Here we are, on this holiday. We hope you’re finding peace and calm.
We have something of a tradition at MDK of creating a playlist of songs to mark the season. Everybody on the MDK team picks favorites, and we compile them into a playlist for you.
It is wildly eclectic, given the folks here, and it’s not a holiday playlist—just a bunch of great songs.

I made dozens of socks until I retired and moved to a warmer climate. Now it’s baby sweaters for the grand kids. Usually my own riff on a basic pattern.
My favorite sock yarn project is my Musselburgh hat. Warm, reversible and just plain fun to wear!
Little mini mittens with the odds and ends of my sock yarn.
The “Multnomah” wrap always looks great in sock yarn. It really shows off all the colours!

Adore the final product but getting there was tough and not rushing toward another brioche.
I wish it were socks. I’ve only ever tried on pair that currently a wip that is hibernating. New sock yarn will probably end up as a sweater ( a whole body hug!)

I have a new fascination with using my beautiful single skeins of sock yarn for the Musselburgh hat.

I’ve made many fingerless mitts/hand warmers with sock yarn. It’s a special challenge to use self-striping and also getting them to match!
Socks mostly but I do love a nice cozy shawlette. My own 2:2 rib sock pattern fits my leg and ankle and my toe shaping for a right and left foot means no bunching in the toes!

I knit a bunch of socks in mid 2000s but never actually wore them. I guess I just don’t like them? Or maybe I just need to pair with my barely worn clogs. I have a healthy sock yarn stash that I’ve been knitting cowls, shawls, hats, and mittens instead. Love reading all the comments for new project ideas!

With gradient and self patterning color yarn, I love Hermione’s sock pattern because it works nicely with any colorful sock yarn, it has the standard flap and gusset heel and the tidy looking garter edge on the flap

I’m a sock newbie & procrastinated due to Fear Of Heels. Currently learning a Vanilla Socks pattern.
Ecken + Kanten by Martina Behm. Use one yarn or modify with leftovers. I’ve used various weights and textures – sometimes in the same wrap, but really like doing each of the “blocks” with a variety of sock yarns. I do enjoy most projects out of fingering weight yarn!

When my kids were little I made tiny dolls out of sock yarn, they were so fun to make but it was so long ago now I’ve no idea what the pattern was, I think it was a Waldorf school pattern. Thanks for the playlist!

I LOVE sock knitting. I am on a quest for the perfect vanilla sock pattern. I don’t need the challenge of a complicated pattern. I’m looking for zen. Let the yarn do the work. My fav is Susan B. Anderson’s How I Make My Socks from her blog. Although Tracie Millar has convinced me to try making DK weight socks. I only use DPNs because I love how it freaks out the muggles.

Yes! Me too! Freaks ’em right out. After trying different heels/toes, I found my favorites and let the gorgeous yarn do the work. Sock are for relaxing, I’m with you there! I made my 2nd Boxy by Joji out of sock leftovers hoping to use them all up. But no, they multiplied when I wasn’t looking. Still, I love my Sweater of Many Colors.

I have to say I love making socks with sock yarn. If I don’t use a pattern, I use Ann Budd’s basic sock pattern as my go-to pattern but use 2 circulars instead of dpns. It’s a great pattern when you have self-striping yarn.

Me, too! A good slouchy hat in fingering weight is great TV knitting.
Shop Window Socks by Allison Lutes (can find on Ravelry). They are cute and the perfect beginner stranded color work pattern. Not too complicated and just an embellishment of stranded knitting. I used a precious stash skein that I had been holding for a long time, that is no longer available.
Socks from the book Toe-Up 2-at-a-Time Socks by Melissa Morgan-Oakes are my favorites. I use the magic loop method.

Goldfinch (by Andrea Mowry) is my favorite. Pattern is written for sport weight, so I sized down just a bit. I used three tonals that I loved, and I still reach for that shawl often.

I’ve made lots of things out of sick yarn but not that many socks! Probably my favorite is the Aimee cardigan by Joji Locatelli as that used 5 different skeins I had.
I love making shawls and cowls with sock yarn. I just finished Pure Joy by Joji using two skeins of Barnyard Knits yarn and it was a perfect match of yarn to pattern.
I love all the Willow Cowls I have made with sock yarn.

My Rhinebeck 2021 splurge was a six-color gradient from Fiber Optic Yarns, which I knit into the Large Honeycombs Shawl by Stephen West. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever made. This year’s splurge was one of their infinity gradients, and I’m partway through the Small Honeycombs Shawl that was included in the pattern. This gradient is a full rainbow with 14 colors and I love the shawl it’s making even more than last year’s. My new favorite!
Romi Hill’s High Sierra Shawl. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/high-sierra-shawl The construction was entertaining and it wasn’t hard and people always love it when I wear it.
I usually double strand finer yarns in projects with a plain wool to “tweed” and let me use larger needles for socks at a slightly bigger gauge and take it easy on eyes and hands. Pattern i like are simple and came from an older thin booklet from a Philosopher’s wool collaboration or one in a thinner sock booklet from maybe interweave w about twenty patterns in it. They are all fun.
The second booklet is actually called “Socks:a Spinoff special publication” and has a teal cover w pictures inset. Lots of sock types and gauges are in its patterns.
Nokonoko, a sweater by Miyuki Watanabe, using Malabrigo Sock. A really wonderful pattern. It came out great and it is the perfect weight for fall here in New England. Mostly I make shawls with sock yarn. So many shawls.
Socks, toe up, gusset, 2×2 rib, perfect fit for me and for DH. But this past year or so I have been making Ysolda’s Musselburgh hat.
Hitchhiker! Also Joji’s Lone Skein shawl – so fun watching the colors in a variegated skein unfold, and playing a little yarn chicken (I lost, but adapted well). For those looking for “vanilla socks,” I love the Vanilla Latte socks pattern.
Socks! This Christmas, I am giving my family a grab-bag full of hand knit socks because I make so many.
I had some yellow, speckled yarn that I was dubious about making socks with. They are my favorite pair!

I struggle to actually finish knitting projects, but I am very proud to have finished Sharon Air by Casapinka using the umpteen mini skeins i had in stash. I will be wearing it to our Christmas dinner party!

Socks of course. Helen Stewart and Rachel Coopey have a lot of beautiful designs. Susan B Anderson has a nice basic sock. Lucy Neatby has great hints and tips for fit and techniques. These are only a few of the rabbit holes of sock knitting. I wouldn’t hesitate to use sock yarn for hats or gloves or mittens.
Why socks of course! I use a basic pattern called simply socks and I modify the leg for whatever suits the yarn.
I’ve made lots of socks and shawls and toys with sock yarn but probably the one that I love and wear the most is the Philomena shawl by erineen designs. It was an mkal a few years ago during the Maine yarn cruise and I used yarn I acquired during that summer. And the leftovers are being worked into a gnome right now! I love that sock yarn leftovers have so many uses.

It’s very difficult to narrow it down to just one favorite as I’m very indecisive…I love smaller projects that I can take with me so it may be the Tiny Owl Knits Bee Keeper’s quilt, because I can use almost every bit of yarn! And I am able to acquire donations from other knitters to add to the scrappy appeal of the quilt. However, I do love me some socks (such a portable conversation starter) and have been on a crusade to turn folks on to hand knit for lots of years, (this obsession is responsible for the ever growing quilt).
Simple Ziggurat Top by Asa Tricosa. A long sleeve sweater with positive ease. I live in it during our brief Florida winter!
I made a sock bunny for a wee one! I don’t remember the pattern, but it was perfect with a variegated yarn. It looked almost tie-dyed! And the long ears were adorable.
I made a blanket – perfect weight for living in Florida. Took awhile, but it’s so soft and comfy – perfect for when there’s a slight chill in the air.

Yanagi by Maiko Hikosaka, a beautiful toe-up sock. I just finished my 4th pair. It has a really pretty 14 stitch, 6 row lace pattern that is easy to memorize.
I love making shawls with intricate stitch patterns–lace, cables, and/or texture. Happy holidays, everyone!!

My favorite thing I’ve made with sock yarn this past year is a small triangular shawl with sawtooth edge by a German publisher. So far I have made and given away seven.
Plain vanilla socks, use the pattern from Susan Anderson. It is a simple yet comfy sock.
The simple Elemental Wrap from Purl Soho. It’s easy and practical.
I don’t make socks but have knit the most beautiful shawls and wraps using sock yarn. One of my favorite wraps is Diffraction, on Ravelry. It uses one skein of a solid color and one of a multi-colored sock yarn. Looks amazing together.
I made mittens for my 5 month old granddaughter with sick yarn.
Fingerless gloves- no particular pattern, mostly just a tube with or without a thumb gusset. Easy peasy!
I love the Money socks by Cookie A. I’ve made them 1.5 times.
The Holden shawlette. I think I’ve made around ten of them!
My fave is Light and Up by Caroline Wiens. I’ve made three and considered starting another the other day. I wear them a lot. The tassels keep the whole thing in place so I don’t have to constantly readjust it.
By far my favorite things I’ve made with sock yarn are my many pairs of socks. I wear them daily and they give me great joy. Merry Christmas!!!

As an exercise in helical stripes I used odds and ends of sock yarn to knit Carol Feller’s Helly hat. It’s one of my favorites.

My favorite thing made with sock yarn? Has to be…socks! I’ve done shawls and cowls and mitts, but warm comfortable socks top the list. Soft ones, striped ones, cable or lace!

Socks! My favorite travel project. I have a pair that I worked on for a full year while traveling. I put about 31,000 miles on those socks, and took them up Mt Washington in NH, Pike’s Peak in CO, and Mt San Jacinto in CA. Another pair I did one sock on a cruise around the British Isles and the second on a work trip to the Netherlands and Germany. I’ve got pictures of my socks in progress on planes, trains, ferries, cruise ships, duck boats and monorails!

mitts for a friend who lost a finger – no pattern just knit to certain dimensions
So many socks. And more socks. I’ve had a rough few years culminating in my mom’s death the first night of Arne and Carlos when I was there in Nashville. About 10 days ago I picked out a sock pattern with multiple charts and complicated stitches for the first time in years. I used to love to knit all the crazy socks and slowly, slowly, the space used caring for others is filling up with care for me and an ability to execute tricky maneuvers with tiny needles. I’m considering knitting through a couple of my sock books and refilling my sock drawer with all the cables and lace in miniature.
Besides socks? I love socks!❤️❤️. The silliest was Grumpy the Lump of Coal. I made as many as I could from 1 skein. When people were scroogy at work I put one on their desk. Pattern on Ravelry.

Happy holidays to you all at MDK and thank you for all you do for us, your adoring public! I love the Clincher scarf pattern for sock yarn. It’s a cute little tapered scarf with an icord edging that forms loops through which you thread the pointy end of the scarf.
Leave Gnome Stone Unturned. It turned out really cute. But oh those fiddly little pieces. By the time I finish I swear I’ll never make another. But I now have 3 and one in the works. So I guess I should just get used to those little parts. Happy holidays everybody!

I’ve done sweaters and socks, hats and mittens, color work and crochet, but my favorite might still be Roxie the Hippo!
A saggy, baggy Boxy sweater which I love to wear. This was my only deviation from the socks that keep my feet happy in winter.
Sipalu Bag by Knit Picks. I take the liberty of felting the bag for a tighter finished product. If felting it needs to be made out of 100% wool.

This beautiful Celtic cushion with such an unusual construction: a combination of knitting in the round with steeking for the 2 middle sections and then picking up around each edge for the border. I make baby hats, mittens, and socks out of sock yarn and donate them to a local charity. I am also working on a multi-year project: a blanket made out of sock yarn leftovers . . . 5 grams makes one square. I think I’m about halfway – it’s for a queen sized bed. I’d be delighted to trade leftovers with anyone else in the continental US.
Socks!!! I love making socks and always have a pair on the needles. I’ve learned that I can knit while traveling without getting car/air sick, so trips have become that much more exciting, and socks are my favorite travel knit!!!

I made the Winterfell cardigan by Katrin Schneider with sock yarn bought from an indie dyer. It fit really well so I made a second one and will probably make another one in 2023 by slightly altering the slip stitch pattern!

I had a favorite pair of black gloves, just an inexpensive mass produced pair. I had to replace the thumb and index finger of the right hand glove when they wore out, using some leftover self striping yarn. Now I lost the left glove, so I guess I will have to knit another one. Not sure if I have enough of that yarn left!

I’ve knit fingerless gloves from a stretchy sock yarn that I love. I planning to try some socks again now that I got Season 7 of Knitstars instructions video.
A have a favorite pattern within a favorite category: slouch hats. A slouch hat knit with sock yarn doesn’t flatten my hair as much as other hats, while still keeping me warm. I have made, and loved, many sock yarn slouches over the years, but my favorite is Ambah O’Brien’s mirri hat. (It’s the eyelets!) I have made 3 for myself so far, gotten lots of complements, so plan to make more as gifts.
Toe-up knee socks in Regia Perfect Rainbow (sort of a cobbled together pattern) for my son. He wore them to Pride with high-top Chucks. Yes, wool knee socks in June. I think he must like them—that takes commitment.

I have never used sock yarn! I tend to go for the larger diameters and do not even own needles small enough to knit socks. I live at a higher elevation and so I need shawls that are more than lovely, they keep me warm. Worsted weight is the way to go! Merry Christmas, everyone!
Most favorite recent project made with sock yarn was Aiobhe Ni’s “Phoenix Hat.” Tunisian crochet with a lovely subtle wave pattern. It looks harder than it is and works up fast. Aiobhe’s patterns use a charting system that is a bit unusual. I’ve made many of her designs, but it had been awhile and the hardest part about the hat was reminding myself of how to read the chart. Sock yarn is probably my favorite to knit and stash. The most fun thing I ever made was the tiny chickens from mochimochi world. My bff and I knit them over Zoom in 2020 and they brought us so much joy in a dark time. I knit a bunch and gave them to friends as talismans of levity. I still keep one in my purse.

Of course socks are the best, but I also make shawls/scarves. The most rewarding, creative, and relaxing is to make a basic triangle with the increases going down each side of the center spine. I use different stitches for the body as it grows. This offers the opportunity to mix detailed stitch patterns with basic depending on my mood! Love sock yarn and tiny needles…

Lovely giveaway! My favourite sock yarn project is the Flabellum scarf by Wollschnegge, a paid pattern on Ravelry. It was my first shawl project and a wonderful way to pair a tonal yarn and a wildly-coloured hand-dyed yarn. It doesn’t look like much on the Raverlry pattern page, but I always get compliments when I wear it.
I guess I have to say Vanilla Socks on DPS by Kate Litton (Crazy Sock Lady). Only I made them using the Magic Loop method.
I also began an entrelac scarf using Noro Silk Garden sock yarn, but never finished it.

I haven’t quite fallen for knitting socks yet – I’m hoping third time’s the charm and two circulars works for me. I love freaking out the muggles with DPNs but have a laddering issue and just don’t like Magic Loop.
In the meantime sock yarn is great for hats, cowls, infinity scarves and shawls. I’ve loved most all the patterns I’ve used but perhaps the most stunning combination of yarn & pattern was Petals and Picots (https://www.ravelry.com/projects/graycm/petals–picots).

I know many things can be made with sock yarn besides socks but I am always working on a new pair and so I never seem to get on to that next thing. I always use self-patterning/striping yarn in bright colors and so knit a Vanilla sock pattern by Crazy Sock Lady – Kay Litton.
Other than socks, I like hats with matching cowls. Now that I have discovered carrying along suri, I need even more.
Last year everyone got sock yarn gnomes from me. I loved making them and they loved getting them. I realized this year that I didn’t keep one for myself. So…one more knitted sock yarn gnome into the mix just for my house.

I love to make Imagined Landscapes gnomes with sock yarn. My favorite hat is also made from sock yarn – Paper Bag Hat by Laura Jones. It’s free on Ravelry.
If I can use the criterion of how many times I have knitted a pattern to decide if it is a favorite, then my favorite thing to knit with sock yarn has to be the Baktus shawl. I have knitted this shallow triangular shawl well over a dozen times, with different kinds of sock yarn. Different fiber blends, different color variations. Every single one has been gorgeous, drapey, snuggly, perfect.
About ten years ago, I sifted through my collection of leftover sock yarn and discovered that I had enough, in the correct colors, to knit a pair of socks based on one of my favorite James May jumpers. (It’s the one he’s talking about in this video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsqqy-VoLcg) It’s a plain-vanilla sock pattern, but knit in the same stripey pattern as James’ jumper. I call them my Strata of the Human Condition socks.

I heartily agree with the many others that let the yarn do the work, for just soothing sock knitting.

socks! Even though I now live in FL, it’s cold here this weekend. There is always an opportunity to wear socks.
Sock yarn is my go to yarn, I use it for socks, shawls, sweaters and gnomes! It’s hard to pick one favorite, here’s a few: Leaves in a Stream and Time Heals shawls by Romi Hill, Jazzagal sweater by MaryAnnarella (Lyrical Knits), LoveNote by Tincan Knits and Gnutmeg gnome by Imagined Landscapes (all her gnomes are adorable).
I have been madly knitting fingerless knit gloves for all on my gift list. I’m using a patina pattern from yarnpirations. They go pretty quick as I only do the thumb. They look pretty impressive because of the built in patterns in the yarn.

I’ve made a lot of shawls with sock yarn. But my favorite sock project is the Weekender Light by Andrea Mowry. My goal in 2023 is to master sock knitting. I’ve been unsuccessful in my first and last attempt in terms of figuring out the fit. Winning this lovely yarn will motivate me further!!

The first piece I was really proud of was this asymmetrical shawl made of sock yarn. I got it at a farm in CT when I met my spouse’s aunt and uncle for the first time. I think of that memory every time I wear it!

overalls! yep, overalls. the name of the yarn was big girl pants so what else could i make? the pattern was from pickles oslo: omg overalls. really fun. i knit them through a heatwave in the summer of 2019. debuted them up at rhinebeck and then again at vkl the following winter before we knew what was coming… good to have something cozy to wear over the lockdown!

A scarf for Christmas. There’s no pattern but it’s easy to tell you. I bought red and green self-striping yarn, cast on 64 stitches, knit in the round until I ran out of yarn. I drew closed each end and sewed a jingle bell on each end. I’ve had it for years and still wear it every Christmas. I get a lot of nice comments on it every time I do!

Such a difficult question for the last day of the year! While I love to knit sweaters and shawls with fingering yarn, I have come back to knitting more socks in the past three years or so, exploring toe-up and top-down, different heels, lace and cables….I usually have 3 pairs on the go at a time: one in my purse (just in case!), one at the treadmill (toes and heels done elsewhere) and one in my knitting basket. I have landed on a preferred approach that I can knit from memory (though I stray from it when a sock pattern captures my heart): toe-up (Turkish CO), M1 increases, a lovely gusset, wedge-shaped heel turn with German short rows, Partridge Stitch heel flap and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off–usually done two-at-a-time on a circular needle. My favourite socks, with a delicate cable, were knit this way, whilst I sat at my mother’s bedside a year ago at this time as she quietly slipped from this life.

Socks! All day long. About three dozen pairs and counting. Love having bespoke feet.
This is a tough question to answer! It’s like asking which is my favorite dog (oh wait, I do have a favorite dog). I guess my current favorite are socks I knit while hiking the Routeburn Track in New Zealand. Lots of memories tied up in those socks!
I knit and crochet lots of little people and animals, so I’ve surely knit some of sock yarn: Hitty, from my own pattern, Fiona from Fiona Gamble’s doll and stuffed animal book, and especially their clothes. But my favorite pattern that I can nail down is https://www.yarnspirations.com/patons-sock-a-block-knit-socks/PAK0128-013792M.html, and the socks I knitted from it are my favorites, too. It helped that I made them on a river boat on the Danube. It would be a perfect pattern for those two skeins of yarn. On the ones I knitted, I reversed the order of yarns on the two socks, and a friend asked me if I’d done it by accident. Well, no.
Socks! I use a pattern called “BASIC SOCK” (fingering weight yarn) using either 60 or 64 stitches. I use a stretchy cast on and Kitchener the toes. Sometimes I use a patterned yarn for the body of the sock and plain yarn for toes, heels, cuffs. Or, I flip that! With the leftovers I make socks for toddlers/babies. They’re better than booties.
favorite thing I have made with sock yarn this year: I gathered several balls of leftovers and holding two different but somewhat coordinating strands together, made a great pair of socks using Summer Lee’s “Thicksgiving Cable Socks’ and I made them 10” tall so they are boot socks. I used different combinations for the cuff, cable, leg, heel, foot and toe (which matched the cuff). Nice and thick and warm and terrific-looking.
Socks are a go to project for me. I always have a pair on my needles regardless of whatever else I’m knitting. My favorite project this year was making a pair of watermelon socks for my daughter. I made a shortie version of The Crazy Sock Lady’s Sock Camp Picnic pattern and I used Biscotte Yarns color way Melon d’eau their Bis-Sock base. I have another skein of the same color way waiting patiently to be socks for me in the same pattern.
Gnomes lately — because all I have is scraps left from many years of my knitted socks.

Socks. But also cowls, scarves, shawls, fingerless mitts, mittens, hats, and even sweaters, esp. if there is some stranded knitting involved. I get a lot of pleasure out knitting with sock yarn. Oh, and it is fun to marl if skinny needles are not your thing.
My favorite hat to make is Saratoga Beanie
I have made little girlfriend sweaters for my granddaughters out of sock yarn. The pattern amounts to 2 sleeves joined by a 6-8 inch-ish 2×2 ribbed piece for across the back. It keeps little ones arms warm without the bulk of a sweater. I found the pattern in one of the perpetual knitting calendars. Ravelry also had a girlfriend shrug pattern – out of print, but photos for a general idea.
Well, making a pair of socks with sock yarn IS kind of magical. I’ve not done it enough but know about first casting on all those tiny stitches, manipulating the DPNs round and round, watching the pattern unfold and best of all — slipping it over my toes after casting off. I knit one sock at a time but the joy of putting just one sock on my foot on has carried me through the second sock. Easy-peasy.
A new knitter (< 1 year), I’m just dipping my toes into the waters of fingering weight yarn. Making a hat for my 3-year-old. Don’t have the link to the pattern but it’s called Myers Light from Galt House of Yarn.

I love knitting socks, but my favorite thing ever was a colorwork hat with trees from a pattern I created. The trees are knitted with a hand-dyed yarn in greens with some oranges and golds, and the background is a silvery, misty gray. It won fourth place at our county fair for small items.
Socks! Lots of socks, but still never enough socks. My go to pattern is Ann Budd’s 7 stitch basic sock pattern. Yarn leftovers are (slowly) being turned into squares for a Barn Raising quilt.

My favorite thing to knit with sock yarn was a pair of socks, of course. But very special socks knit, as it so happens, out of Barnyard Knits sock yarn in the Walk in the Woods color way, for my son to wear at his wedding. They looked dynamite with his classic tux as he and his wife to be stood near the Pigeon Point Lighthouse overlooking the Pacific Ocean reciting their vows. Those were some special socks!! (Oh, and I used a pattern out of the MDK Field Guide Wanderlust!)
This is a hard question to answer! Mostly I’ve made shawls from sock yarn, and have both of Jan Lucas’s sock yarn books. But of all the shawls I’ve knited, my favorite is probably Enchanted Tree shawl https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/enchanted-tree-shawl, with a narrow satin ribbon strung through the eyelets at the edge of the stocking knit body, and tied in a bow at the point.

My favourite sock-yarn-knit was one of my designs. Baby hats for spring and summer newborns. Sometimes it’s really chilly in an air-conditioned room and baby needs a cozy little hat for comfort. Not so thick that it seems like a stocking cap, and easily fits into the diaper bag. Pattern? Um? 2X2 rib all the way…cuff the bottom the first few weeks, then un-cuff as baby grows. Knit in the round.
This would be my favorite make-me-relax sock pattern – designer Kate Atherley’s Basic Ribbed Socks. A top-down basic but I do them 2-at-a-time on size 1 circular needle and I can almost do them in my sleep.

I made a pair of socks for my sister. I had a Norwegian sock book and combined different patterns. The cuff had 2 Latvian braids with a checkered pattern between them. Below that was a tree pattern.

When i first got into sock knitting, one of the first designs I knitted was Lisa Parker’s “April Fool socks”. The design was too complicated for me; I had to write out the rows on little cards. Those socks ended up being a great fit for me, and I loved the yarn I selected. They are my fave socks to this day, about 25 years later.
I love holding sock yarn together with other yarns. My favorite so far is a shawl made with two strands of sock yarn held together with a sport weight. Merino, silk, cashmere, marled intense blues with beads.

My current favorite thing made from sock yarn is my “Cheat Your Tweed” (by Hinterm Stein on Ravelry) jacket. I used three strands throughout in deep blues, greys both variegated and kettle-dye, and when I was afraid of running out before the sleeves were done, swapping out one of the blue and grey varigated with a light fingering blue and a lace weight grey. I made it a bit A-line and my preferred length. It is a comforting hug, in some ways calming like a weighted blanket.

My favorite thing I’ve made with sock yarn? Other than my favorite socks, of course. I weave with it! I warp up the loom with Colrain Lace (OMG such wonderful stuff!) and use the precious sock yarn as weft. Usually an undulating twill.

I so enjoyed Stephen West’s Botanic Shawl that I made another one in different colors of sock yarn. Sock yarn is also perfect for babies since it is machine washable.

I love making long tubular scarves in a two-row stripe using all my leftover sock yarns and those minis I couldn’t resist. I end up with delightful rainbows of sock yarn scarves.

My most challenging project with sock yarn was a pattern for Civil War socks. Rough-spun wool yarn in three colors and a pattern for soldiers from Chester County PA. Knitters used different designs on the socks which helped to identify bodies on the battle ground. My socks did not match when completed and I had to redo one after I asked the intended recipient to try on each for sizing. I love sock yarn but the Civil War socks are the most memorable.
I like fingerless mitts made with sock yarn. And the favorite use was to make ‘bitty’ bunnies.
I like making fingerless mitts. Not as bulky as other weights, and as warm as I need them to be. I generally just make my own vanilla pattern!
Currently working on the Botanic Shawl by Stephen West. It’s fairly mindless knitting so I can just relax and watch the colors shift as I knit. And I always have a couple pairs of socks in various stages of progress in little cotton bags that tuck into my purse in case the doctor runs late, lunch turns into a long chat, etc.
I made the Musselburgh hat by Ysolda and it’s just perfect for a skein of fingering!

I confess, without hesitation, to never having made a sock, let alone two. I made a nice shawl out of a large pile of sock yarn, Andrea Mowry fade-style, with sweet tiny wool poms on the corners that remind me of the little cotton poms on ankle socks in the late 70s/early 80s.
I actually love sweaters made in sock yard. Just the perfect weight for me!!

My most recent favorite thing with sock yarn is the Sofie scarf pattern, I’m on my second one in a little over a week. Very easy and quick, especially for knitting and watching my favorite shows!
Simple seed stitch baby hats!
I made two hats from variegated sock yarn that I have worn for years. Icannot remember the pattern name but it was knit in garter stitch and consisted of a band around the ears done on smaller needles and then a blousy top done on larger needles.
Novice here, only knitting for about 2.5 years and haven’t used sock weight yet. I do have plenty in my stash for… sock projects!
My favorite thing to do with sock yarn is buy it! I have made 1 pair of socks for my husband and one Uneek sock that I made twice and took apart 3 times. My favorite thing might be the Stephen West large honeycomb shawl if I ever figure out how to get past the very beginning…

I confess, I haven’t used sock yarn in sixty-four years. I was 18. That’s when I started knitting, and my first knitting project(s)—four pairs of argyle socks. No one told me it was supposed to be hard, so I bought a pattern and supplies and forged ahead. They came out great. My brothers wore them proudly. I guess I’ll have to try Barnyard Fibers sock yarn in 2023 so I can come full circle.
Hats. Brainless knitting and the yarn does all the work.
I had a lot of fun with the “Bloomsters” pattern for socks.
My most favorite project was the 2021 Stephen West MKAL Shawlography. It was challenging, the yarn I used (Emma’s Yarn) was so soft and I managed to actually finish it! The best thing of all is that I gifted the shawl to my BFF who is battling cancer. It was my way of hugging her as she goes through all the treatments and side effects.

I am just about “socked” out. For Christmas I made a neck warmer for my DIL. She and my son wear shorts and tee shirts in the winter here. With the latest cold front with the wind, I imagine she will find it easy to slip it on walking from her car to her office. It was the perfect weight for her.

I love the knitted linen stitch! Everyone thinks it’s woven and Churchmouse’s Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf is a great way to showcase this stitch. It is knitted length-wise and you create the fringe as you go. My favorite sock yarn knit is a tubular cowl – so warm and cushy. I knit it long enough to pull it up like a hood and still cover my neck. Love it.

I made a mobius cowl with two colors of sock yarn (aqua and deep purple) that striped all the way around with no beginning in sight. I used Kat Bhordi’s mobius cast on and knit until I ran out of yarn, iirc.

Love making Tin Can Knits Barley hats with two strands of sock. Fun, quick and simple.
I love the Willow Cowl. The photo on the pattern doesn’t do it justice. I made one with Claudia hand paints and it striped at the bottom then pooled near the top. This cowl starts out wider a the bottom, then narrows at the neck.

My favorite sock yarn project is a little wall hanging I made with some malabrigo varigated yarn. It’s a wall hanging, free form, so no pattern. But the malabrigo colors are a stunning gold/yellow/brown/red mix. I strung it on a piece of copper wire.

Way back in 2020, I knit Jennifer Steingass’ Hinterland sweater pattern (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hinterland-5) with Sweet Georgia Yarns Tough Love Sock and Malabrigo’s Mechita. It seemed to take forever, but the effort using smaller needles was worth it!

I am a hand spinner, and I rarely knit with commercial yarn. I knitted a huge Christmas stocking with my homespun for my son using a pattern from a Christmas stocking book.

`My favorite thing to knit is sweaters and I love how comfortable sock yarn sweaters are to wear. A favorite is “Not A Boring Sweater”. Lots of cables in the yoke and ribbing at sleeve edge and hem.
My favorite make with sock yarn is still in progress, but I am utterly in love with my mitered square sock yarn blanket. I work on it in fits and spurts, but always reminds me of not only the projects that the yarn ends came from, but of the scrappy handmade blankets my grandmother had at home before she passed. Lots of good memories.

My favorite sock yarn project is probably my Color Affection, made from Knitpicks Stroll Tonal is a perfect-for-me palette of greens & brown. I made it in the fall of my junior year in college, nearly left it on the train in Frankfurt, and I still wear it regularly ten years later!
