater as I get on a plane. It keeps my mind occupied and not thinking of airplanes crashing or engines blowing up

  • Since I’m in the middle of a year of traveling in an RV – everything is a traveling project! So far I made hubby a cabled hat and am now trying socks on DPNs.

But normally I like a small project on circular needles – a hat, a cowl or a simple shawl.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  • I love to knit socks and baby items when traveling by plane. In the car, anything goes!

  • I like to knit donation hats. Doesn’t require closr attention so can enjoy the scenery.

  • I like traveling with a baby blanket on the needles because it is mindless and helps pass the time in the car. You can compare inches knit to miles traveled to get your inches to the mile ratio!

  • Travel knit: socks. Always socks. Or, sometimes, Zickzack scarf.

  • My favorite travel projects are hats. They are small and are fun to knit. Socks too but those can take paying attention.

  • My favorite projects to travel with are cowls

  • Socks and scarves. Definitely most favorite travel projects.

    • My favorite travel projects are socks and hats that I make for infants and small child who are having procedures in the hospital where I am a Radiology Nurse. Parents are very touched by the notion that one of the nurses would make a hat for their child.

  • I live in a rural area so even going to the grocery store is “traveling.” So I have two bags ready to go all the time — one has socks and the other dishcloths.

  • Socks – always my favorite travel knit. I take them everywhere! 🙂

  • I always have a relatively simple but time consuming shawl/scarf (the pattern for which I have memorized) that I take with me on trips. I don’t “let” myself work on it at home which makes it seem a treat to work on when I haul it out for a trip!

  • Always travel with a simple shawl on the needles.

  • A cowl is my travel knitting. As I live in a northern climate, I need ones for fall through to spring. I choose something that’s one yarn and doesn’t require an extra set of needles. A simple-ish pattern is also useful so if I need to put it down I’m not confused when I pick it up again. They’re also great to give as gifts as one size fits all.

  • I teavel with a small one skein cowl or triangular shawl project in my purse and usually a couple additional one or two skein projects in my day pack. One of my favorite travel patterns is Lacey Baktus. It’s easy to memorize but keeps your interest.

  • Travel with a shawl that has simple repeats–I’m easily distracted.

  • Hands down, a pair of mittens.

  • Like to travel with a shawl or scarf as knitting project- something not too complex so it can easily be set down.

  • My current travel favorites are shawls of the lightweight variety. Thanks for the chance to win!

  • I always have a small bag with socks in progress. That’s my traveling wip.

  • Socks are the best for travel

  • Socks, socks, socks for traveling.

  • Dishcloth and/or dishtowel

  • I have a toddler granddaughter. All travel project have been dresses in the round, monster pants, headbands, all baby stuff. What a Joy!

  • I take whatever project I want. I make it work.

  • My favorite travel project is socks. If you finish them then you have another nice pair to wear while you’re away from home.

  • I like to take socks, or easy shawl pattern.

  • A cowl or scarf

  • I like to travel with something small, often socks Last trip I took squares for my vivid blanket

  • A shawl, not too complicated, in delicious colors.

  • I love to knit scarves or socks when traveling.

  • In general, socks – they’re portable (usually one can fit in my purse), and I knit them on two circs so the risk of an accidental stabbing is a bit lower.

  • I usually prefer socks because they are so compact but I’ve been known to bring a shawl on trips, too. If I’m not driving, I’m knitting.

  • Favorite travel knit socks or shawl…usu take both just in case lol.

  • I am already ‘enrolled’ in both.

  • My favorite travel knitting projects are ones that are in little pieces. I can’t handle juggling a big piece of knitting as well as all those wonderful bits and pieces that I use to knit. (I’m a sucker for cute totes, etc.) Right now, my favorite project in little pieces is making rectangles for Warm Up America! This is a non-profit that collects knitted or crocheted rectangles that get sewn into afghans to be given to homeless people. A stash buster, an opportunity for creativity, with a good deed at the end of it – what’s not to like!

  • If traveling by car, I prefer something big like the Bright Stripes blanket I’m making for my high school daughter (it’s cold in school!). If on a plane, something small like socks or a shawl seems to fit better. I’ve got some socks going with Pairfect yarn, and the Sunwalker shawl too. Thanks for all the work y’all do to make MDK great.

  • Tiny airplane project favorite is a special wash cloth, bright and organic.

  • My favorite travel knit projects are hats and cowls!

  • Wowzers. Even in picture form that’s some luscious yarn.

I would like to say something practical like a hat or socks, but if I was to be honest, my travel project is whatever I happen to be working on whether it be mittens or sweater or even blanket.

  • I love socks as a travel knitting project!

  • I usually try to knit something simple and portable with fingering or lace-weight yarn–shawls and cowls, mostly. My favorite travel project was the Purl Soho Cashmere Cowl No. 2 I knit in France–never fails to remind me of the magic of seeing Provence.

  • My favourite travel project is having a shawl on the go……not a lace one but one with simple stitches.

  • Travel project? Cowl on circulars!

  • Travel knitting….just about anything! Always socks, (heals, toes and cuffs), shawl (current project), and at least one mindless project, sometimes wash clothes, but usually a basic hat.

  • My favorite travel project is something that I have cast on but not made substantial progress (guess what I’m usually doing after the packing!) that uses one (maybe two) skeins and has a fairly easy structure or remembered pattern. The Parallelogram Scarf was a great travel project.

  • I live in the suburbs of NY and commute into the city. The train ride is the perfect place to knit without distractions. While small projects are the easist to tote ( socks, gloves, scarves and shawls) I have made sweaters, jackets and other things during my commute. I am working on a pair of socks now and will move onto the Albers scarf next( from Field Guide #6) I love Shibui yarns.

  • Travel knits? Most of my travel is by car, so I bring ALL THE KNITS! Mwahahaa!

  • I loved traveling through Ireland along the Ring of Kerry, knitting the Waterfall Scarf. Between the sights and the workings of my hands, It felt like perfection.

  • always a scarf!

  • Those colors! That pattern! Such a perfect combination!

  • socks! socks! also, the hand towels from MDK Book 1 – those in linen. I’m on about my 20th pair.

  • For travel knitting, definitely socks!

  • Dish cloths

  • I must have a vanilla sock in hand if I am traveling.

  • I travel with whatever is on my needles – currently a shawl. Thanks for a chance to win!

  • My fav traveling knit project is an alpaca/wool Blue Skies Ultra geometric scarf pattern because the feel of the soft fiber is so relaxing. I have it in my favorite black leather traveling knit bag hanging from a door knob always ready to grab. I have made several and am always proud to gift them!

  • I am usually a sock girl, but sometimes a hat depending on the season.

  • I love a hat. Small and easy to transport

  • Socks! Socks and more socks!

  • My fav travel project is definitely socks…2 at a time!!!

  • Socks for sure, but only the plain vanilla variety. If I have to follow a pattern, the traveliness of them is gone.

  • Something mindless. Socks are always good. Small enough to fit in my bag.

  • My favorite travel knitting projects are scarves, cowels and shawls . Always on a circular needle my personal preference. My little case of notions like stitch holders & point protectors, tape measure etc…Always packed up for carry on.

  • My all time favorite grab n go project is cowls!

  • Travel knitting project
Anything on circular needles, keep those points close to me so as not to do any harm :), or get caught up in anything unfamiliar. A flowing project to accompany the journey and flow of travel, making the awareness of caution to the wind or any disruptions no problem. A fiber that holds me close to nature, travel can be rough around the edges, so the yarn can keep me cozy in thoughts and comfort. A color to bring the journey to life, something bright for the tropics, or
au’ natural for the trekking journey. Awe,,, knitting and travel are such good companions.

  • When traveling, socks. Who am I kidding? The answer is always Socks!

  • I love to travel with knitting! It’s the best use of time, isn’t it. I travel with projects that do not require me to look at the pattern instructions!

  • Baby items or socks or shawls

  • My choice is usually a simple hat because no matter what size it turns out it will still fit somebody. And you can experiment with small stitch patterns. As EZ said, “People will put anything on their heads”.

  • I like a project using non-splitty yarn, such as MDK’s Baby Genius Burp Cloth.

  • My favorite travel project is socks. Perhaps it’s obvious that they are a small project. I knit a sock on my bus tour of Turkey a few years ago–for my granddaughter. And once on a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands! Someone commented on how patiently I sat there and knitted.

  • I love to have something simple, such as a stockinette sock, or ones with a very simple pattern. If I will be traveling for longer, I like something a bit more intriguing such as a lace shawl.

  • I’m another traveling sock knitter! I love this shawl and would make it s traveling project for the summer.

  • The Airplane Scarf. I can knit it in the dark as it’s plain Knit in a tube, round and round I go knitting across the seas. I’m knitting it in a great cotton Blend next trip.

  • My favorite travel knit project of all time was the holey scarf (shawl pattern by Marianne Sigg) in Artfibers Tsuki. It was so lightweight, I didn’t mind carrying it everywhere, and it was just interesting enough but not too complicated!

  • My favourite travel knit is what ever I have on the go.

  • In winter months my favorite travel knitting project is a shawl. In warmer seasons a vanilla sock.

  • Historically socks have been the perfect travel knitting project for me… but I’m a little socked out at the moment! Truthfully, this year I’m thinking a light shawl is the way to go (something to wrap myself in on the way home?) The Albers Shawl is such a beauty!

  • My favorite travel knit is definitely socks! Or a smallish item like a cowl or sleeve with lots of stockinette!

  • I am new to knitting so I have not had experience with travel knitting but I would probably say a scarf or hat, something easy to take with me

  • Socks! Best travel project there is!

  • Something small, ie. Socks, dish cloth, baby hat…

  • Scarves and socks are my favorite items to knit while traveling. Love your newsletters!

  • I take 3-4 different projects on needles every time I travel, for various situations, there is always an appropriate project!

  • I love the Albers shawl! My travel knitting is usually whatever I’m working on; it’s not a good plan obviously, but I get so involved I don’t want to stop. But I have been lucky to be making small things for my very young granddaughter, so it’s been manageable. It’s always awkward, losing a needle on an airplane, having a ball of yarn roll away, and all the stitch markers that disappear on a car trip!

  • A nice simple shawl project is my favorite travel knitting. I have a rectangular shawl pattern that I knit for women with health issues that I can just about do in my sleep.

  • When I’m traveling, I like to take a small, uncomplicated (never lace!) piece of knitting to work on, usually something from the sock realm.

  • My favorite travel project is a shawl or scarf always on circular needles (so I don’t lose a needle!)

  • I am about to travel so am considering a cowl or top down baby sweater.

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a Shibui scarf or shawl!

  • Shawls. Always shawls.

  • I travel with Granny Squares and a crochet hook!!

  • one word: washcloths!

  • Shawls and scarves are my favourite travel projects. Small and portable.

  • Always afraid to run out of knitting when traveling, I usually pack a pair of socks and a couple of shawls requiring different levels of concentration.

  • Socks on magic loop! So easy to travel with, they come with me to work everyday. 🙂

  • Churchmouse Bias Before and After scarf is my go-to travel project. I am on my fourth right now!

  • I’m in the midst of Sock Madness and will be travelling soon with a sock on the go, plus yarn for the next five pairs.

  • I usually have a couple of travel projects with me! Simple socks in a gorgeous yarn because I can stuff them in my purse or pocket for a quick knit as needed, that doesn’t take any brain power to figure out where I left off, and beautiful yarn to keep me motivated. Sweater or larger project of some type that might have miles of plain knitting that is perfect for sitting in a car, watching a movie on a plane, etc.

  • For traveling, I like knitting projects that are compact AND uncomplicated… such as a plain scarf or socks – though the thinner needles do tend to poke out of whatever project bag I carry 🙂

  • Garter stitch baby blanket or wash clothes with pivot edge

  • As long as it’s knittable without too many references to charts/instructions, it’s good travel knitting in my book. Bonus points if it’s a gift with a deadline and I’m not feeling motivated. I’m certainly not going to travel without knitting, so if I make a deadline project the only project I have, then I’m guaranteed to make progress on it.

  • Something light for carrying around and easy to put down and pick up again. Socks or a sweater with a pattern that doesn’t require too much concentration.

  • Hats. Easy knitting and small enough to carry along.

  • My favorite traveling knitting project is a shawl. While on vacation, right now, I purchased summerfield kit from MD. Now It’s exciting to go home!

  • I always travel with a hat or scarf on the needles! Nothing on dpns:)

  • Hats and scarves are my go to travel knit projects!

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a sock.

  • A hat or wash cloth are always easy to grab and stuff in your purse

  • For me, “traveling” means knitting anywhere outside of the house. Shawls and patterns that are easily memorized are great, and especially ones where you can stop in the middle of a row and still know where you are next time. “Endless Rainbow” was great for that.

  • Socks–and “basic” socks at that…I know the pattern by heart (Yarn Harlot’s Basic Sock Recipe), they don’t take much room, and I can easily pack enough yarn for a second pair if I finish the first!

  • For my last summer vacation I started a shawl. Since it started out small it was perfect. When I wear it now I think of the great road trip we tools.

  • I love to take a pair of socks on every trip. They’re small and there is usually a lot of stockinette to do.

  • A shawl or a cowl is a perfect travel knit for me!

  • My travel projects are anything that I love to knit that uses, at most, one or two 100 grams skeins and doesn’t take a lot of thinking so usually simple shawls, cowls, fingerless mitts, hats, or socks.

  • Anything that doesn’t require a lot of direction following!

  • I love knitting your mitered crosses squares when I travel – after I memorize the pattern, that is….or maybe Brooklyn Tweed’s Noro stripe scarf.

  • Hats with an easy to memorize pattern.

  • Oakley or Swallowtail shawl!

  • My favorite travel knit is cowls!

  • I like to travel with small projects like baby blankets or lap blankets with interesting patterns to hold my attention.

  • Depending on my mode of travel and length of trip I take just about anything. Washcloths work great. Hats, mittens, a sweater…

  • Try favourite travel knitting project is socks.

  • Socks, always socks, I leave a pair in the car that I knit on.

    • As a newly minted grandmother, my favorite travel knitting projects have now shifted from simple scarves or shawls to baby hats, booties, sweaters, and “blankies,” – the simpler the pattern, the better. I delight in the baby patterns in Modern Daily Knitting books one and two, which are among the most well thumbed and well loved on my shelf (er, shelves!!) of knitting books.

  • I like making a hat on a trip. I can finish it have a momento

  • My favorite travel project is a scarf because of its portability.

  • Currently the Terrace Wrap has been my travel knit, although yesterday I threw a log cabin square for a lap blanket in my purse.

  • I like to work on socks, fingerless mitts or hats. I have 9 grandchildren so someone always needs something!

  • Pi Shawl 🙂

  • Socks, except on planes, because I once lost a DPN into the little crack between the seat and the wall. So I usually travel with socks and a shawl, preferable with not more than 2 colors.

  • My favorite travel knit is a large but simple project that will last me the whole trip, like a simple triangle shawl.

  • I usually take either a sock project or a cowl project if traveling – they are so easy to pack up – sometimes I take both…. 🙂

  • My favorite traveling knit project is a baby blanket- great for multitasking and something to give when it’s done.

  • My favorite travel knit is anything – which is why I always try to leave the driving to someone else!

  • Travel is a great time to knit a second sleeve. If the first one is done, you know if it works like you want. So you don’t need the whole sweater along for the ride. But maybe tuck in sleeve 1 to match up as you travel and knit sleeve 2.

  • Have shawl, will travel.

  • Has to be socks. So portable! I have them stashed in the glove boxes of both vehicles and in the two bags I regularly carry.

  • Lately, socks,at least two different pair. One self-striping and one more complex. And anything I’m currently working on, especially if I’m marooned in stockinette!

  • My favorite travel knitting is always socks – they are so portable and I usually pick a simple pattern so I can just knit away.

  • My favourite knitting to pack for short trips are blanket squares (I’m currently doing a KAL of them). They’re light and pack up small, and if I’m chatting too much and make an error they’re easy to tink!

  • Stockinette socks in self-striping yarn on a 9″ circular needle!

  • My Knit Night and Travel knitting favorites are 1) garter stitch, 2) stockinette in the round 3) swatching for gauge in either garter or stockinette, and 4) winding up non-wool yarn into balls. The last one may seem odd, but for me it cuts down on the tangling and collapsibility that non-stretchy yarns are prone to, even in cakes. (And non-wool skeins are generally just a yarn clot disaster waiting to happen.)

  • I just got my Transparency book – on way to LYS for some yarn for Cockleshell and this Albers shawl is gorgeous! My favorite travel project, right now, is the Jetstream shawl I am working on right now…

  • I like to travel with an uncomplicated shawl pattern, one with a slight challenge like texture or easy cables/lace but nothing too difficult that requires too much concentration!

Plane trips I like small items like socks, wristwarmers, or doll clothes. I think that covers all the bases.

  • My favorite travel project is making socks or a sweater/shawl. I started a poncho for my daughter several months ago and it’s almost finished!

  • Favourite travel knitting… Usually I like to knit a shawl on my travels, as they start so small and grow so fast. I am just back from a week away, involving 2 long plane rides and some evenings in a hotel room. This time I knit a hat, which I got bored with too early, so now I have to rip out the decreases at the top, make it an inch longer and then decrease again. I also started some Squad mitts! But so far I only have about an inch on one mitt…

  • I love a good wrap or shawl (Traveling Woman, natch, being a repeat knit) when traveling.

  • I’m not a big fan of flying, so my favorite travel knitting project is one that requires I pay attention to the pattern and only the pattern!

  • Usually a scarf or shawl or a hat, but lately Knitted Knockers – knitted breast prostheses. Small, quick and definitely a conversation starter!

  • Dutch stitch raw milk scarf.

  • I love a project (like the Hitchhiker scarf or the Jennifer Jones cowl) that has a little something interesting, but is mostly fairly mindless knitting that goes well with staring out the window (road trip) or people watching (airport)!

  • My favorite travel knitting would have to be a dishcloth.

  • Add me to the list of the sock-toters. If it’s a shorter trip, I like a hat or a cowl: something I can knit on autopilot in the round.

  • My favorite travel project is a scarf or hat.

  • I like bringing multiple projects since sometimes zoning out on stockinette is just the thing but sometimes really getting intense with cables can make a long flight seem less so. Multiple projects also helps get me to the next yarn shop in case I haven’t read the instructions thoroughly ahead of time (what, me?!) and don’t have all the bits and bobs I need. Floss does work remarkably well in place of waste yarn, especially if it’s waxed.

  • Socks are my go-to to-go!

  • My favorite travel knitting is an asymmetric triangle garter stitch shawl. Easy to throw in some patterning if I can pay attention, or just knit away forever if I can’t.

  • Love the pattern!

  • I’ll travel with pretty much anything other than full-sized blankets. That said, I love making hats – although then I usually have to bring both my circs and dpns.

  • I’ve just learned how to knit socks. However, since I tend to carry a big bag of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink supplies for my knitting, I don’t know if ANY of my projects are travel-friendly :/ Always afraid I’ll leave behind exactly what I need.

  • I like to travel with dish rags. Low stress if they get lost and sometimes it’s useful to have an extra towel around when you travel with two kids!

  • I travel usually with two sometimes three projects a hat or socks for in car or on plane but then a shawl or whatever my current WIP project is right now it is Comfort shawl so yummy.❤

  • A great new cowl project is always my favorite project to take on a trip. If there’s enough travel time, I get to wear it at my destination!

  • did you say travel knitting? My favorite thing to do but it must not be too fussy or difficult, gentle on my brain so that I can pit it down for a beautiful sunset, or mid afternoon margarita and pick it up again without wondering what is next!

  • I have been happily retired for a year now!!
When I did travel, which was daily, i love to knit in the round and a cowl was always on my needles for one of my friends to remember me by.

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a hat

  • A shawl like the Albers Shawl would make a perfect travel knitting project. Failing that, a pair of socks knitted two at a time would do as well.

  • My favorite travel project…. anything on circular needles with a simple repetitive pattern!

  • I prefer to crochet during travel, just in case I need to stop abruptly, for me, ‘mid-row pause’ is easier with crochet. Also, I make sure to have plenty of stitch markers :).

  • Everyday travel is socks or a simple shawl. Vacation travel is usually a brand-new project so I don’t run out before I get home!

  • I like to knit shawlettes when traveling…

  • For me it depends on what sort of travel I’m doing. I’ve been traveling for business semi-regularly, and have been enjoying the time spent on airplanes working on sweaters. For running around town, or shorter trips on public transit, I enjoy socks or cowls!

  • Always a shall whail traveling…

    • I usually have a scarf or shawl on my needles when I travel.

  • Dishcloths and other projects that are small or in beginning stage

  • My favorite travel knitting project- Hats in all sizes and shapes.

  • Depends on the kind of travel, i.e., bumpy and/or lots of interactions. For that kind of travel, cowls or crescent shawls in an easy to remember stitch pattern. If I’ve got long stretches where I can concentrate, hats on a circular. They’re small, easy to manage in a crowed airplane seat row and a pattern need concentration can make the time fly. DPNs and I don’t mix well on the go. I’m guaranteed to lose a needle or poke someone or lose half the stitches off a needle trying to quickly shove it in a project bag.

  • Socks

  • My favorite are the log cabin washcloths. Perfect size and technical difficulty for international flights and travel.

  • I love to have a pair of socks for travel. They’re small in volume, but contain enough knitting to keep me busy for quite a while! A basic pair is also simple enough that I can also read, to avoid those awkward conversations with the strangers in close proximity on a plane.

  • I am always overly ambitious with my travel knitting plans but you can’t beat a sock for portability (and everything else usually gets ignored in the end anyway, although there was one rainy holiday a few years ago when I did manage to get almost an entire jumper done – possibly because it was in pieces rather than my usual go to top down seamless construction and, probably crucially, I had done all the calculations before setting off).

  • My favorite travel project is one of the many Line Break shawls by Veera that I have going.

  • Favorite travel knit is something small. I have done socks, a market bag and a freewheeling shawl on my trips. Gotta have a project for all those times that you sit and wait while travelling.

  • I don’t travel very often, and I’m a terrible knitter in public. I just can’t concentrate, and I get self-conscious about it. So my favorite travel knitting project doesn’t exist. (just being honest!)

No chance of a needle rolling down the airplane aisle, enough stitches in a fine yarn that there is plenty of knitting for a fairly long trip, a pattern that is well memorized so that I don’t have to be pulling out a sheet of instructions. A hat would be a second choice (see circular needles noted above) BUT it’s usually too fast a project that I might be finished quickly, leaving me with empty hands and needles before the trip is done.

  • I’m a monogamous knitter, so my travel knitting is whatever I currently have on my needles. It usually works out okay.

  • My travel knitting? usually socks, but if it is a road trip, it can be a larger project such as a shawl or poncho.

  • I like to bring something easy when we go on a drive so I can knit and look out the window at the same time, usually a shawl.

  • I love to do a simple triangle shawl for travel. So forgiving!! But honestly, I travel with whatever is in my que At the time!! And a couple of spare projects. Just in case.

  • My favorite travel project is a scarf/shawl called Bateaux Mouches. Its a super easy project with no thinking, and the results are beautiful.

  • My favorite travel project- and I’m thinking airplanes, here – is typically a lace or fingering weight shawl, because there’s a lot of knitting from a little-space-taking yarn. BUT! For a trip I’m taking in early May, I’m planning to cast on a Shakerag top, and join the jamboree, I mean, the knitalong! It meets the requirement of not needing precise measurements for armhole shaping, and such. Woo hoo!

  • My travel knitting is usually some sort of garter stitch shawl – easy breezy!

  • Scarves or Shawls for me! One can never have enough scarves to wear in Canada! 🙂

  • It depends how I travel. Road trip: whatever I’m working on at the time, but usually 2 projects. One simple and one more complicated. Flying: something compact that can be worked on circular needles. Scarves are awesome!

  • Baby hats for a midwife practice.

  • I travel with whatever I’m currently working on…a shawl!

  • My favorite travel knitting is anything not lace.

  • I always have socks with me or sometimes sweater parts!

  • I go with circular needles for travel projects because 1. DPNs just LOOK dangerous, and even if I am allowed to take them on the plane, I’m sunk if one rolls under the seat; 2. DPNs in the front seat of the car make me worry about being impaled in an accident. I know that a lot of people knit socks on circular needles, but I have not made the switch. So the next best thing to a small sock is a sheer shawl that stays really small in your lap. Therefore: my favorite travel knitting project is a lacy shawl on a circular needle.

  • Two at a time socks (avoiding second sock syndrome!!)

  • Never without a “purse project” for local commuting or longer travels. This month it’s the Churchmouse Simple Tee in lightweight cotton.

  • Is this lame?? My favorite travel knitting is the Ballband dishcloth….easy, small, no worries if sand/sunscreen/snags happen!

  • Socks are my favorite travel project. Lots of knitting and very little space. However I do need to confess I usually take at least 3 projects!

  • My favorite traveling project is dishcloths!

  • Anything stockinette, always in the round as I like to watch the scenery as I can’t get out that much.

  • This summer it’s baby bonnets! But usually it’s a scarf.

  • I always have a scarf or cowl on my needles to bring with me when I travel.

  • My travel project currently is a tapered shawl.

  • Got to have something simple and serene while traveling. No lace/fingering weight because one never knows what type of lighting will be available! So … lovely worsted weight in a garter stitch for a shawl!

  • This summer it’s baby bonnets. But usually it’s a scarf or mittens.

  • I love knitting hats! Easy peasy – however I live in a warm climate so they are mostly give-aways!

  • My favorite thing to knit while traveling is a simple pair of socks or a shawl. I’ve also been known to knit baby items while traveling!

  • Love this pattern, these colours, the texture! I do not yet travel knit. I do take along a sock or shawl when visiting my sister, though.

  • Self striping socks!

  • Socks socks socks

  • Favorite travel project is a pair of my own design fingerless mittens.
But if it’s a long trip- give me a sweater!

  • For travel, anything that isn’t charted.

  • I like to travel with sweater projects…so satisfying, and when I wear them, they remind me of the places I traveled. Even if it was just back and forth to soccer practice!

  • My favorite travel knitting on the go is socks. But for a longer trip I love the Linus shawl, mindless but so fun to watch it grow.

  • I love socks on a trip, the just right size for travel!

  • My favorite traveling knitting: socks (on wooden needles) and shawls. The super Simple Shawl pattern usually fits the bill. And extra dpns. Sadly there are cars and planes that travel this country with a dpn down in their depths.

  • I always travel with a sock in progress!

  • Socks are my go to travel project. And I love the Albers shawl—she continues to be an inspiration.

  • I travel with knitted knockers or a hat project.

  • My favorite knitting project for traveling is always the one I am working on. Most excited about what I am creating at that moment.

  • My favorite travel knit is a cowl. Socks still aren’t second nature yet!

  • I bring socks with me to work on

  • I travel knit socks and cowls mostly.

  • An easy baby blanket is my favorite travel knit. Hours of mindless fun!!

  • My favorite travel knit is cowl

  • I usually take a shawl knit with me when I travel. Not lace, though.

  • My favorite travel project is always a scarf. They fit into carry ons well and I always have one as a wip for stocking stuffers for Christmas!

  • When I travel, I usually take socks, due to the portability.

  • If it is on a train for a long time, than i create a hat, shawl, or colw that repeats the same pattern.
But if it is… some inside – it depends on the location of the trip – if it’s cold, i’ll knit a blanket, but if it’s hot, i’ll crochet a simple one that spend 1 ball.

  • My favorite travel knitting varies with my mood, sometimes socks, sometimes a shawl, sometimes a lightweight sweater but always something light and easy to carry along.

  • My favorite travel Knit is Alexandra’s Airplane Scarf. I usually Knit this in Shibui Pebble. I have made quite a few of these scarves and love the weight and texture!

  • For various reasons, I don’t travel much. But I do have a favorite travel knitting story. I learned to knit on one of my infrequent ventures away from home! I was 57 years old, on a “yogation” with a small group from my local community college Saturday yoga class. It was 2013. We went to Point Reyes Station, CA. There was, of course, a LYS there. My new friend Barbara guided me to some Brown Sheep yarn, which she deemed suitable for a beginner. I bought size 8 needles. And she taught me that night. I am now a total addict. I get together once a month with the friends I made on that trip and we knit.

  • I like to work on shawls. Lots of knitting, not too much bulk. There are so many that are beautiful, lots of travel time.

  • When I travel I love to knit something with a pattern I can memorize to facilitate easy breezy use as I run to and from the car and spend time with my family!❤️

  • My favorite travel knitting is a wide Kidsilk Haze scarf/shawl. Usually I make them striped or color blocked. Takes up very little room in a bag & very useful for travel when you finish it.

  • I love baby sized items as a travel knit. I’ve also enjoyed shawls, socks, & headbands.

  • This looks gorgeous. Love the work.

  • Hats are my go-to travel knitting. Not too big, and in the round!

  • I love knitting socks while traveling. They’re readily portable and, in large part, pretty mindless knitting so I can watch the scenery and knit away without mistakes!

  • My favorite travel knit is hats – small, fast, and easy to pack up and go.

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a scarf.

  • Socks!

  • I’m a recent convert to sock knitting and love their size and portability for travel knitting.

  • My favorite travel knitting is something not quite mindless. I want to be able to pick it up and put it down as needed, because sometimes things come up quickly while traveling. However, I also want to have something with a little bit of something to keep my interest, whether it be an easily memorized pattern, color changes, or texture changes.

  • Socks for sure! small compact and can be picked up and put down easily.

  • My fave travel knitting depends….Socks and mittens are always good. For a long trip I’ll pack a holiday gift scarf. You know one of those projects that are fun for about half the length. And needs a push to finish. Having nothing else to work on provides the push!

  • Socks, of corse, or chemo caps

  • My favorite travel project is whatever is on my needles at the time! Even a “thinking” project usually has segments that require less concentration so I will plan to take those segments when I travel. For local carry along projects I usually have a hat in the works so will grab that.

  • You know, I haven’t mastered the art of choosing a travel knitting project, but I usually make sure it is on circular needles, preferably wood or bamboo, and that it is something that does not require me to refer often to a pattern or chart. Usually it is whatever gift I am hurrying to finish (since the recipient is at the other end of my flight!)

  • I work on a Zuzu shawl when I travel.

  • Socks!!!!

  • Anything with an uncomplicated stitch pattern.

  • My favorite travel knitting project is whatever I’m currently knitting that can fit into my travel knitting bag

  • Hats are a favorite travel knit for me…..although since most of my traveling is in our motorhome, I can knit most anything. In fact, i’m almost finished knitting the Carbeth sweater using the beautiful Shibui yarn!

  • Socks and cowls for me. Something that is easy and fairly compact for packing.

  • I will either take a pair of socks or a shawl to knit on the airplane or in the car or like today to sit in the back of a meeting and have something to do when the meeting gets boring.

  • When traveling I always take a simple project (circulars a must, along with a simple pattern I don’t have to constantly refer back to). Currently knitting Tegna and traveled with it AFTER the lace section.

  • Honey cowl!

  • Sock knitting is my go-to travel knitting

  • Socks!

  • Sock, socks, aleays socks! Preferably 2 at a time on a magic loop because a dp lost on a plane is, well,…lost forever somewhere in the bulkhead area.

  • It would have to be a sockhead hat. Or if a car trip, one of my everlasting Pi shawls.

  • Socks! So portable, especially since I use Magic Loop.

  • I usually bring wayyyyy too much. Traveling is my main time to sit happily without interruption and really gaze on new patterns and my stash, back and forth, until a plan appears. Well not my whole stash but say those beautiful fingering yarns.

  • My favourite travel-knitting project is a shawl in a lace-weight or fingering yarn and a simple, easily memorized pattern. Miles of garter or stockinette stitch are just fine!

  • I like shawls for travel knitting as they are usually straightforward without a lot of special techniques or stitches.

  • Whatever the current project on the needles is becomes my go-everywhere project! I’ve knit a wool throw in the tropics because I was having so much fun with it, and needed to have it done in time for the baby. Dedication to monogamous knitting indeed!

  • Sweaters with lots of stockinette. Currently Bibbe.

  • Socks! Always socks!

  • Would love to win this ki

movies I missed while at home.

  • I usually work on portable projects – fingerless mitts, socks, blocks for blankets.

  • A sequence knitting scarf using the spiral knitting method. Memorize the sequence and knit on!

  • My favorite travel knitting project would be a hat. Small project, doesn’t take much room, and with circular needles I don’t have to worry about dropped stitches. Perfect!

  • For me it’s fingerless mitts. Makes for a nice hostess gift also. Awesome giveaway, thanks.

  • Garments in the round and small gauge big wraps! The BEST travel knitting. Thanks so much MDK – and Shibui!

  • I usually travel with socks, so portable.

  • I travel with socks on my needles.I have taught several people how to knit socks wheen they saw me knitting and it piqued their interest. And then I have a pair of socks to wear once they are finished as I journey!

  • When I go to my cabin (lake shore in central British Columbia. . .very relaxing) I take 2 or 3 projects that are in need of finishing along with anything else that beckons at the moment. . .usually a shawl.

  • I love socks as a travel knit! I have a project bag that I take with me, so whatever can fit in there are my travel knits. Socks, beanies, mittens..usually a couple projects going at a time. Thanks for the opportunity to enter in a giveaway!

  • I always think of straying from socks, but you can’t beat them — the most knitting in the smallest space. I do two at a time, and if they’re sufficiently vanilla, an afterthought heel eliminates the need to pay any attention at all!

  • Simple shawls

  • Something small and steady with a repetitive pattern and in a beautiful fiber. Most often it is a shawl or cowl.

  • My favorite travel knits are socks and shawls

  • I sing the song of the travelling socks. Also the simple triangle shawl in Noro silk garden sock for extended family car camping trips.

  • Fractal Danger by Martina Behm is a great project for traveling. Very fun knit!

  • Usually scarves or dishcloths

  • Socks are my go to travel knitting project.

  • Thanks for all you do! Look forward to Saturdays to enjoy the inspiration.

  • Always have a pair of fingerless mitts or a cotton dishrag on the needles…ready for travel by bus or train or plane or car…and for the meetings I must attend.

  • My travel knitting: going to a LYS in the city I’m visiting to talk to the knitters there about their city, buying beautiful wools and a pattern for a small project, starting the project while there and then finishing it on the plane home.

  • Socks, Love how there is so much knitting in a tiny package. Most of it is mindless with a little attention for the heel.

  • Hats, cowls, little stuff. I like to finish a project while traveling.

  • Hats, usually worsted weight

  • Something semi-mindless so I can pick up and knit easily. Maybe some dishcloths so I get a sense of accomplishment too!

  • a shawl…with long rows and an easy to memorize repeat/pattern.

  • For travel knitting, I’ll have socks on my needles, or a light and lovely shawl. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I love to knit smaller projects when traveling…hats, shawls, scarves. If I’m on a plane (always in coach!), my knitting won’t get in anyone’s way. I pack the larger projects to work on when I get to my destination (usually a friend who also knits!).

  • Socks of course, or a dishcloth if I don’t happen to have any socks on the needles.

  • Favourite Travel Knit – anything that fits into a project bag

  • This is seriously cool.

I normally travel with socks. They are portable and don’t require a lot of materials.

  • My favorite travel knitting project was the mini-shawl I made on my trip to France in March.

  • Definitely socks are my go to travel knitting. They take long enough that I won’t finish the project too soon, yet they only take one large ball or two small balls of yarn in a single, compact project bag so it’s not cumbersome to carry. It makes a great conversation starter for fellow travelers too.

  • Lately, log cabin blocks for my log cabin blanket

  • My favourite travel knitting project is something that doesn’t require too much concentration, like a garter stitch shawl, or easy mittens/hat, so I can keep up conversation, or look at the sites, and not have to worry about keeping my place in the pattern. • Socks are my travel preference as well.

  • I like your Snippets and regular newsletter very much. Brings a lot of encouragement. Thank you.

  • If I am traveling by plane, I find it too hard to knit on the plane because of the crowded seats, however I always bring a project to work on in the airport. In that case, I like to bring something small, like a toy or baby clothes.

  • My go to travel knitting is a cowl.

  • I almost always travel with socks as my knitting project, but a shawl project would be a close second.

  • Hudson Bay blanket

  • Favorite travel knitting? What am I currently working on? Usually that is the favorite. Extra packed projects may include a cowl or socks or mittens- you name it something small. Or maybe enough materials to start a new larger project (depending on how long the trip will be).

  • When traveling to visit family and friends I like to knit wash cloths and leave them for my host!

  • What will you think of next (for your series)? I’ve been wanting to say that I am thrilled at the turn you took when you decided to start listing the top popular patterns for the year – it helps so much to decide what’s worth knitting and/or gifting for the year – AND it saves us all from not being able to keep up with the worthwhile lovable time sucks and research it takes on Amazon and elsewhere to find out all the new knit and crochet books that are published for the year. All the vendors we are spending less time with I’m sure are rewarded with greater sales because we can come to your site and check it all out. Kudos, and thanks!!!

  • Socks or a simple hat or scarf.

  • Travel project, singular? Erm…I recently took four WIPs with me on a three day trip, so I guess my favorite travel project would be ‘having options’. An engaging car/plane project, a mindless coffeeshop/exploring project, a creative project/design in progress in case inspiration strikes…

  • I made one of Monika Sirna’s Tutus while traveling in Peru – yards and yards of stockinette. Unfortunately, all of my interchangeable circular needles fell out in the airline pocket and I didn’t notice, so I thought I’d have to put the final needle increase on hold. When we crossed into Argentina, I found a shop that only had reallllly long straight needles. I managed to MacGyver a solution and finish it up before arriving home.

  • I love to knit hats when I travel. Circular travel projects forever!

  • Socks are my go-to travel project.

  • Shawl

  • I always have a shawl project with me!

  • I like to bring a simple shawl or scarf and socks.

  • Favorite travel project is a sweater or dress (one from Minnie Knits, done in the round, perfect!) — it’s easy to pick up and knit anywhere, and time flies!

  • My favorite travel knit is always a shawl – I generally have a few on the needles so I can pick and choose!

  • Socks or a baby sweater, either one is small and a often a bit mindless but so pleasing!

  • I’m a dishcloth girl!

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a ribbed baby blanket, knit with sock yarn held doubled.

  • I knit “stay-on booties” when I’m on the road, even it it’s to the supermarket, where I often knit while waiting for the checkout. The needles are fine (US 0 – 2) and the wool is fine, so I don’t have to carry much to get several hours of knitting. Sometimes I happen to have a finished pair, and I happen to meet a baby who needs them on the spot.

  • I always have a hat project ready to go. It’s done with bulky yarn and is knit sideways with a provisional cast on and short rows. It is then fulled. I know it by heart and each hat turns out unique.

  • My favorite travel knitting project is a cowl knit in the round. One set of needles (and maybe a cable needle) stays in your lap, and you never have to worry about an end dipping onto the floor, or into something unpleasant.

  • My favorite travel knitting project? Anything on circular needles so that a needle doesn’t go rolling along under the seats of an airplane. Also something with an easy to learn (and remember) pattern since having to keep a pattern on those tiny pull-out trays along with your drink and knitting and maybe if you’re lucky some peanuts or pretzels is just too much to ask!

  • I have been working slowly on an enlarged Lifted Shawl for quite a while whenever I am traveling anywhere.

  • Favorite traveling Knit is socks or a scarf

  • Dishcloths! Never even have to look.

  • Nothing like a wrap with lots of meditative knitting — garter or stocking, I’m not fussy 🙂

  • My favourite travel knitting is Ella Gordon’s Hap Cowl.

  • Shawls!

  • I like to make simple cowls with DK or worsted weight yarn for plane travel and socks or shawls for car trips. Thanks for making Saturday’s even better: I really enjoy Snippets!

  • Given how late Snippets came out, and that the comments are still open, I’m going to try this anyhow.

I’m a big believer in either socks or lace shawls for travel knitting. They’ll fit into my purse, but last longer than baby stuff.

  • My favorite travel knitting is the log cabin as I can take small skeins and watch my kids at the park or while waiting for a flight and not take a large amount of space. I’m currently making pillow covers from all my left over pink yarn from making Pussy hats that I sent all over the US and UK

    • Not very original but, socks work for me when traveling.

  • I like to travel with a scarf that has an easy to memorize pattern.

  • Knitting…I never leave home without it!

  • I love to have scarves with repeatable patterns ready for any car trip.

  • Cowls-def cowls

  • Right now I’m knitting a blanket designed by Kristen Nicholas with 25 colors. The worst travel project!

My favorite is a scarf that is quickly memorized and not so complicated that it needs constant attention. Oh, and fun colors helps because I love talking to strangers and no one minds approaching someone knitting a happy scarf!

  • A stockinette sweater vest with lots of straight knitting – and purling.

  • Love doing a garter-stitch shawl. Its so soothing…

  • I’ve been making some baby blankets (10stitch) easy in the car. Also my drumstick knitting. I knit with some slightly drummed with drumsticks…just scarves so far.

  • A shawl or cowl

  • Socks

  • Whatever my current project is – lately, baby booties!

  • I love Shibui! I like to make baby hats while I travel. I can use up stash and get almost instant gratification with a finished item.

  • A hat or scarf usually. A few times I’ve knitted eyeglass cases, which normally I find tedious (all linen stitch – not my favorite to knit, but like the look and they make a nice gift!)

  • Good travel knitting: socks, shawl or hat!

  • hats or sometimes a shawl, in the round

  • I like to work on socks while I’m traveling.

  • Anything without a crazy chart, but socks and straightforward shawls are favorite travel pieces.

  • I take almost thing that I am working on as long as it fits into my bag. Right now I am working on a dress for my 2 year old granddaughter. My next project is going to be an Afghan for my God son & his future bride.

  • My favorite travel knitting is Hitchhiker!

  • something mindless…a favorite infinity scarf pattern!
