Dear Ann:
NO. I just can’t.
No.
The rumor on the tweety is that Rowan is discontinuing Rowan Denim.
Trying to talk myself down right now. Listen, I don’t like the current version. I suspect they changed suppliers a few years ago. I like the older, crunchier, whiter-cored version. I stockpiled a fair amount. I will survive. I will buy it offa all the people who bought it and decided they couldn’t deal with the, ahem, crispness of hand.
But no. Just no.
Yours incoherently,
Kay
Having finally knit 2 denim sweaters, and just visited England, I was lusting after MORE DENIM. It was not in stock at any of the C&H retailers I visited. But this news is too awful!!
Silver lining: you win the Best Titled Post of the Year for this one.
PS Maybe they was april foolin’ ya.Oh Rowan, you pranksters.
XOX
I had hoped the rumor was just that. I’m a bit shocked myself!!
Maybe it’s time to start that MD yarn line.
You’re back!
I have a couple of sweaters worth, and I don’t knit very fast, and surely now it will go on sale and I can stock up, but this will also mean no new patterns, so we’ll have to make do with the hundred fine existing patterns… Oh, it is not a good thing! (Wasn’t 2013 going to be the year of the denim gansey?)
Unspeakable. I find this to be a shocking disloyalty on the part of Rowan. A failure to fade. A shunning of the shrinking. A downright despicable disrespect for the very yarn that made Rowan Rowan! Scurrilous! Weak! Lame!
PS What is Eddie Redmayne supposed to do with himself now?
NO!
I have a love/hate thing going on with this yarn. Craving the end product does not make the WIP go faster.
Glad to hear from you. I was a bit sassy on recent comments, from missing your posts.
There are people who went through this sort of upheaval when Hostess shut down the Twinkie, honey. Just horde the denim. Get it all.
Also write sonnets, writing sonnets always helps.
How do I explain to my bewildered husband that the 2 shelves full of denim yarn are no longer enough? Of course you’re right, the new stuff is crap, but still.
Kay, if I run across any I’ll get it for you!
It’s gone? I haven’t even gotten around to trying it yet. I’ve never even used it….
I hope it is wrong. Even when I don’t knit with a yarn myself, it just feels sad when a yarn goes away. Like extinction.
Oh
Em
Geeeeee
What I can say is, Africa has a small cottage industry and history of indigo dyeing. Perhaps we can get a new indigo authenticness happening. But. What. What, what, what.
Truly a sad day, and I think they have some answering to do to you.
Never fear, Kay!
I’ve got 20 untouched skeins of #225 Nashville and 40 untouched skeins of #229 Memphis in my stash, purchased before I decided that I’m not fond of knitting with 100% cotton yarn. I’ve had it for probably 8 years, so, hopefully, it’s the old version that you like. Just let me know when your supply reaches a critical level, and the Rowan Denim can come live at your home rather than loll around in a yarn bin at mine.

Ack, how can one simply discontinue a legend? So final, so wrong. But please, Mary G in Texas, consider us other poor souls with no RD stash, who lust after your 20 balls of #225 Nashville! I foresee the creation of a new Ravelry group, Black Market Rowan Denim, a clandestine meeting place for the well-stocked and the desperate…

Hm, this really makes me wish I was sitting on a stockpile so I could price-gouge vulnerable knitters! Luckily for my conscience I’m not a big denim fan.
now I wish I had knit something with it too! :~{
now I wish I had knit something with it too! :~{
PS It goes without saying that it is a DISGRACE to discontinue a yarn that has shades named Tennessee, Nashville, and Memphis.
I’ll keep you in my thoughts during this time of grief.
I’ll keep you in my thoughts during this time of grief.
Say it ain’t so!
WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???
I bought a whole Rowan book on the Rowan Denim! Oh my gosh. I can’t even. What a betrayal.
I don’t believe this. First the tweed now the denim.
Shucks! I made my beautiful nephew a Moderne Log Cabin baby blanket out of this. In the future, I had hoped to make him a goin’ off to college blanket out of the same. I am also suffering from yarn stash envy of Mary G in Texas
Kay, if I run across any I’ll get it for you!
I second gretcheng’s idea of a Black Market Rowan Denim group on Ravelry!

First they discontinue Calmer, now Denim? What next, Rowan?
I think we just need to bombard their websites with complaints about it. I’m down to 4 or 6 balls of it at home I think. That said, first they got rid of the black denim, now this, you may just start hating them always!
Not sure what the rav “for sale or trade” page of this looks like, but it will be getting hot now!
Aw, c’mon Kay, you know you want to. Denim is your frieeennd…..
LoveDiane
Have you written to/e-mailed Rowan to get the story straight from the horse’s mouth? And, in doing so, perhaps letting them know you’re a best-selling knitting writer and co-author of a well-read knitting blog?
And, if worst comes to worst, maybe you should start an online petition. It may convince Rowan to keep the Denim yarn, or convince a competitor to come out with an indentical product!
BTW, I think that once this Rowan Denim is discontinued, it will be replaced by their “next generation” denim. And anyway, Kay, you talk about “carpe denim”, which i think means ” seize the denim”. if you really didn’t want it, then its funny to talk about seizing it, no? quite a slip, Dr. Freud… 🙂
LoveDiane.
I only have one small item made from Rowan denim: a pillowcase for a travel-size pillow. I wasn’t sure I was a denim yarn believer, but it’s true that it only gets better and softer with age.
Good luck to you!
SAY IT AIN’T SO!
How can they even think of doing this? There are books and patterns dedicated to this yarn. And you have been their biggest fan…promoting this yarn world-wide. They owe you an apology and a shipment of what they have left.
I thought the powers that be at Rowan were nuts when they discontinued Calmer, and I quickly snatched up two sweaters worth of that yarn. Never got to try the denim, but there is an Alice Starmore (?) gansey done in it that I have always wanted to make.
My life is over…
Oh noooooo!
Gasp, this can’t be true? I feel so blue. Off to shop for some before it’s gone. Maybe if we all do that there’ll be such a rush on it that they’ll change their minds.
