Dear everyone,

Here we are, on this holiday. We hope you’re finding peace and calm.

We have something of a tradition at MDK of creating a playlist of songs to mark the season. Everybody on the MDK team picks favorites, and we compile them into a playlist for you.

It is wildly eclectic, given the folks here, and it’s not a holiday playlist—just a bunch of great songs.

You can hear previews in this widget. Click here to see our playlist in your browser. You’ll need a free Spotify account to hear the full songs.

We hope you find surprises and favorites in the mix, fun to knit to.

Please note that MDK World Headquarters will be closed until Tuesday, January 3—we’ll be taking a break.

But you won’t be able to tell! Our End-of-Year Sale is on, and we’ll be posting every day as always.

Wishing you a joyous holiday!

Love,

Allison, Ann, Ashley, Chris, Cristina, DG, Hannah, Kay, and Nathan

    • I am working on the dustland socks right now

    • I made dozens of socks until I retired and moved to a warmer climate. Now it’s baby sweaters for the grand kids. Usually my own riff on a basic pattern.

    • My favorite sock yarn project is my Musselburgh hat. Warm, reversible and just plain fun to wear!

    • Little mini mittens with the odds and ends of my sock yarn.

    • The “Multnomah” wrap always looks great in sock yarn. It really shows off all the colours!

      • BK All Day Shawl. Used sock yarn.
        My first brioche venture
Adore the final product but getting there was tough and not rushing toward another brioche.

        • I wish it were socks. I’ve only ever tried on pair that currently a wip that is hibernating. New sock yarn will probably end up as a sweater ( a whole body hug!)

    • Yes! This recipe is how I entered the previously mysterious world of sock making.

      • I made a simple scarf/shawlette for a teacher and it was such a fun, rewarding project. Can’t wait to make more!

      • Socks mostly using Susan B. Anderson’s How I Make My Socks pattern. I’ve also enjoyed making tiny hat ornaments not following any pattern.

        • I have a new fascination with using my beautiful single skeins of sock yarn for the Musselburgh hat.

      • It has to be socks. But a close second is knitted mice for the cat.

  • Not much if a scarf or shawl person but I’ve made innumerable socks using a very basic pattern from Churchmouse Yarns & Tea

    • I’ve made many fingerless mitts/hand warmers with sock yarn. It’s a special challenge to use self-striping and also getting them to match!

    • Socks mostly but I do love a nice cozy shawlette. My own 2:2 rib sock pattern fits my leg and ankle and my toe shaping for a right and left foot means no bunching in the toes!

      • Fingerless mitts.

  • Linus scarf (Annett Cordes)(Ravelry). An absolutely beautiful and wearable scarf – drapes perfectly and fun to knit.

  • Tiny knitted cat. Free Ravelry pattern.

    • I knit a bunch of socks in mid 2000s but never actually wore them. I guess I just don’t like them? Or maybe I just need to pair with my barely worn clogs. I have a healthy sock yarn stash that I’ve been knitting cowls, shawls, hats, and mittens instead. Love reading all the comments for new project ideas!

    • Love this!

    • Wonderful find! Thanks for sharing! My son and his family foster kittens when they are too young to be adopted. They will love a few of these and I will love making them.

    • With gradient and self patterning color yarn, I love Hermione’s sock pattern because it works nicely with any colorful sock yarn, it has the standard flap and gusset heel and the tidy looking garter edge on the flap
It shows off the color way
      https://www.ravelry.com/projects/HeyKerrieAnn/hermiones-everyday-socks

      • I’m a sock newbie & procrastinated due to Fear Of Heels. Currently learning a Vanilla Socks pattern.

  • Ecken + Kanten by Martina Behm. Use one yarn or modify with leftovers. I’ve used various weights and textures – sometimes in the same wrap, but really like doing each of the “blocks” with a variety of sock yarns. I do enjoy most projects out of fingering weight yarn!

    • A darl8ng baby sweater and booties

      • Okay, those are fun too.

    • Hitchhiker is the perfect pattern for sock yarn!

      • I agree as well. Hitchhiker is fun to knit and fun to wear.

      • Yes definitely

      • Agreed. Love my Hitchhiker – though I didn’t quite get 42 “teeth” on the edge.

  • Fingerless mitts

  • A stuffed hippopotamus. And socks!

    • Socks from the Field Guide Wandering, with fish lips heels. They are my DH’s favorite gifts.

  • Fingerless mitts. They are warm, soft, and very flexiblle. Great for reading in bed at night.

  • When my kids were little I made tiny dolls out of sock yarn, they were so fun to make but it was so long ago now I’ve no idea what the pattern was, I think it was a Waldorf school pattern. Thanks for the playlist!

  • The sleeping kitten from current making magazine to look like our cat PEAKY, an unusual tonkinese cat!

  • I LOVE sock knitting. I am on a quest for the perfect vanilla sock pattern. I don’t need the challenge of a complicated pattern. I’m looking for zen. Let the yarn do the work. My fav is Susan B. Anderson’s How I Make My Socks from her blog. Although Tracie Millar has convinced me to try making DK weight socks. I only use DPNs because I love how it freaks out the muggles.

    • Get Knitting Rules by Stephanie Pearl McFee! The best guidelines ever, or maybe EZ!

    • Yes! Me too! Freaks ’em right out. After trying different heels/toes, I found my favorites and let the gorgeous yarn do the work. Sock are for relaxing, I’m with you there! I made my 2nd Boxy by Joji out of sock leftovers hoping to use them all up. But no, they multiplied when I wasn’t looking. Still, I love my Sweater of Many Colors.
      https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/boxy

  • Birds & Ships cowl by Caitlin Hunter! Easy to follow pattern and just beautiful

    • Lots and lots of vanilla socks, a few fancy ones plus scrap happy hats and mitts

      • The Yarn Harlots plain vanilla sock guidelines and doubled sock yarn with size 2 circulars has been my idea of happiness for 15 years or so!

  • I’ve made shawls, socks, fingerless mitts and even a sweater out of sock yarn but I have to say, socks are definitely my favorite thing to knit

  • I’ve never knit socks — but love sock yarn for other items, scarves, etc… hard to come up w/ the specific patterns for those other items but I love making toys & sock yarn is ALWAYS great for toys! There are 2 sizes for an easy Knubbelchen, but here’s the link for the mini: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/knubbelchen-minis

  • I love knitting socks, but fingering weight shawls are a passion! Be Simple (Ravelry) & Fuss Free Shawl (Louise Tilbrook Everyday Knitter) are among my most repeated patterns, and there’s also Hitchhiker by Martina Behm found on Ravelry)

  • Trying my hand at making a pair of over the knee socks with a cashmere blend of yarn. Pattern Secret Garden Socks from Ravelry

    • I have to say I love making socks with sock yarn. If I don’t use a pattern, I use Ann Budd’s basic sock pattern as my go-to pattern but use 2 circulars instead of dpns. It’s a great pattern when you have self-striping yarn.

  • I made a lacey beaded shawl with sock yarn. Softest, warm and cuddly too!

    • Baby cardigan and multicolored fringed triangular shawl

  • Andrea Mowry’s “Bear Paw Socks” with 2-strands of sock yarn. I can’t stop making them! https://ravel.me/bear-paw-socks

  • Lots of socks and have started weaving with mostly sock yarns.
    Happy Holidays and knitting!

  • Hats, fingerless mitts, and cowls

  • The Hitchhiker pattern smallish scarf, Afrw hats and of course socks!

  • Hats. I love hats out of fingering weight yarn!

    • Me, too! A good slouchy hat in fingering weight is great TV knitting.

  • Shop Window Socks by Allison Lutes (can find on Ravelry). They are cute and the perfect beginner stranded color work pattern. Not too complicated and just an embellishment of stranded knitting. I used a precious stash skein that I had been holding for a long time, that is no longer available.

  • Socks from the book Toe-Up 2-at-a-Time Socks by Melissa Morgan-Oakes are my favorites. I use the magic loop method.

  • I’ve made lots of socks and shawls, but next year I’m going to make a Howl https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/howl-4

It’s by local icon StevenBe. I found his namesake LYS in a general Twin Cities guidebook, so that was awesome!

  • The As you wish wrap by Mary Annarella Such a fun mkal.

    • I agree, that is a beautiful wrap.

  • Reyna scarf on Ravelry. I’ve made several .

  • Hitchhiker shawls. Love them.

  • Goldfinch (by Andrea Mowry) is my favorite. Pattern is written for sport weight, so I sized down just a bit. I used three tonals that I loved, and I still reach for that shawl often.

  • Most recently: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/saki-clog-socks using Skeincocaine yarn.

  • sweaters, shawls, cowls, hats, mitts, and of course, socks!

  • I love to knit vanilla socks and stripe them with leftover sock yarn as well as knitting Gnomes. I knit a year of gnomes to gift to my Granddaughter using sock yarn from Imagined Landscape who is the gnome designer on Ravelry. So fun. Check it out

  • Socks of course, and Barnyard Knits is one of my go-to yarns! Great giveaway-thanks!

  • I’ve made lots of things out of sick yarn but not that many socks! Probably my favorite is the Aimee cardigan by Joji Locatelli as that used 5 different skeins I had.

  • I love making shawls and cowls with sock yarn. I just finished Pure Joy by Joji using two skeins of Barnyard Knits yarn and it was a perfect match of yarn to pattern.

  • I love all the Willow Cowls I have made with sock yarn.

  • Miniature socks, hats and sweaters for the Christmas tree!

    • I do this every year. So much fun to make and then give away.

  • Hard to pick a fave, made so many socks and shawls out of fingering! Right now I’m loving bundling up in my Tubularity, by Martina Behm. A fun knit, and a good use for a gradient set or assorted leftovers or mink skeins…

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tubularity

  • My Rhinebeck 2021 splurge was a six-color gradient from Fiber Optic Yarns, which I knit into the Large Honeycombs Shawl by Stephen West. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever made. This year’s splurge was one of their infinity gradients, and I’m partway through the Small Honeycombs Shawl that was included in the pattern. This gradient is a full rainbow with 14 colors and I love the shawl it’s making even more than last year’s. My new favorite!

  • Romi Hill’s High Sierra Shawl. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/high-sierra-shawl The construction was entertaining and it wasn’t hard and people always love it when I wear it.

  • I usually double strand finer yarns in projects with a plain wool to “tweed” and let me use larger needles for socks at a slightly bigger gauge and take it easy on eyes and hands. Pattern i like are simple and came from an older thin booklet from a Philosopher’s wool collaboration or one in a thinner sock booklet from maybe interweave w about twenty patterns in it. They are all fun.

    • The second booklet is actually called “Socks:a Spinoff special publication” and has a teal cover w pictures inset. Lots of sock types and gauges are in its patterns.

  • Nokonoko, a sweater by Miyuki Watanabe, using Malabrigo Sock. A really wonderful pattern. It came out great and it is the perfect weight for fall here in New England. Mostly I make shawls with sock yarn. So many shawls.

  • Socks, toe up, gusset, 2×2 rib, perfect fit for me and for DH. But this past year or so I have been making Ysolda’s Musselburgh hat.

  • Hitchhiker! Also Joji’s Lone Skein shawl – so fun watching the colors in a variegated skein unfold, and playing a little yarn chicken (I lost, but adapted well). For those looking for “vanilla socks,” I love the Vanilla Latte socks pattern.

  • Socks! This Christmas, I am giving my family a grab-bag full of hand knit socks because I make so many.

  • I had some yellow, speckled yarn that I was dubious about making socks with. They are my favorite pair!

  • I haven’t conquered socks yet but the Stranwanderer shawl was a personal achievement

    • You can do it! Try top down, with afterthought/forethought heels. I still make mine that way!

  • I recently made a matching Medley hat and fingerless mitts by holding sock yarn double. It’s a Helen Stewart pattern.

  • Socks. (And then gnomes and cat toys with the leftovers.)

  • Socks, socks, oh, and darning! Thanks for the links. Love the window kitten; I’ll be all over that.

  • Not socks, but a little hat. So soft!
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/late-night-hat

    • Cute! Thanks for sharing.

  • Not much of a sock knitter…love shawls!

  • Trying to see become enthusiastic about socks as they are difficult to find in my size. Maybe I have not found the right yarn yet.

  • A sock! I have SSS single sock syndrome. Ready to jump in with both feet in 2023.

  • I knit miniature socks, hats and sweaters for the Christmas tree at this time of year.

  • Timeless Arrow socks by Kay Litton. Merry Christmas and thanks for the yearlong snippets!

  • I struggle to actually finish knitting projects, but I am very proud to have finished Sharon Air by Casapinka using the umpteen mini skeins i had in stash. I will be wearing it to our Christmas dinner party!

  • “A Girl Thing” hat by Joji Locatelli – I’ve made several.

  • Socks of course. Helen Stewart and Rachel Coopey have a lot of beautiful designs. Susan B Anderson has a nice basic sock. Lucy Neatby has great hints and tips for fit and techniques. These are only a few of the rabbit holes of sock knitting. I wouldn’t hesitate to use sock yarn for hats or gloves or mittens.

  • Why socks of course! I use a basic pattern called simply socks and I modify the leg for whatever suits the yarn.

  • I’ve made lots of socks and shawls and toys with sock yarn but probably the one that I love and wear the most is the Philomena shawl by erineen designs. It was an mkal a few years ago during the Maine yarn cruise and I used yarn I acquired during that summer. And the leftovers are being worked into a gnome right now! I love that sock yarn leftovers have so many uses.
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/philomena-shawl-2

  • I like to use fingering weight yarn when I make something using the Inside Out Double Knitting technique!

  • I love working with sock weight yarn. (Most of my knits are ‘small needle knitting’). I loved making the s-curve wrap: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/s-curve
I made it out of leftover yarn from many other projects.

  • My favorite things are gnomes.

  • Merry Christmas, all!
It’s very difficult to narrow it down to just one favorite as I’m very indecisive…I love smaller projects that I can take with me so it may be the Tiny Owl Knits Bee Keeper’s quilt, because I can use almost every bit of yarn! And I am able to acquire donations from other knitters to add to the scrappy appeal of the quilt. However, I do love me some socks (such a portable conversation starter) and have been on a crusade to turn folks on to hand knit for lots of years, (this obsession is responsible for the ever growing quilt).

  • Simple Ziggurat Top by Asa Tricosa. A long sleeve sweater with positive ease. I live in it during our brief Florida winter!

  • I made a sock bunny for a wee one! I don’t remember the pattern, but it was perfect with a variegated yarn. It looked almost tie-dyed! And the long ears were adorable.

  • I made a blanket – perfect weight for living in Florida. Took awhile, but it’s so soft and comfy – perfect for when there’s a slight chill in the air.

  • What else? My first sock ever. And it started with MDK field guide

  • Hitchhiker and Trillium shawls by Martina Behm.

  • My first “sock” shawl pattern is Easy Goes It. This is a freebie on Ravelry. Thousands have made it and fun to see all the colorways. Merry Christmas!

  • Sock yarn fav, Headlands shawl,by Romi Hill. (Love her patterns) Or as I call it, “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”

    • Sweaters!!! And shawls too!! I have never knit one sock in 60 years of knitting. Haha!!!

  • Socks! Seriously, what beats a warm woolen hand knit pair of socks when it’s such arctic weather out there?

  • Yanagi by Maiko Hikosaka, a beautiful toe-up sock. I just finished my 4th pair. It has a really pretty 14 stitch, 6 row lace pattern that is easy to memorize.

  • I love making shawls with intricate stitch patterns–lace, cables, and/or texture. Happy holidays, everyone!!

    • Right now working on Bojagi by Knitboop.

  • My favorite thing I’ve made with sock yarn this past year is a small triangular shawl with sawtooth edge by a German publisher. So far I have made and given away seven.

  • Plain vanilla socks, use the pattern from Susan Anderson. It is a simple yet comfy sock.

  • The simple Elemental Wrap from Purl Soho. It’s easy and practical.

  • I don’t make socks but have knit the most beautiful shawls and wraps using sock yarn. One of my favorite wraps is Diffraction, on Ravelry. It uses one skein of a solid color and one of a multi-colored sock yarn. Looks amazing together.

  • I made mittens for my 5 month old granddaughter with sick yarn.

  • Fingerless gloves- no particular pattern, mostly just a tube with or without a thumb gusset. Easy peasy!

  • I love the Money socks by Cookie A. I’ve made them 1.5 times.

  • The Holden shawlette. I think I’ve made around ten of them!

  • My fave is Light and Up by Caroline Wiens. I’ve made three and considered starting another the other day. I wear them a lot. The tassels keep the whole thing in place so I don’t have to constantly readjust it.

  • By far my favorite things I’ve made with sock yarn are my many pairs of socks. I wear them daily and they give me great joy. Merry Christmas!!!

  • a scarf and a shawlette! haven’t attempted socks yet!

  • As an exercise in helical stripes I used odds and ends of sock yarn to knit Carol Feller’s Helly hat. It’s one of my favorites.

  • Longer socks that don’t cut off my circulation and stay up.

  • My favorite thing made with sock yarn? Has to be…socks! I’ve done shawls and cowls and mitts, but warm comfortable socks top the list. Soft ones, striped ones, cable or lace!

  • Definitely the Hitchiker by Martina Behm. It’s lovely in an interesting Crazy Zauberball, and I have knit at least six.

  • A slouchy hat, but I love to knit socks as well.

  • Love Note by Tincanknits. Merino superwash sock handdye held with a strand of mohair!

  • Socks and more socks. Also a baby blanket from small stash balls with modular knit squares and of course fingerless gloves. And don’t forget long scarfs from stash balls too. Love sock yummy sock yarn !!!

  • Baby Surprise Jackets! My pattern is from an actual EZ book, but I know it’s on Ravelry somewhere. And socks of course…

  • I have never knit socks, but I have put sock yarn into a number of Andrea Mowry patterns.

  • Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teague

  • I love knitting socks and wearing them. Favorite pattern is DRK Everyday socks. This is my go-to pattern for gifting handmade socks.

  • I love knitting socks and wearing them but I offer up Day of the Dead cowl https://www.ravelry.com/projects/eaewing/day-of-the-dead-cowl

  • Socks! Hermione’s Everyday Socks is a favorite.

  • socks!

  • Socks, of course. I’ve also had fun making a slouchy hat.

  • I love buying sock yarn but actually have knit very few socks. I have quite a stash, so my knitting plans for 2023 include mastering a basic sock pattern and then using up all that yarn!

  • An infinity crochet scarf from Brianna K.

  • Socks!

  • I’m covered top and bottom with sock yarn…. Beautiful scarves ( ok, stop already!) and socks (no, I do not have enough!). So much knitting to do, and 5 grands just itching to learn!

  • Go gnomes! So many gnomes, and this year added a few Wee Evergreen trees to add to my daughters gnome collection. Gee…I must try the Hitchhiker……

  • Soft, squishy, warm socks that are comfortable around my ankles that I can wear to bed at night to keep my feet all toasty warm. I have a lovely toe-up recipe that I use.

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lifestyle-toe-up-socks—no-swatch-needed

  • I don’t know if this is my fave, but it was fun and it’s cute! Knit with Noro
    Kureyon Sock.

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/design-11—childs-ruffled-cardigan

  • My favorite thing make with sock yarn was a Léloa shawl by Berangere Cailliau. An absolutely beautiful knit that was easy TV watching. I gave the first one away to a friend. I would love to make another! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/leloa

  • Cowls with all the varigated yarn.

  • Socks! My favorite travel project. I have a pair that I worked on for a full year while traveling. I put about 31,000 miles on those socks, and took them up Mt Washington in NH, Pike’s Peak in CO, and Mt San Jacinto in CA. Another pair I did one sock on a cruise around the British Isles and the second on a work trip to the Netherlands and Germany. I’ve got pictures of my socks in progress on planes, trains, ferries, cruise ships, duck boats and monorails!

  • Strandwanderer – it’s a great pattern for that variegated yarn that looks great in the skein but like clown barf when you stockinette (or even garter) it. The stripes let you have little chunks of colour – brilliant. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/strandwanderer

  • Socks! Plain Vanilla by Hiromi Nagasawa.
Love this pattern so much! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/plain-vanilla-socks-2

  • mitts for a friend who lost a finger – no pattern just knit to certain dimensions

  • So many socks. And more socks. I’ve had a rough few years culminating in my mom’s death the first night of Arne and Carlos when I was there in Nashville. About 10 days ago I picked out a sock pattern with multiple charts and complicated stitches for the first time in years. I used to love to knit all the crazy socks and slowly, slowly, the space used caring for others is filling up with care for me and an ability to execute tricky maneuvers with tiny needles. I’m considering knitting through a couple of my sock books and refilling my sock drawer with all the cables and lace in miniature.

  • Besides socks? I love socks!❤️❤️. The silliest was Grumpy the Lump of Coal. I made as many as I could from 1 skein. When people were scroogy at work I put one on their desk. Pattern on Ravelry.

  • Christmas ornament of course!

  • Favorite thing I’ve knit with sock yarn is my Iona blanket, pattern by Lucy Hague.

  • This would be for my first socks!

    • Me too! A goal for the coming year

  • Happy holidays to you all at MDK and thank you for all you do for us, your adoring public! I love the Clincher scarf pattern for sock yarn. It’s a cute little tapered scarf with an icord edging that forms loops through which you thread the pointy end of the scarf.

  • Leave Gnome Stone Unturned. It turned out really cute. But oh those fiddly little pieces. By the time I finish I swear I’ll never make another. But I now have 3 and one in the works. So I guess I should just get used to those little parts. Happy holidays everybody!

  • Shawls mostly, and sometimes socks

  • Gnomes of all sorts by Imagined Landscapes

  • I’ve done sweaters and socks, hats and mittens, color work and crochet, but my favorite might still be Roxie the Hippo!

  • A saggy, baggy Boxy sweater which I love to wear. This was my only deviation from the socks that keep my feet happy in winter.

  • Sipalu Bag by Knit Picks. I take the liberty of felting the bag for a tighter finished product. If felting it needs to be made out of 100% wool.

  • Socks of course, with the FishLipsKissHeel. Perfect every time!

  • This beautiful Celtic cushion with such an unusual construction: a combination of knitting in the round with steeking for the 2 middle sections and then picking up around each edge for the border. Mine turned out as gorgeous as the pattern picture. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/celtic-pillow

    • This is a beautiful pattern, one I’ve always wanted to knit. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • I make baby hats, mittens, and socks out of sock yarn and donate them to a local charity. I am also working on a multi-year project: a blanket made out of sock yarn leftovers . . . 5 grams makes one square. I think I’m about halfway – it’s for a queen sized bed. I’d be delighted to trade leftovers with anyone else in the continental US.

  • Socks!!! I love making socks and always have a pair on the needles. I’ve learned that I can knit while traveling without getting car/air sick, so trips have become that much more exciting, and socks are my favorite travel knit!!!

  • Socks and like someone else said I let the sock yarn do the work. Plain vanilla with a heel flap and gusset for me.

  • Gnomes and mini stockings and mini sweaters for my Christmas tree

  • Socks! My favorite pattern at the moment is Prairie Socks by Kay F. Jones. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/prairie-socks

  • A knitted mushroom for the Christmas tree: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/christmas-toadstool
    I used Patons sock yarn.

  • Socks. I love having a variety of socks. Comfort and Joy is one of my favorites.

  • I made the Winterfell cardigan by Katrin Schneider with sock yarn bought from an indie dyer. It fit really well so I made a second one and will probably make another one in 2023 by slightly altering the slip stitch pattern!

  • Versatile- used many ways!

  • Fingerless mitts from a pattern written by a friend.

  • Socks, I loved knitting socks and since moving to a colder winter climate I now wear them all the time

  • A gnome for a Christmas gift to a favorite friend. It is oh gnome you.didn’t.

  • I had a favorite pair of black gloves, just an inexpensive mass produced pair. I had to replace the thumb and index finger of the right hand glove when they wore out, using some leftover self striping yarn. Now I lost the left glove, so I guess I will have to knit another one. Not sure if I have enough of that yarn left!

  • Hats.
    There’s something about a sock yarn hat….

  • Socks and more socks! I usually just pick an interesting stitch pattern for the leg and another for the heel, and funnel them into a sort of sock-formula that I’ve fine-tuned to fit my feet. But one pattern I made a couple of times and enjoyed is Evelyn A. Clark’s “Waving Lace”: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/waving-lace-socks

  • Held double to make a Flax sweater for a little one!

  • Never knitted socks, but lots of pairs of fingerless mitts! Happy Holidays!

  • I made my friend a small scarf called Spring Thing from gorgeous sock yarn and I get such a kick every time I see her wear it.

  • MDK Field Guide 11, basketweave pattern, with magic heel https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/magic-heel-socks

  • I’ve made several of the Pembroke scarf, with sock yarn and a strand of lace mohair held together, came out nicely. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pembroke-scarf-2

  • Socks! It took me a long time to understand why people like to make socks. I finally got it a couple years ago. Lots of possibilities on a small canvas.

  • Hard to choose, but I’ll go with my Melodious Wrap made with Malabrigo Sock and Silkpaca in alternating bands of stockinette and reverse stockinette. The result has great drape and texture, is fun and easy to wear, and always elicits compliments. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/melodious-wrap

  • I’ve made it all with sock yarn – shawls, sweaters, etc, but my favorite thing to make with sock yarn is SOCKS!

  • Fingerless mitts in a crazy variegated colored yarn for my 6 yo, when I was still cool and knitting was a mystery.

  • Sock yarn + gradient mohair strategically placed = AWESOME Leftover City Cowl!!
Thank you for another year of good writing and great knitting ideas. Total daily fan here ☺️

  • Diamonds not Pearls, a Tunisian crochet sweater! The first time I saw it, I wanted to make one for me so I taught myself Tunisian crochet and went for it! Fabulous pattern for a beginner. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/diamonds-not-pearls

  • We’ll, that would have to be a blanket! Either Parcheesi or Safe At Home!! Happy Holidays, MDK Team!

  • I currently enjoy using all my leftover sock or fingering weight yarn to make a small throw or afghan. Now it is Granny Stripe by Attic24. It is crocheted but there are many ideas out there for knitting one.

  • Lace 22-01 shawl by Nancy Lekx

  • I’ve knit fingerless gloves from a stretchy sock yarn that I love. I planning to try some socks again now that I got Season 7 of Knitstars instructions video.

  • A have a favorite pattern within a favorite category: slouch hats. A slouch hat knit with sock yarn doesn’t flatten my hair as much as other hats, while still keeping me warm. I have made, and loved, many sock yarn slouches over the years, but my favorite is Ambah O’Brien’s mirri hat. (It’s the eyelets!) I have made 3 for myself so far, gotten lots of complements, so plan to make more as gifts.

  • Toe-up knee socks in Regia Perfect Rainbow (sort of a cobbled together pattern) for my son. He wore them to Pride with high-top Chucks. Yes, wool knee socks in June. I think he must like them—that takes commitment.

  • Not to be boring, but: socks!

I have been teaching myself to do toe-up, 2 at a time mostly using https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/toe-up-2-at-a-time-socks

  • Well, socks of course. My favorite is self stripping, the color changes never get old. My favorite pattern is the vanilla sock from the Yarn Harlot

  • Shawls!

  • A stocking hat for my daughter that she requested for Christmas. All I had left to do was weave in the ends and I misplaced it. She lives in another state and I just found it. I will finish and mail it after Christmas because that is when the post office will be open again.

  • Miller’s Daughter shawl by Melanie Berg. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-millers-daughter-2

  • Thanks for the great playlist.
With all the beautiful colors in the fingering weight yarns, I usually knit vanilla socks and let the yarn do the designing

  • Socks of course! Any and all, but I’ve also have made a couple of #Passerinehat in sock yarn (Three Fates Yarn, Terra sock) that turned out beautifully. Thanks for the giveaway❣️

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/passerine-hat

    • Love this pattern. I’ve had it in my favorites for a long time, but never made it. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • My favorite socks are the ones I make for my friends.

  • I had a new grand baby coming….I took all my leftover sock yarn and made a bowl full of baby booties. It was so satisfying to use up all the odds and ends and the booties were adorable!

  • Oh, that’s easy! My MDK’s Debutante Sock Knitter Award! Why, you ask? Because now I can say I am an award winning knitter! It’s all about the bragging rights!

  • Socks, toe up and Cat Bordhi’s Sweet Tomato Heel!

  • Steven West annual MKAL!

  • My favorite sock yarn project was socks! I dyed the yarn in a class and then made my first pair of socks

  • a HEART (https://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter08/PATTheart.php) from Malabrigo sock yarn – anatomically correct, and a perfect wedding present!

and of course socks, and more socks, and shawls (e.g. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/step-it-up-knit-shawl), and fingerless mitts.

  • Mostly socks. However, I recently knit a “Barley Light” hat from Tin Can Knits.

  • I haven’t made any adult socks with sock yarn, but have made several pair of baby booties. I’m working on the Morning Walk hat right now that uses two strands of sock yarn held together.

  • One of my favorite things I have made with sock yarn, are socks. I made socks for oldest sim and middle kid and it makes me happy every time I see them wearing them.

  • I jump at the chance to make a Baby Surprise Jacket out of washable sock yarn.

  • Fingerless gloves from a book Sock yarn not just for socks. The yarn I used was self patterning.

  • My own mashed up, toe up, fleegle heel, magic loop sock pattern! Love the playlist. Thank you.

  • Anything Steven West in the shawl dept!

  • Extremely gratified to see “Cool for Cats” included on the playlist. Well the best thing I made with sock yarn was socks I guess! Definitely appreciating hand made socks in this frosty weather!

  • Shawls! And fingerless mitts

  • I am an avid sock knitter, shawls, too, especially lace shawls. But my new love is fingering weight sweaters!

  • I like to make shawls & scarves with sock yarn!!

  • Any cowl. Love sock yarn!

  • Not socks! I love making baby sweaters from sock yarn.

  • Music! For the win.
Don’t knit socks – but use the pretties for shawls.

  • Merry Christmas to all! I am not yet brave enough for socks, but I have made a lovely baby layette (hat, blanket, booties) for a sweet little summer arrival. Also love using it for shawls (my passion, along with baby blankets).

  • I love using sock yarn for infant Baby Surprise Jackets by Elizabeth Zimmerman. I make one during/after each conference I go to. Right now I am up to 36 knitted. At my conference in February I will start/finish my 37th one.

  • Lots of socks. I made an earbud pouch which is mighty useful.

  • Made a lovely Relax sweater using MadTosh sock https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/relax-5

  • Tie between the Hanami Wrap I made ages ago and the Find Your Fade I finally finished.

  • I have never used sock yarn! I tend to go for the larger diameters and do not even own needles small enough to knit socks. I live at a higher elevation and so I need shawls that are more than lovely, they keep me warm. Worsted weight is the way to go! Merry Christmas, everyone!

  • Most favorite recent project made with sock yarn was Aiobhe Ni’s “Phoenix Hat.” Tunisian crochet with a lovely subtle wave pattern. It looks harder than it is and works up fast. Aiobhe’s patterns use a charting system that is a bit unusual. I’ve made many of her designs, but it had been awhile and the hardest part about the hat was reminding myself of how to read the chart. (She explains it all very well and has videos to go along. Practice on a small piece helps a lot!) Ravelry link to the hat — https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/phoenix-hat

  • Sock yarn is probably my favorite to knit and stash. The most fun thing I ever made was the tiny chickens from mochimochi world. My bff and I knit them over Zoom in 2020 and they brought us so much joy in a dark time. I knit a bunch and gave them to friends as talismans of levity. I still keep one in my purse.

  • Cable my big toes socks to wear with slippers (aka toe post sandals).

  • Of course socks are the best, but I also make shawls/scarves. The most rewarding, creative, and relaxing is to make a basic triangle with the increases going down each side of the center spine. I use different stitches for the body as it grows. This offers the opportunity to mix detailed stitch patterns with basic depending on my mood! Love sock yarn and tiny needles…

  • I made a massive (for me) sock yarn project, a Moon and Other Satellites shawl by Larissa Brown:

    https://www.ravelry.com/projects/MeiLin/the-moon–other-satellites

Five different sock yarns from Briggs & Little, Damselfly, and Hazel Knits. It’s HYOOGE and I LOVE it.

  • I love every single musselburgh hat I’ve made with sock yarn. Such a great pattern to modify in a multitude of ways.

  • Just plain old vanilla socks. Kid #2 just pointed out to me that the ones I made him 6 years ago have a couple of small holes. Guess I need to darn those and start some more for him.

    • I knit mostly 2 at a time Toe up, Sweet Tomato heel by Cat Bordhi. I love any of her sock patterns or Lucy Neatby’s Crenellated toe up socks.

  • Hitchhiker shawl for me

  • Lots of socks but my favorite thing I’ve made was using sock yarn leftovers to make Myrtle Bear and a tiny bear sweater … https://www.ravelry.com/projects/folklorica/myrtil-bear

  • I love me a fingering weight shawl. Perfect weight around the neck on cool days.

  • Lovely giveaway! My favourite sock yarn project is the Flabellum scarf by Wollschnegge, a paid pattern on Ravelry. It was my first shawl project and a wonderful way to pair a tonal yarn and a wildly-coloured hand-dyed yarn. It doesn’t look like much on the Raverlry pattern page, but I always get compliments when I wear it.

  • I guess I have to say Vanilla Socks on DPS by Kate Litton (Crazy Sock Lady). Only I made them using the Magic Loop method.
I also began an entrelac scarf using Noro Silk Garden sock yarn, but never finished it.

    • That should have been DPNs

  • I thought that my socks would be my number 1 answer because I am sock obsessed! But now, that I have seen the kitty pattern posted below…I know that kitties will be my new favorite thing to make with sock yarn!!!! Thank you for posting that link! I can’t wait to start!

  • I haven’t quite fallen for knitting socks yet – I’m hoping third time’s the charm and two circulars works for me. I love freaking out the muggles with DPNs but have a laddering issue and just don’t like Magic Loop.

In the meantime sock yarn is great for hats, cowls, infinity scarves and shawls. I’ve loved most all the patterns I’ve used but perhaps the most stunning combination of yarn & pattern was Petals and Picots (https://www.ravelry.com/projects/graycm/petals–picots).

  • And just like that! My queue is so much longer, lol.

I like socks & shawls, but I’ve started on a huge project of a granny square blanket. With tiny, 3 inch squares. Because after decades of disliking them, I suddenly can’t get enough of granny squares!

    Here’s a basic pattern
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/classic-granny-square-7

  • DRK everyday socks !

  • I know many things can be made with sock yarn besides socks but I am always working on a new pair and so I never seem to get on to that next thing. I always use self-patterning/striping yarn in bright colors and so knit a Vanilla sock pattern by Crazy Sock Lady – Kay Litton.

  • Other than socks, I like hats with matching cowls. Now that I have discovered carrying along suri, I need even more.

  • Last year everyone got sock yarn gnomes from me. I loved making them and they loved getting them. I realized this year that I didn’t keep one for myself. So…one more knitted sock yarn gnome into the mix just for my house.

  • at least 6 pairs of Seduction socks, by Ann Budd (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/seduction-socks). Great fit and good looks, every time

  • Stephen West’s 2018 Mystery Shawl “Texture Time”. 5 skeins of fingering! It is enormous!

  • My own mash up, toe-up, magic-loop, fleegle heel socks.

  • I love collecting the beautiful colors, but haven’t made a whole lot with it. I shawl and a pair of mitts. Beautiful!

  • I’ve managed just about every type of knitted garment with sock yarn but my favorite are socks. Also Joji’s Starting Point shawl would be near the top of the list.

  • Socks!

  • Lovely bright striped cowl.

  • I fell in love with the Butterfly/Papillon pattern with Urth yarn at a yarn shop in Saratoga Springs, NY. I learned German short rows and loved the colorful stained glass effect. It was a wonderful experience to knit and it remains one of my most loved knits.

  • Anything by Janina Kallio!

  • So hard to pick! My Bottom Line Pullover from the Downtown Field Guide is a lovely and sentimental favorite, but I have some socks that I’m very attached to, also!

  • A February Baby Sweater from Knitter’s Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmermann. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-sweater-on-two-needles-february
It was early in my knitting journey, and when I learned that lace didn’t have to be worked over an even number of stitches.

  • Cowls and matching fingerless mitts are my favorite.

  • Socks of course!!!

  • Probably this fractal shawl: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/negative-space-sierpinski-kerchief
The pattern was really easy to memorize, and I was on the bus for three hours a day. It went by criminally quickly.

  • Socks -using Stephanie Pearl-McPhee guide to vanilla socks. Love reading the comments!

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/line-break

  • A cashmere hitchhiker!

  • My favourite sock yarn pattern is the Willow Cowl by Amelia Lyon.

  • The Ishneich shawl by Lucy Hague was a very challenging but wonderful knit. Far less complicated were a pair of cross-country ski socks I once did for my daughter, not a clue as to the pattern. I think just stated with a ribbed vanilla sock and extended it and measuring for increases as I knit the legs. Catherine Cooke

  • a HEART, an anatomically correct heart ! https://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter08/PATTheart.php
    the perfect wedding present!

but of course, also socks, fingerless mitts, baby booties, baby sweaters, shawls etc.!

  • Socks! I save all my sock yarn for socks Especially after finding what I call the “MDK toe” here for those who have toes that are longer than the big toe. I have found my handknit socks to somehow be warmer than the store bought wool socks…. I’m not above a nice shawl made out of fingering weight yarn though – it’s so nice to have a warm neck!

    • Forgot to say: I use a pattern I made myself, https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/56-stitch-vanilla-socks

And my Christmas time knitting is actually a pair of socks using Barnyard Knits in Mermaid Tales and I’ve had several people ogle the yarn! I’ve had to claim the socks for me!

  • So many shawls and sweaters I sock yarn. Joji’s starting point and through the loops fort tryon are much loved and used, but I could go on for hours.

I bought Coastal Elemental Affects copper for the main color. Need to swatch to see if I can get gauge. This is a new pattern.

  • Sweetheart Dress and shoe pattern for Bundle up Betty designed by Andre Dixon in a purple variegated colorway. (I had to look up how to spell variegated. Hope I got it right)

  • Favourite sock yarn project? Just finished Frog and Toad from https://www.frogandcast.com/frog-and-toad-home

  • Mini Christmas stockings

  • I love to make Imagined Landscapes gnomes with sock yarn. My favorite hat is also made from sock yarn – Paper Bag Hat by Laura Jones. It’s free on Ravelry.

  • If I can use the criterion of how many times I have knitted a pattern to decide if it is a favorite, then my favorite thing to knit with sock yarn has to be the Baktus shawl. I have knitted this shallow triangular shawl well over a dozen times, with different kinds of sock yarn. Different fiber blends, different color variations. Every single one has been gorgeous, drapey, snuggly, perfect.

  • About ten years ago, I sifted through my collection of leftover sock yarn and discovered that I had enough, in the correct colors, to knit a pair of socks based on one of my favorite James May jumpers. (It’s the one he’s talking about in this video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsqqy-VoLcg) It’s a plain-vanilla sock pattern, but knit in the same stripey pattern as James’ jumper. I call them my Strata of the Human Condition socks.

  • https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/breakaway-beanie by Lucy Neatby. Made it in a semi-solid green and blue with a speckled green/blue section. My daughter saw it knit up in River City Yarns in Edmonton, Alberta and wanted the exact same one (much prettier than the one for the pattern picture). She’d been so patient with my yarn shopping that I bought the yarn and made one for her :). Also, many plain socks. I heartily agree with the many others that let the yarn do the work, for just soothing sock knitting.

  • My favorite sock yarn project is the Pebble Beach Shawl by Helen Stewart. It’s such a fun knit and so wearable!

  • The first piece I was really proud of was this asymmetrical shawl made of sock yarn. I got it at a farm in CT when I met my spouse’s aunt and uncle for the first time. I think of that memory every time I wear it!

  • Mostly socks, but I did knit a sleeper for our new granddaughter.

  • overalls! yep, overalls. the name of the yarn was big girl pants so what else could i make? the pattern was from pickles oslo: omg overalls. really fun. i knit them through a heatwave in the summer of 2019. debuted them up at rhinebeck and then again at vkl the following winter before we knew what was coming… good to have something cozy to wear over the lockdown!

  • Socks!

  • My fingerless gloves which are knit in turtlepurl.com self-striping yarn called “Trenchcoat”. If you love Burberry colours like I do, you will love how this knits up.

  • Socks, socks, socks! I love any new pattern that gives me a challenge. My favorite non sock pattern to make with sock yarn is Joji’s Lightweight Hipster Shawl. Fun to knit and light to wear.

  • I make shawls with sock yarn. One of my favorites is the papillion, or the butterfly shawl.

  • Socks! I love using the wildest, most colorful yarns. My most recent favorite colorway was called Frog Prince. No need to worry about coordinating with anything, just joy to wear!

  • I’ve clearly been living under a rock because just last week I discovered the Hitchhiker scarf. Holy moley! It actually got me knitting again after months of being inexplicably stalled. Hello dear sock yarn! I’ve missed you so!

  • My current sock crush is the Every Day Sock by Rachel Boulahanis.
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/every-day-sock

    • Just added these to my queue. Thanks!

  • I think my favorite sock yarn project was this blanket, a wedding gift for a friend.
    https://ravel.me/catnurse/brq3

The pattern is Barn Raising Quilt

I dyed the yarn myself with food coloring, colors inspired by a forest of maple trees, poised to make a big vat of maple syrup!

  • A Sinister Catdigan! Also, socks…

  • my fav sock yarn item was my 1st knit shawl. Cadenza for fleece shawl by Petra Breakstone. I thought I knew what I was doing as a beginner knitter, laughing now when looking back…I knew very little. It was pretty and I added beads and enlarged it. Turned out lovely.

  • So many Musselburgh hats! Pattern from Ysolda Teague. A great way to use up my fingering/sock leftovers as gifts for family and friends.

  • I love a good sock pattern but this made the best hat! https://www.etsy.com/listing/1101162398/knitting-pattern-light-as-a-feather-hat

  • A scarf for Christmas. There’s no pattern but it’s easy to tell you. I bought red and green self-striping yarn, cast on 64 stitches, knit in the round until I ran out of yarn. I drew closed each end and sewed a jingle bell on each end. I’ve had it for years and still wear it every Christmas. I get a lot of nice comments on it every time I do!

  • A ruffled romper for my first grandchild due in Feb. So cute and machine washable too.

  • Such a difficult question for the last day of the year! While I love to knit sweaters and shawls with fingering yarn, I have come back to knitting more socks in the past three years or so, exploring toe-up and top-down, different heels, lace and cables….I usually have 3 pairs on the go at a time: one in my purse (just in case!), one at the treadmill (toes and heels done elsewhere) and one in my knitting basket. I have landed on a preferred approach that I can knit from memory (though I stray from it when a sock pattern captures my heart): toe-up (Turkish CO), M1 increases, a lovely gusset, wedge-shaped heel turn with German short rows, Partridge Stitch heel flap and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off–usually done two-at-a-time on a circular needle. My favourite socks, with a delicate cable, were knit this way, whilst I sat at my mother’s bedside a year ago at this time as she quietly slipped from this life.

  • I’m making a sweet Sophie scarf with sock yarn right now. So far it’s my favorite.

  • I see spring by Joji Locatelli. I love fingering weight sweaters as they are never too warm for socks Woodland Socks

  • I don’t do socks but use sock yarn for hats, scarves, shawls, baby things.

  • Reversible hat by Purl Soho. It was really fun to make and I love the pop of contrast colors. Was able to use leftover sock yarn.
    https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2021/08/30/reversible-hat-and-cowl-in-new-colors/

  • Got to be socks!

  • Socks. My favorite for multi-colored yarn is the slip stitch pattern from the Wanderlust field guide because it really shows off the yarn.

  • Little Christmas trees. I’ve got a forest growing in my house!

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/purled-christmas-tree

  • My favorite sock yarn project is the Amo Pullover by the Berroco design team.

  • Socks-I love to knit socks. How in the world did someone figure out how to turn the heel?

  • Socks! All day long. About three dozen pairs and counting. Love having bespoke feet.

  • This is a tough question to answer! It’s like asking which is my favorite dog (oh wait, I do have a favorite dog). I guess my current favorite are socks I knit while hiking the Routeburn Track in New Zealand. Lots of memories tied up in those socks!

  • I knit and crochet lots of little people and animals, so I’ve surely knit some of sock yarn: Hitty, from my own pattern, Fiona from Fiona Gamble’s doll and stuffed animal book, and especially their clothes. But my favorite pattern that I can nail down is https://www.yarnspirations.com/patons-sock-a-block-knit-socks/PAK0128-013792M.html, and the socks I knitted from it are my favorites, too. It helped that I made them on a river boat on the Danube. It would be a perfect pattern for those two skeins of yarn. On the ones I knitted, I reversed the order of yarns on the two socks, and a friend asked me if I’d done it by accident. Well, no.

  • Socks! I use a pattern called “BASIC SOCK” (fingering weight yarn) using either 60 or 64 stitches. I use a stretchy cast on and Kitchener the toes. Sometimes I use a patterned yarn for the body of the sock and plain yarn for toes, heels, cuffs. Or, I flip that! With the leftovers I make socks for toddlers/babies. They’re better than booties.

  • favorite thing I have made with sock yarn this year: I gathered several balls of leftovers and holding two different but somewhat coordinating strands together, made a great pair of socks using Summer Lee’s “Thicksgiving Cable Socks’ and I made them 10” tall so they are boot socks. I used different combinations for the cuff, cable, leg, heel, foot and toe (which matched the cuff). Nice and thick and warm and terrific-looking.

  • Socks are a go to project for me. I always have a pair on my needles regardless of whatever else I’m knitting. My favorite project this year was making a pair of watermelon socks for my daughter. I made a shortie version of The Crazy Sock Lady’s Sock Camp Picnic pattern and I used Biscotte Yarns color way Melon d’eau their Bis-Sock base. I have another skein of the same color way waiting patiently to be socks for me in the same pattern.

  • Gnomes lately — because all I have is scraps left from many years of my knitted socks.

  • Sockhead Hat

  • Socks. But also cowls, scarves, shawls, fingerless mitts, mittens, hats, and even sweaters, esp. if there is some stranded knitting involved. I get a lot of pleasure out knitting with sock yarn. Oh, and it is fun to marl if skinny needles are not your thing.

  • My favorite hat to make is Saratoga Beanie

  • I have made little girlfriend sweaters for my granddaughters out of sock yarn. The pattern amounts to 2 sleeves joined by a 6-8 inch-ish 2×2 ribbed piece for across the back. It keeps little ones arms warm without the bulk of a sweater. I found the pattern in one of the perpetual knitting calendars. Ravelry also had a girlfriend shrug pattern – out of print, but photos for a general idea.

  • Well, making a pair of socks with sock yarn IS kind of magical. I’ve not done it enough but know about first casting on all those tiny stitches, manipulating the DPNs round and round, watching the pattern unfold and best of all — slipping it over my toes after casting off. I knit one sock at a time but the joy of putting just one sock on my foot on has carried me through the second sock. Easy-peasy.

  • A new knitter (< 1 year), I’m just dipping my toes into the waters of fingering weight yarn. Making a hat for my 3-year-old. Don’t have the link to the pattern but it’s called Myers Light from Galt House of Yarn.

  • Socks! And mochimochi cats

  • Sock yarn bunny by Susan B. Anderson, Unicorn Books & Crafts. I knitted this little dude for my goddaughter as something to hold on to during her 7th (!) surgery. She insisted that the nurses allow Bunny into the OR with her; the nurses wrapped Bunny in a head cap & tucked him between her arm & torso. Nurses are the greatest! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/opal-sock-yarn-bunny

  • I made some Rye Light socks by Tin Can Knits! They are so toasty & warm!

  • I made Joji’s lightweight hipster and am SO in love with it!

  • I truly love making socks, but my favorite non-sock project is the Rikke Hat on Ravelry. I’ve made several as gifts and the one I’ve made for myself is my go to hat.

  • My current project is usually my favorite. I make scarves for my MIL every year. Th is Year, I’m late—I’ll finish it today. But I do love the one-skein pattern and the way it’s turning out with Dyelicious Yarn Carefree Tencel from Tempe Yarn’s Hand Dyed Yarn.
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fountain-hills

PS Thanks for posting Snippets—LOVE them! Can’t wait to watch and listen to the recommendations in today’s post.

  • Socks are still my favorite thing to knit from sock yarn. Those socks keep my feet so comfy here in Minnesota winters.

  • Socks, using the cuff down and stitch patterns from MDK’s Wanderlust. I have multiple requests for them from friends and family.

  • I love knitting socks, but my favorite thing ever was a colorwork hat with trees from a pattern I created. The trees are knitted with a hand-dyed yarn in greens with some oranges and golds, and the background is a silvery, misty gray. It won fourth place at our county fair for small items.

  • Socks! Lots of socks, but still never enough socks. My go to pattern is Ann Budd’s 7 stitch basic sock pattern. Yarn leftovers are (slowly) being turned into squares for a Barn Raising quilt.

  • Socks! I wear handmade socks all the time.

  • My favorite thing to knit with sock yarn was a pair of socks, of course. But very special socks knit, as it so happens, out of Barnyard Knits sock yarn in the Walk in the Woods color way, for my son to wear at his wedding. They looked dynamite with his classic tux as he and his wife to be stood near the Pigeon Point Lighthouse overlooking the Pacific Ocean reciting their vows. Those were some special socks!! (Oh, and I used a pattern out of the MDK Field Guide Wanderlust!)

  • This is a hard question to answer! Mostly I’ve made shawls from sock yarn, and have both of Jan Lucas’s sock yarn books. But of all the shawls I’ve knited, my favorite is probably Enchanted Tree shawl https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/enchanted-tree-shawl, with a narrow satin ribbon strung through the eyelets at the edge of the stocking knit body, and tied in a bow at the point.

And it’s great for more advanced knitters as you can easily riff off of the various variations that are offered. And for those who are old school the will mail you a pattern in nice stiff card stock!

  • My favourite sock-yarn-knit was one of my designs. Called “Six by Six” (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/six-by-six-2), it’s kind of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” pattern, where you can mix and match the six stitch patterns any way you like. What really makes it my favourite is the fun we had during the knitalong hosted by Hands On Knitting Center.

Not so thick that it seems like a stocking cap, and easily fits into the diaper bag. Pattern? Um? 2X2 rib all the way…cuff the bottom the first few weeks, then un-cuff as baby grows. Knit in the round.

  • This would be my favorite make-me-relax sock pattern – designer Kate Atherley’s Basic Ribbed Socks. A top-down basic but I do them 2-at-a-time on size 1 circular needle and I can almost do them in my sleep.

Those socks ended up being a great fit for me, and I loved the yarn I selected. They are my fave socks to this day, about 25 years later.

  • Socks! I always have socks on my flex-tips

  • My current favorite thing made from sock yarn is my “Cheat Your Tweed” (by Hinterm Stein on Ravelry) jacket. I used three strands throughout in deep blues, greys both variegated and kettle-dye, and when I was afraid of running out before the sleeves were done, swapping out one of the blue and grey varigated with a light fingering blue and a lace weight grey. I made it a bit A-line and my preferred length. It is a comforting hug, in some ways calming like a weighted blanket.

  • My fav is Isabell Kramer’s SSP SHAWL. mosaic knitting is my new jam.

  • My favorite thing I’ve made with sock yarn? Other than my favorite socks, of course. I weave with it! I warp up the loom with Colrain Lace (OMG such wonderful stuff!) and use the precious sock yarn as weft. Usually an undulating twill.

  • I loved knitting The Shift by Andrea Mowry!

    https://ravel.me/the-shift

  • Magic heel socks by the autumn acorn

  • My most challenging project with sock yarn was a pattern for Civil War socks. Rough-spun wool yarn in three colors and a pattern for soldiers from Chester County PA. Knitters used different designs on the socks which helped to identify bodies on the battle ground. My socks did not match when completed and I had to redo one after I asked the intended recipient to try on each for sizing. I love sock yarn but the Civil War socks are the most memorable.

  • I like fingerless mitts made with sock yarn. And the favorite use was to make ‘bitty’ bunnies.

  • I like making fingerless mitts. Not as bulky as other weights, and as warm as I need them to be. I generally just make my own vanilla pattern!

  • Currently working on the Botanic Shawl by Stephen West. It’s fairly mindless knitting so I can just relax and watch the colors shift as I knit. And I always have a couple pairs of socks in various stages of progress in little cotton bags that tuck into my purse in case the doctor runs late, lunch turns into a long chat, etc.

  • I made the Musselburgh hat by Ysolda and it’s just perfect for a skein of fingering!

    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fluxy

  • My favorite was Susan b Anderson color block socks

  • It has been so far the down home shawl, with dropped stitches. I love it!

  • I confess, without hesitation, to never having made a sock, let alone two. I made a nice shawl out of a large pile of sock yarn, Andrea Mowry fade-style, with sweet tiny wool poms on the corners that remind me of the little cotton poms on ankle socks in the late 70s/early 80s.

  • I actually love sweaters made in sock yard. Just the perfect weight for me!!

  • Gnomes! Any of the patterns from Sarah Schira’s Imagined Landscapes.

  • My most recent favorite thing with sock yarn is the Sofie scarf pattern, I’m on my second one in a little over a week. Very easy and quick, especially for knitting and watching my favorite shows!

  • Simple seed stitch baby hats!

  • Novice here, only knitting for about 2.5 years and haven’t used sock weight yet. I do have plenty in my stash for… sock projects!

  • My favorite thing to do with sock yarn is buy it! I have made 1 pair of socks for my husband and one Uneek sock that I made twice and took apart 3 times. My favorite thing might be the Stephen West large honeycomb shawl if I ever figure out how to get past the very beginning…

    https://www.berroco.com/sites/default/files/downloads/patterns/Berroco-Minutia22.pdf

  • Sock yarn baby surprise jacket! So fun. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-surprise-jacket

  • Socks on a Plane are easy and good for solid or variegated yarn
    https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/socks-on-a-plane

  • Socks! Or fingerless mitts

  • I confess, I haven’t used sock yarn in sixty-four years. I was 18. That’s when I started knitting, and my first knitting project(s)—four pairs of argyle socks. No one told me it was supposed to be hard, so I bought a pattern and supplies and forged ahead. They came out great. My brothers wore them proudly. I guess I’ll have to try Barnyard Fibers sock yarn in 2023 so I can come full circle.

  • Hats. Brainless knitting and the yarn does all the work.

  • I had a lot of fun with the “Bloomsters” pattern for socks.

  • My most favorite project was the 2021 Stephen West MKAL Shawlography. It was challenging, the yarn I used (Emma’s Yarn) was so soft and I managed to actually finish it! The best thing of all is that I gifted the shawl to my BFF who is battling cancer. It was my way of hugging her as she goes through all the treatments and side effects.

  • Shawls

  • Although it took like 4 years for hubs to get his cashmere socks for his 50th birthday (yep he was at least 54) they were his favorite gift ever. Just the Ann Norling pattern, EZ, PEEZY

  • Best road trip sockyarn knitting evar, the Citron shawl!

  • I am just about “socked” out. For Christmas I made a neck warmer for my DIL. She and my son wear shorts and tee shirts in the winter here. With the latest cold front with the wind, I imagine she will find it easy to slip it on walking from her car to her office. It was the perfect weight for her.

  • My favorite thing to make with sock yarn is socks…so many, it’s hard to choose, but a favorite is Monkey Socks by Cookie A: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/monkey-socks

  • I love the knitted linen stitch! Everyone thinks it’s woven and Churchmouse’s Koigu Linen Stitch Scarf is a great way to showcase this stitch. It is knitted length-wise and you create the fringe as you go. Use 2 – 3 colorways of variegated yarn and you are on your way to a fantastic garment. https://www.churchmouseyarns.com/collections/churchmouse-patterns-scarves-wraps/products/koigu-linen-stitch-scarf-patt

  • Ooo, favorite sock yarn project? Every one I do is my new favorite! One I really enjoyed this fall was the Sharon Air MKAL from Casapinka. I don’t really get in to the backstory with Sharon, but I really enjoyed the pattern. Simple enough for tv or other distracted knitting: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sharon-air

Then I started Winter Wonderland MKAL by Kay Hopkins. I’m not done (only half way through), as I had gift knitting to do and that took priority. I just picked it up again. It’s a fun knit! Also simple enough for tv or distracted knitting: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/winter-wonderland-mkal

  • My favorite sock yarn knit is a tubular cowl – so warm and cushy. I knit it long enough to pull it up like a hood and still cover my neck. Love it.

  • I have to admit it’s socks. All kinds of socks.

  • I made a mobius cowl with two colors of sock yarn (aqua and deep purple) that striped all the way around with no beginning in sight. I used Kat Bhordi’s mobius cast on and knit until I ran out of yarn, iirc.

  • My favourite thing I’ve made with sock yarn has to be my Sail Shawl. But sock yarn is always my favourite to knit with.

  • Besides socks, I love to make shawls with sock yarn.

    • Love making Tin Can Knits Barley hats with two strands of sock. Fun, quick and simple.

  • I love the Willow Cowl. The photo on the pattern doesn’t do it justice. I made one with Claudia hand paints and it striped at the bottom then pooled near the top. This cowl starts out wider a the bottom, then narrows at the neck.

  • Summary Shawl by Renate (it’s on Ravelry!). Made with Elevate Fibers sock yarn. Scrumptious!

  • My favorite sock yarn project is a little wall hanging I made with some malabrigo varigated yarn. It’s a wall hanging, free form, so no pattern. But the malabrigo colors are a stunning gold/yellow/brown/red mix. I strung it on a piece of copper wire.

  • One & Done Shawl by Casapinka

  • I like to make shawls with sock yarn; here is a favorite pattern for one I made for a woman living in Florida:

Lightweight Raglan Pullover from Purl Soho

  • Socks! Kate atherly’s basic socks

  • Love knitting socks, but I think my favorite item knit with fingering yarn is my Soph vest by Lesley Anne Robinson.

  • Way back in 2020, I knit Jennifer Steingass’ Hinterland sweater pattern (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hinterland-5) with Sweet Georgia Yarns Tough Love Sock and Malabrigo’s Mechita. It seemed to take forever, but the effort using smaller needles was worth it!

  • Socks – I just make them up as I go along, but always top down, with a heel flap and gusset

  • Fav thing? Socks! I’ve always used the Susan B. Anderson pattern/not-pattern and it always turns out. Sure there are other top-down ones but this has always been a winner for me. http://susanbanderson.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-i-make-socks.html

  • Aside from socks I have made clothing for Barbie dolls out of sock yarn. Sorry it has been a while and I don’t have a pattern of late. Happy new year!

  • Socks, lots of socks.

  • I have used sock yarn to make a variety of fun gnome patterns from Imagined Landscapes!

  • `My favorite thing to knit is sweaters and I love how comfortable sock yarn sweaters are to wear. A favorite is “Not A Boring Sweater”. Lots of cables in the yoke and ribbing at sleeve edge and hem.

  • My favorite make with sock yarn is still in progress, but I am utterly in love with my mitered square sock yarn blanket. I work on it in fits and spurts, but always reminds me of not only the projects that the yarn ends came from, but of the scrappy handmade blankets my grandmother had at home before she passed. Lots of good memories.

  • Love sock yarn for shawls and sweaters — especially marling and holding double to create painterly effects.

  • Joni’s Light WeightHipster

  • One year at Maryland sheep and wool, I noticed some sock yarn.. just a few skeins on the back of one booth… hand dyed purples, pinks, greens…this is my favorite shawl and I almost missed seeing the yarn.

  • A shawl of course but this is the year I finally tackle the SOCK!!

  • I am working on a Sockhead hat. Pattern is by Kelly MClure.

  • My Drachenfels scarf, made with a gradient set plus extra yarn so I started freestyling with colors. It’s big and sumptuous and I love it! Close second: my Musselbergh hat made with bits and pieces from my stash, and the yarn held double.

  • I have made so many things with sock yarn, but nothing beats that first sock feeling. For me it was the Monkey sock by Cookie A. I was hooked. I loved the speedy gratification of an FO. https://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTmonkey.html

  • Whorl by Cassandra Lyons: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/whorl-2 I used a gifted skein of poems sock yarn. 7 plus years later it’s still my go-to layer, Fall through Spring! Wonderfully light, soft, and just the right amount of added warmth.

  • My favorite thing I’ve made with sock yarn is All. The. Socks. Especially plain, ordinary, stockinette stitch socks with a flap and gusset heel, knit from the top down. Autopilot knitting at its best!

  • Just socks
