My intent was simple: I wanted to make a pair of Granny Square Crocs, inspired by Tashy of Mamma Stitches, whose cool Crocs went viral last summer. They weren’t slippers or socks and I can wear them outside. With just a few granny squares, a needle, and patience, simple plastic clogs transform into a stylish, wearable statement—even if I’m just going to the bodega!

Granny squares were my introduction to crochet. I first used Noro, so I knew I wanted to use variegated yarns, which led me to try Lola Bean’s Pinto Bean DK. I initially planned to use Audrey II alone, but realized that variegated yarns don’t behave like ombré or self-striping yarns. Instead of color pooling, each double crochet cluster held multiple colors, making the granny square pattern disappear.

How do I make these squares cool again? I embraced what defines a granny square: alternating colors. I introduced El Bosque, and the squares came back to life—visible holes, distinct rows, and a recognizable pattern. Each different swatch revealed unique personalities, but I found I preferred a solid border. The solid color allowed the variegated to breathe without competing.

Checking my four-row square against the Croc, I found it stretched too much. Adding another row made it too large, so I compromised with a round of half-double crochet for better coverage. This allowed the square to curve around the toe without excessive stretching.

Instead of sewing like Tashy, I crocheted the pieces together, using Audrey II as a border accent. To create a crisp outline, I crocheted only through the top loop of the top piece and bottom loop of the bottom piece. The largest square edge needed gathering to fit it along the small triangle edge, so I crocheted two square stitches together every third stitch, forming a perfect curve.

For attachment, I marked stitch holes along the dotted edges with a pen ½” apart (every 5 dots on the Croc) then pre-punched them with an awl. Sewing with El Bosque, I secured the patches using the stitchholes. I made sure to leave a 3” tail at the beginning.

I’d insert my needle, grab a stitch, then insert it back into the same stitch hole. Once you return to the starting point, tie off the working yarn to the tail with a double knot.

My Granny Square Crocs are ready to rock with hand-knit socks to the bodega.
