A New Class! Learn Intarsia with Florence Spurling
It’s the technique we’re most often asked to teach.
Intarsia.
Friends, we are here to help. Yes, it’s time for intarsia.
With all the joy in the world, today we announce a virtual class with Florence Spurling, wherein we all learn about intarsia while working on her extraordinary shawl design.
When and Where
Date: Friday October 11, 2024
Time: Noon-2:00 p.m. Eastern time
Location: Zoom. This is a virtual event.
Register right here.
The Class
Learn intarsia with the Elvan Shawl pattern! Intarsia is one of the most creative knitting techniques, almost like painting with yarn. In this class, you’ll learn all the skills needed to walk away feeling confident with this colorwork method.
Yarn organization and finishing will be also be covered, including the best ways to add in new yarns for a clean and professional look, as well as tips on handling and organizing multiple yarns at a time. You may choose to work on the shawl itself or on a practice swatch.
Our Teacher
Florence Spurling is that amazing combination of designer and teacher.
Originally from Oxfordshire, England, she trained in London where she received a Masters in Textile Design from The Royal College of Art. Florence is passionate about creating unique, tactile, and desirable fabrics that display her love of detail and craftsmanship.
Florence creates designs for the contemporary hand knitter that mix color, texture and pattern in distinctive ways. When not designing under her own name, Florence works on fashion knitwear development for clients such as Anthropologie, Chloe, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors. Florence is the author of Designing Knitted Textiles: Machine Knitting for Fashion.
The Yarn Kit
Two options for the class.
Option 1: Virtual class plus a kit of yarn for the Elvan Shawl as shown in these photographs.
The yarn is really special, and one we’ve never carried before: Kokon, from South Africa, a 100% Merino dyed in beautiful colors.
We have a limited number of Elvan Shawl yarn kits for this class, so if it looks like your kind of thing, please jump on this.
Option 2: Virtual class only. If you have stash aplenty and want to cook up your own yarn palette, we’re offering this as a virtual class alone. The Elvan Shawl pattern is included in this class-only option.
Once You’ve Registered
We’ll immediately send you a confirmation email including:
A PDF with the Zoom link to the Oct. 11 class.
A coupon code to use on Ravelry to download your Elvan Shawl pattern.
All the yarn specifications you’ll need if you’re using your own yarn.
If you’ve ordered the yarn kit, it will ship the week of September 30. Orders outside the U.S. may not receive kits in time for the live class.

Sometimes we love something so much that we go kind of bonkers. A while ago, we got sight of Florence Spurling’s Elvan Shawl, and we started scheming and dreaming. To see this all come together is so exciting for us—Florence knows so much, and she’s eager to share it all with us. Please join us and register here! This will be big fun.
Although I will never reach this stage of expertise (for a variety of reasons) I found this design wildly exciting. So original. My brief foray into intarsia – an inlaid pink heart on a black background – was such a delightful experience that I have kept it in mind for future Small, Simple projects. So really looking forward to hearing more about this.
Oh my goodness! So many great classes!!! I’m so glad the videos exist to view again. This last on with Cecelia Campochiaro was way too much to digest in one setting. Thanks MDK for the opportunity to learn and grow as a knitter and as a person.
I know Jan, Cecelia crammed SO MUCH into her workshop, I was breathless.
This is truly a work of art! Love this project and opportunity ❤️
Wow, that is quite a shawl! I’m going to research her designs. Is she possibly going to be a Field Guide author in the future?
Hi,
I live in a place I have really bad internet so I don’t get zoom. Is there any other way to watch this video if paid for?
Thank you
Hi Sheryl! We make the video recording of the class available immediately after the live class ends. I don’t know whether your internet is enough to watch a video recording via your internet browser, but I hope so!
What is the cost? Kind regards Kath
Hi, Kath. Just click through to the listing (the orange words “register here” at the bottom of the post) to see the pricing options, one with the kit, one without.
Any idea if there is a pattern for the sheer intarsia sweater she’s wearing?
Google tells me it’s Jardin . . . https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jardin-pullover
Thanks! Obviously searching her own patterns SHOULD have been my first step. I’m a sucker for anything ethereal – that sweater inspires me to master intarsia.
I love that sweater! It looks like a fun knit.
