I ave two that travel well, the Albers Cowl by Ann Weaver and the Fussy Cuts squares by MDK. Except I now have all the squares I need for both. Finishing is not my strength. So, I need another travel project.
Shawl pattern. I rarely travel long distance so i pack just one shawl project.
I like bringing a hat or cowl, something small that can be finished and worn during the trip.

I firmed up my knitting skills on a car trip to the Gaspe peninsula a few years ago and came away with a lot of them. The scarf I was working on for my husband at the same time was my out of the car travel project – miles of broken rib, in alpaca too slippery for a beginner to handle while the car was moving. Actually, even when it wasn’t, but you can’t really tell . . .
Hi! For travel, I love to begin (so it starts out small) a new shawl – and something simple so I can look around while I knit. My favorite thing about vacation is knitting, since I always seem to get a lot of it done and it is a little discrete period when I can try to complete the project before I come home. I also love road trips – I get a lot of knitting done on those! xo!
I prefer plain knitting on circulars for travel. A shawl or socks are great.

Favorite travel knits is a small item on a circular needle. You are never in the lurch, having lost one needle.
My favorite travel knitting is Shibui’s scarf/shawl/wrap Crete … rows and rows of simple stockinette on the bias to keep it interesting…. and loads of compliments when it’s done and I wear … big payoff!!

I recently travelled with nridie, a “cocoon” design by Bristol Ivy. Usually I take a basic acaef,.this was perfect because it has just a bit of something to do and… linen.

I’ve usually got a plain vanilla sock with self-striping yarn in my travel gear. Easy to pack, easy and relaxing to knit.

My favorite travel projects lately have been baby sweaters or hats and cowls. They fit in a cosmetic bag and aren’t too fussy. I had been carrying a sock project in the car, but inevitable one of my needles would make a break for it somewhere along the way and end up AWOL.
My project(s) of choice depend on my mode of transportation. Multiple small or one large if flying. Sky is the limit if driving.
Small toys – my last trip it was chubby birds!

Vanilla socks with a colorful yarn is often my traveling project but I do have to be careful not to lose one of the double pointed needles. Maybe that is why I am always buying more DPs! A simple shawl is another great traveling project.

I love to take a 1 (or 2) row pattern & some yummy yarn to make a scarf. I always have one in my to go bag, and also take it to medical appointments for those long waiting room delays.

My “carry it around in case you have to wait” travel project is a sock. My “we’re going on vacation” project is a light-weight shawl. Either way it has to be easy to memorize so I’m not juggling charts while knitting,
Depending on the time of year, the length of the trip, what I already have on the needles…but I do like working on plain striping socks or a hat and podcasting my way through the trip.
I carry around a light scarf that fits in my purse. Right now it’s the Oh, Helen by Rebecca Carmichael Stromgren. It’s the easiest yet most impressive looking pattern. In 2016 and early 2017 I made about a dozen of those pink hats while traveling.
I will travel with whatever project I have on the needles at the time. If it is something large I will take other things out of my bag to make room for my knitting.
My favorite project to travel with is a shawl. I just love the feeling of the growing shawl piling up on my lap, especially if I’m on a bus or plane or train—it already gives me warmth and comfort, even though it isn’t finished yet!

Oddly enough, my favorite travel project is a shawl. I like knowing I have plenty of project to work on which means I’m less likely to pack too much yarn. Well, I still pack too much yarn, but to a lesser degree.

I love traveling with hats on my needles. Both preemie ones for the hospital nurseries, and larger ones. Easy to start, design on the go, and if I run out of yarn ( heaven forbid,) I can pick up a new skein at the LYS.

What a giveaway! I like to travel with at least one fingering weifht and one DK/worsted weight project, preferably one that is simple/mindless or one that I can finish on the trip (such as a hat in winter) and one that might require a little more attention, so I have choices. And I can choose to ignore them and buy souvenir yarn if I leave room in my suitcase!
At the moment, the Colorwash Scarf from the MDK Wild Colors Field Guide is going wherever I go. Other times, I carry a pair of vanilla socks on two circulars. Or a Prayer Shawl. Basically, anything I can do without a pattern.
Here’s my entry for the shawl kit. My favorite travel knit project now is the nine patch blanket. It’s so easy to remember, all garter stitch and multiples of 10.

My favorite travel project was the Vortex shawl I knit out of Kristin Omdahl’s Be So Fine bamboo. It took me 4 vacations to finish it and I added a tiny bead after each trip so I could remember what I did where. My new travel project is the Deep End using beach colors.

My favorite travel project is a classic Elizabeth Zimmermann Pi shawl, which really does make its own bag on circular needles. By the time I get home, it’s time to find a nice lace for the end.

My favorite travel project would have to be the Casapinka Another Brick in the Shawl that I recently completed on my round trip flight from Washington DC to Australia. How could you not love something that occupied your time for that length of air time! Anxious to get my hands on FG No. 6!

I will be knitting a sock while my husband drives us to the cabin today. Finishing the leg of the sock doesn’t require much attention so I can watch the scenery and talk to my husband about the chores we will need to accomplish while we open the cabin after the long winter.

My favorite travel knitting is usually socks, although I once knit Anne Hanson’s Wheaton while on a 20-day backpack in the Sierras.
Small and uncomplicated – I do hats, coasters, or a scarf. I always have 1 portable project going because I have a lot of wait time at soccer games, taekwan do classes, etc. If I’m travelling by plane, where I can concentrate better, I’ll take a more complicated pattern.
Whatever I happen to be working on at the time. I have traveled in 80F degree weather making a thick wool sweater (maybe not the best choice) but I can’t seem to put away the gorgeous thing I have been desiring even though I’m squeezing myself into an airplane seat!
Definitely a shawl. Easy knitting on round needles and an simple enough pattern. As the shawl “grows” – makes a warm cover up for cool airplanes and traveling by car.

I actually find travel knitting pattern choice to be a huge problem. In short, it can’t be too plain/boring but it really can’t be too complicated either — learned that when I tried to knit a very fancy lace shawl on vacation — the kind where QUIT INTERRUPTING ME I LOST MY PLACE AGAIN. I always choose something in fingering-weight yarn so it takes longer … but it does have to be finishable or I lose hope. Most recently I’ve done shawlettes and baby sweaters.

I always pack several projects just in case I run out of knitting. But I always work on something I don’t have to pay too much attention to. Right now I’m working on a garter cowl.
When I travel I like long, simple knit rows – stockinette sweaters or garter shawls.
I usually have both a sock project and a sweater project. And I always start a sleeve on a long flight, keeping ALL the yarn handy. Because we all know that we can complete an entire sweater on one plane flight!
Socks are super great for traveling, but since learning the log cabin technique, I always have a square on hand!
Anything with an easy pattern so I can enjoy scenery and conversations along the way!

I carry a shawl in a quart-size baggie everywhere – something I don’t need a chart for, but that little ball of lace yarn lasts forever I’ve never lost a circular needle (sorry, socks)!

I am now planning on a travel knit as I pack for Alaska!! It will be a crescent shawl that is fairly mindless with eyelets added every few rows and striped for added color.

Right now my travel project is Susan Ashcroft’s “Belgian Waffle”. The stitch pattern is easily remembered and it’s easy to read your knitting to see where you are.

I love a compact shawlette as a to-go project, or a pair of simple socks. Something that doesn’t involve too much concentration, so it’s suitable for social situations.

Deciding on my travel knitting project is usually the first thing I do when getting ready for a trip. Next week I’ll be in the car for a few hours with my husband, who fortunately likes to do most of the driving. I was thinking about which small, easy WIP I would bring but writing this gave me the idea that I could finish the log cabin blanket I have been working on for too many years! I will have lots of car time but I could still bring socks or a scarf for once I get there and have time hanging out with my relatives. If I only have the blanket easily available in the car, I could get it done finally. It’s one big piece of log cabin so when the knitting is done it’s done, as I work in the ends as I go along. I already feel relieved just thinking about it! Now I better order my new field guide. (I recently finished a Windows Pane shawl by Casapinka and have been thinking about other ways to use the technique so the Albers shawl intrigues me.)

Intellectually, I’d choose socks, but I don’t like knitting socks (just like wearing them and spending hours looking at sock pattern books). So, for me it’s a shawl kind-of project. It can even be a little complicated. Odd, I know.

I love cowls! They are super portable, and fun, pops of color. Plus every time I wear it, I am reminded of where I was while knitting. It works at least as well as a photo album for taking me back to the m9ment.

I worked on a fisherman knit sweater (complete with bobbles!) in a beautiful brown wool while traveling back and forth to college on a Greyhound bus. So many years ago. Wish I still had that sweater.

Travel projects vary depending on mode of travel, of course! Daily commute must be fairly small and interruptable. If there is a road trip involved, simple patterns but size is no object because conversations and scenery must be attended to. Train journeys depend on length of trip as to complexity of the project.
We’re headed to Florida in a week & I’ll be packing my regular travel knitting pack. First, something to knit in the car. That should be something very basic, preferably a stockinette something. Then, when we get there, I will have brought at least 5 or 6 WIPs. It is very important to bring LOTS of projects in case you get stuck on one, you still have something to fall back on (not that has ever happened to me ).
My favorite travel knitting project is a cowl. I’ve done several in both warm and cool weather yarns. I usually choose a fairly simple pattern, but one with enough interest so I don’t get too bored on a 4+ hour flight and one which doesn’t need a lot of stitch markers, as I’m bound to lose at least one along the way.
An easily memorized pattern or a project without a pattern! I cannot imagine having to refer to a chart or detailed instructions all the time. Once I took my Les Miserables scarf on a trip to India. It is just miles of stockinette with dropped stitches, then lightly felted. It was perfect to work on now and again, and on the long plane rides.

One of the most exciting parts about planning a trip is choosing my travel project! I like to choose a yarn or pattern that I’ve been saving and incorporate my knitting excitement into my travel experience. Socks can be fun, but I also love shawls, hats, or baby garments.

Like many others, my favorite travel project is socks! So portable. Especially plain vanilla socks, so I hardly even have to think about what I’m doing! Plenty of attention span left over for the airplane movies and free drinks 😉

Usually it’s socks but I just got yarn for a 10 stitch blanket. Just 10 stitches on the needles throughout and no seaming.
For travel, the item cannot be too large, of course, but the type of item is less important than that the pattern is fairly mindless.

I haven’t had the chance to knit while traveling yet as I just got into knitting less than two months ago. My favorite thing that I’ve taken with me in car rides so far has been a baby bonnet.
I’ve brought socks on almost every trip I’ve taken since I started knitting, but in the last couple of years I’ve come to appreciate having a simple shawl in a lightweight yarn along for the ride.
I spend more time planning my travel knit project than the trip itself. For big trips I like a little easy lace to keep my interest on the plane or train, then something with stockinette or garter for evenings in the pub or resting at a museum cafe. Shawls or a pattern like Tegna have been my favorites. I love wearing it later and remembering where I was when I made it!

My all time favorite travel knitting project was a cardigan I knit for my daughter while my family traveled from Ontario to the Northwest Territories in Canada. We took 10 days to travel to our final destination. The yarn was purple with flecks of all sorts of wonderful colours through out. I remember trying to find the right shade of purple buttons along the way so that she would have it to wear at the end of our trip.

I belong to a group that knits for the community: our Veterans, the soup kitchen, a program for young families…we also put out knit items for the community on the eve of the Christmas tree lighting. Community knitting (rather than charity knitting because who wants to be labelled a charity?) warms my heart.

I always have a relatively simple but time consuming shawl/scarf (the pattern for which I have memorized) that I take with me on trips. I don’t “let” myself work on it at home which makes it seem a treat to work on when I haul it out for a trip!

A cowl is my travel knitting. As I live in a northern climate, I need ones for fall through to spring. I choose something that’s one yarn and doesn’t require an extra set of needles. A simple-ish pattern is also useful so if I need to put it down I’m not confused when I pick it up again. They’re also great to give as gifts as one size fits all.
I teavel with a small one skein cowl or triangular shawl project in my purse and usually a couple additional one or two skein projects in my day pack. One of my favorite travel patterns is Lacey Baktus. It’s easy to memorize but keeps your interest.

My favorite travel knitting projects are ones that are in little pieces. I can’t handle juggling a big piece of knitting as well as all those wonderful bits and pieces that I use to knit. (I’m a sucker for cute totes, etc.) Right now, my favorite project in little pieces is making rectangles for Warm Up America! This is a non-profit that collects knitted or crocheted rectangles that get sewn into afghans to be given to homeless people. A stash buster, an opportunity for creativity, with a good deed at the end of it – what’s not to like!
If traveling by car, I prefer something big like the Bright Stripes blanket I’m making for my high school daughter (it’s cold in school!). If on a plane, something small like socks or a shawl seems to fit better. I’ve got some socks going with Pairfect yarn, and the Sunwalker shawl too. My favorite travel project is something that I have cast on but not made substantial progress (guess what I’m usually doing after the packing!) that uses one (maybe two) skeins and has a fairly easy structure or remembered pattern. The Parallelogram Scarf was a great travel project.
I live in the suburbs of NY and commute into the city. The train ride is the perfect place to knit without distractions. While small projects are the easist to tote ( socks, gloves, scarves and shawls) I have made sweaters, jackets and other things during my commute. I am working on a pair of socks now and will move onto the Albers scarf next( from Field Guide #6) I love Shibui yarns.

I loved traveling through Ireland along the Ring of Kerry, knitting the Waterfall Scarf. Between the sights and the workings of my hands, It felt like perfection.

Anything on circular needles, keep those points close to me so as not to do any harm :), or get caught up in anything unfamiliar. A flowing project to accompany the journey and flow of travel, making the awareness of caution to the wind or any disruptions no problem. A fiber that holds me close to nature, travel can be rough around the edges, so the yarn can keep me cozy in thoughts and comfort. A color to bring the journey to life, something bright for the tropics, or
au’ natural for the trekking journey. Awe,,, knitting and travel are such good companions.

My choice is usually a simple hat because no matter what size it turns out it will still fit somebody. And you can experiment with small stitch patterns. As EZ said, “People will put anything on their heads”.
I like a project using non-splitty yarn, such as MDK’s Baby Genius Burp Cloth.
My favorite travel project is socks. Perhaps it’s obvious that they are a small project. I knit a sock on my bus tour of Turkey a few years ago–for my granddaughter. And once on a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands! Someone commented on how patiently I sat there and knitted.
I love to have something simple, such as a stockinette sock, or ones with a very simple pattern. If I will be traveling for longer, I like something a bit more intriguing such as a lace shawl.

I take 3-4 different projects on needles every time I travel, for various situations, there is always an appropriate project!
I love the Albers shawl! My travel knitting is usually whatever I’m working on; it’s not a good plan obviously, but I get so involved I don’t want to stop. But I have been lucky to be making small things for my very young granddaughter, so it’s been manageable. It’s always awkward, losing a needle on an airplane, having a ball of yarn roll away, and all the stitch markers that disappear on a car trip!
A nice simple shawl project is my favorite travel knitting. I have a rectangular shawl pattern that I knit for women with health issues that I can just about do in my sleep.

I usually have a couple of travel projects with me! Simple socks in a gorgeous yarn because I can stuff them in my purse or pocket for a quick knit as needed, that doesn’t take any brain power to figure out where I left off, and beautiful yarn to keep me motivated. Sweater or larger project of some type that might have miles of plain knitting that is perfect for sitting in a car, watching a movie on a plane, etc.
For traveling, I like knitting projects that are compact AND uncomplicated… such as a plain scarf or socks – though the thinner needles do tend to poke out of whatever project bag I carry 🙂

As long as it’s knittable without too many references to charts/instructions, it’s good travel knitting in my book. Bonus points if it’s a gift with a deadline and I’m not feeling motivated. I’m certainly not going to travel without knitting, so if I make a deadline project the only project I have, then I’m guaranteed to make progress on it.

For me, “traveling” means knitting anywhere outside of the house. Shawls and patterns that are easily memorized are great, and especially ones where you can stop in the middle of a row and still know where you are next time. “Endless Rainbow” was great for that.
Socks–and “basic” socks at that…I know the pattern by heart (Yarn Harlot’s Basic Sock Recipe), they don’t take much room, and I can easily pack enough yarn for a second pair if I finish the first!
For my last summer vacation I started a shawl. Since it started out small it was perfect. When I wear it now I think of the great road trip we tools.

Travel is a great time to knit a second sleeve. If the first one is done, you know if it works like you want. So you don’t need the whole sweater along for the ride. But maybe tuck in sleeve 1 to match up as you travel and knit sleeve 2.

My Knit Night and Travel knitting favorites are 1) garter stitch, 2) stockinette in the round 3) swatching for gauge in either garter or stockinette, and 4) winding up non-wool yarn into balls. The last one may seem odd, but for me it cuts down on the tangling and collapsibility that non-stretchy yarns are prone to, even in cakes. (And non-wool skeins are generally just a yarn clot disaster waiting to happen.)

Ah….travel knitting. On a long cold weather road trip I like to work on a throw or even a blanket (keeps my knees warm). On a long warm weather road trip I like to work on a shawl. I keep a small bag handy with a sock project to use on short (like even 15 minute) road trips. I also knit in church school…socks. Plane trips I like small items like socks, wristwarmers, or doll clothes. I think that covers all the bases.

I like bringing multiple projects since sometimes zoning out on stockinette is just the thing but sometimes really getting intense with cables can make a long flight seem less so. Multiple projects also helps get me to the next yarn shop in case I haven’t read the instructions thoroughly ahead of time (what, me?!) and don’t have all the bits and bobs I need. Floss does work remarkably well in place of waste yarn, especially if it’s waxed.

My favourite travel knitting is a shawl with very fine yarn on a circular needle. But I always have socks, just in case I run out of knitting.

I’ve just learned how to knit socks. However, since I tend to carry a big bag of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink supplies for my knitting, I don’t know if ANY of my projects are travel-friendly :/ Always afraid I’ll leave behind exactly what I need.
I like to travel with dish rags. Low stress if they get lost and sometimes it’s useful to have an extra towel around when you travel with two kids!
I travel usually with two sometimes three projects a hat or socks for in car or on plane but then a shawl or whatever my current WIP project is right now it is Comfort shawl so yummy.❤

I prefer to crochet during travel, just in case I need to stop abruptly, for me, ‘mid-row pause’ is easier with crochet. Also, I make sure to have plenty of stitch markers :).

Roll brim baby hats are my most favorite travel knitting. Great for TV kitting too, though at the moment my TV knitting is the log cabin cardigan that popped up in the log-cabin-along a few weeks ago.
I usually take a hat or scarf along with me but sonce we have a RV I do take larger projects on long trips.
I love having a shawl, because the rows are long if you are in a conversation and don’t want to focus on your knitting.
I’ll travel with anything small enough that I don’t have to wrestle with it. Circular needles are preferable so I don’t lose one. Most recently, it was a hat that inspired some envy in a fellow knitter who forgot to bring her own project to work on.

Sadly, I don’t have a cool project to take with me. My standby for travel or all day conferences is the good old cotton dish cloth. Size 7 needles, some Dishie, peaches & cream, or ancient Red Heart tucked in my purse, and I am adding to my Christmas stash.

Scarf for travel knitting.
A not-too-complicated lace shawl on a circular needle. You get a lot of knitting mileage from the thin yarn and with a circular needle you minimize the risk of dropping a needle and having it roll under your travel companion’s seat.
I always have a sweater on needles that is up to the rows and rows of stockinette to finish the body (top down) . No need to worry about mistakes in pattern: can talk, knit and watch the scenery!

Hats! I like to take projects that fit in a small space and usually a cute teeny bag with just the right number of widgets and accessories when I travel.

I normally take a shawl or scarf along. Sometimes a baby sweater if one (a baby!) is on the way. It has to be special yarn, knit on needles large enough that my eyes do not struggle, and fit in my voluminous purse.

Depends on the kind of travel, i.e., bumpy and/or lots of interactions. For that kind of travel, cowls or crescent shawls in an easy to remember stitch pattern. If I’ve got long stretches where I can concentrate, hats on a circular. They’re small, easy to manage in a crowed airplane seat row and a pattern need concentration can make the time fly. DPNs and I don’t mix well on the go. I’m guaranteed to lose a needle or poke someone or lose half the stitches off a needle trying to quickly shove it in a project bag.

My favorite are the log cabin washcloths. Perfect size and technical difficulty for international flights and travel.
I love to have a pair of socks for travel. They’re small in volume, but contain enough knitting to keep me busy for quite a while! A basic pair is also simple enough that I can also read, to avoid those awkward conversations with the strangers in close proximity on a plane.
Socks. I go nowhere without a sock in my bag. They’re perfect for the bus, the T, commuter rail, Amtrak, a plane.

I am always overly ambitious with my travel knitting plans but you can’t beat a sock for portability (and everything else usually gets ignored in the end anyway, although there was one rainy holiday a few years ago when I did manage to get almost an entire jumper done – possibly because it was in pieces rather than my usual go to top down seamless construction and, probably crucially, I had done all the calculations before setting off).

Currently I’m traveling with some scrap yarns to create log cabin squares— I’m creating a log cabin wool and mohair coverlet for my single bed. this project is knit entirely of wools and mohair that I had stashed or that I’ve thrifted at various thrift stores. I love yarn-tasting while travelling! it is nice to knit and not be hurried to finish something, simply knitting away and getting to know a new yarn! It helps me come to terms with my stash-guilt and if I buy some yarn in destination, it’s immediately put on my needles. Instant joy.

I’ve been liking the Reyna triangle scarf for traveling with lately.
I always have a pair of socks started before I go on a trip. I knit these travel along buddies on 9” circulars so they fit neatly in my purse or carry on bag. My last trip I made a pair (well not quite done) of Hermoine’s Everyday Socks. I really enjoyed the textured pattern. The Albers Shawl would fit very nicely in my carry on or my knitting bag in the front seat of the car. Beautiful scarf!

When I went to Italy I had begun working on a child’s sweater with a starfish on it. We arrived in Venice and I ran out of the white yarn which put me on a search of a LYS. We found one and the very sweet owner actually kept the store open so that we could find her, I’m wishing that I had bought more of her lovely yarn that day!

Usually fingerless gloves, hats, and baby sweaters. More recently I knit a Ramona Cardigan and am currently working on Ramona Light. We travel a LOT Car, air, boat. Kids & grands are in NYC, Tampa & Austin (we’re in Tacoma WA) Plus, my husband gets bored and grumpy. when we’re at home too long.

It’s a 12 hour drive to the grandkids!

Planning for travel knitting is so important. For me, it’s always socks. But I need to choose a yarn that I want to travel with; I need to decide if I’m going to do two at a time or use my HiyaHiyas or double pointed; and I need to make sure I have all the miscellaneous items to keep it flowing.

My favorite travel Knitting is always Socks on circular needles. No chance of a needle rolling down the airplane aisle, enough stitches in a fine yarn that there is plenty of knitting for a fairly long trip, a pattern that is well memorized so that I don’t have to be pulling out a sheet of instructions. A hat would be a second choice (see circular needles noted above) BUT it’s usually too fast a project that I might be finished quickly, leaving me with empty hands and needles before the trip is done.
A good mindless knit for travel (without too many changes but enough to keep it interesting)

I’m a monogamous knitter, so my travel knitting is whatever I currently have on my needles. It usually works out okay.

My favorite travel project- and I’m thinking airplanes, here – is typically a lace or fingering weight shawl, because there’s a lot of knitting from a little-space-taking yarn. BUT! For a trip I’m taking in early May, I’m planning to cast on a Shakerag top, and join the jamboree, I mean, the knitalong! It meets the requirement of not needing precise measurements for armhole shaping, and such. Woo hoo!

I go with circular needles for travel projects because 1. DPNs just LOOK dangerous, and even if I am allowed to take them on the plane, I’m sunk if one rolls under the seat; 2. DPNs in the front seat of the car make me worry about being impaled in an accident. I know that a lot of people knit socks on circular needles, but I have not made the switch. So the next best thing to a small sock is a sheer shawl that stays really small in your lap. Therefore: my favorite travel knitting project is a lacy shawl on a circular needle.

When I travel, I usually take socks, due to the portability.
If it is on a train for a long time, than i create a hat, shawl, or colw that repeats the same pattern.
But if it is… some inside – it depends on the location of the trip – if it’s cold, i’ll knit a blanket, but if it’s hot, i’ll crochet a simple one that spend 1 ball.

For various reasons, I don’t travel much. But I do have a favorite travel knitting story. I learned to knit on one of my infrequent ventures away from home! I was 57 years old, on a “yogation” with a small group from my local community college Saturday yoga class. It was 2013. We went to Point Reyes Station, CA. There was, of course, a LYS there. My new friend Barbara guided me to some Brown Sheep yarn, which she deemed suitable for a beginner. I bought size 8 needles. And she taught me that night. I am now a total addict. I get together once a month with the friends I made on that trip and we knit.
I like to work on shawls. Lots of knitting, not too much bulk. There are so many that are beautiful, lots of travel time.
When I travel I love to knit something with a pattern I can memorize to facilitate easy breezy use as I run to and from the car and spend time with my family!❤️

However, I also want to have something with a little bit of something to keep my interest, whether it be an easily memorized pattern, color changes, or texture changes.

My fave travel knitting depends….Socks and mittens are always good. For a long trip I’ll pack a holiday gift scarf. You know one of those projects that are fun for about half the length. And needs a push to finish. Having nothing else to work on provides the push!

I always think of straying from socks, but you can’t beat them — the most knitting in the smallest space. I do two at a time, and if they’re sufficiently vanilla, an afterthought heel eliminates the need to pay any attention at all!

If I am traveling by plane, I find it too hard to knit on the plane because of the crowded seats, however I always bring a project to work on in the airport. In that case, I like to bring something small, like a toy or baby clothes.

Travel project, singular? Erm…I recently took four WIPs with me on a three day trip, so I guess my favorite travel project would be ‘having options’. An engaging car/plane project, a mindless coffeeshop/exploring project, a creative project/design in progress in case inspiration strikes…
I made one of Monika Sirna’s Tutus while traveling in Peru – yards and yards of stockinette. Unfortunately, all of my interchangeable circular needles fell out in the airline pocket and I didn’t notice, so I thought I’d have to put the final needle increase on hold. When we crossed into Argentina, I found a shop that only had reallllly long straight needles. I managed to MacGyver a solution and finish it up before arriving home.

My favorite travel knitting project is a ribbed baby blanket, knit with sock yarn held doubled.
I knit “stay-on booties” when I’m on the road, even it it’s to the supermarket, where I often knit while waiting for the checkout. The needles are fine (US 0 – 2) and the wool is fine, so I don’t have to carry much to get several hours of knitting. Sometimes I happen to have a finished pair, and I happen to meet a baby who needs them on the spot.
I always have a hat project ready to go. It’s done with bulky yarn and is knit sideways with a provisional cast on and short rows. It is then fulled. I know it by heart and each hat turns out unique.
My favorite travel knitting project is a cowl knit in the round. One set of needles (and maybe a cable needle) stays in your lap, and you never have to worry about an end dipping onto the floor, or into something unpleasant.
My favorite travel knitting project? Anything on circular needles so that a needle doesn’t go rolling along under the seats of an airplane. Also something with an easy to learn (and remember) pattern since having to keep a pattern on those tiny pull-out trays along with your drink and knitting and maybe if you’re lucky some peanuts or pretzels is just too much to ask!

I like to make simple cowls with DK or worsted weight yarn for plane travel and socks or shawls for car trips. Thanks for making Saturday’s even better: I really enjoy Snippets!
Given how late Snippets came out, and that the comments are still open, I’m going to try this anyhow.
I’m a big believer in either socks or lace shawls for travel knitting. They’ll fit into my purse, but last longer than baby stuff.
My favorite travel knitting is the log cabin as I can take small skeins and watch my kids at the park or while waiting for a flight and not take a large amount of space. I’m currently making pillow covers from all my left over pink yarn from making Pussy hats that I sent all over the US and UK
Not very original but, socks work for me when traveling.
I like to travel with a scarf that has an easy to memorize pattern.

Right now I’m knitting a blanket designed by Kristen Nicholas with 25 colors. The worst travel project!
My favorite is a scarf that is quickly memorized and not so complicated that it needs constant attention. Oh, and fun colors helps because I love talking to strangers and no one minds approaching someone knitting a happy scarf!

I’ve been making some baby blankets (10stitch) easy in the car. Also my drumstick knitting. I knit with some slightly drummed with drumsticks…just scarves so far.

I love Shibui! I like to make baby hats while I travel. I can use up stash and get almost instant gratification with a finished item.
A hat or scarf usually. A few times I’ve knitted eyeglass cases, which normally I find tedious (all linen stitch – not my favorite to knit, but like the look and they make a nice gift!)

I take almost thing that I am working on as long as it fits into my bag. Right now I am working on a dress for my 2 year old granddaughter. My next project is going to be an Afghan for my God son & his future bride.
