Yarns to Love
Don’t Forget the Yarn
Don’t let the special homewares and self-care wonderfulness in this year’s Holiday Shop fool ya: we didn’t forget that knitters love yarn.
Holiday time is an excellent moment to remind someone who loves you that you’ve had your eye on a special yarn or bundle.
Here’s a short list, suitable for scribbling on a post-it and sticking it on the fridge or rear-view mirror, to make life easy for that Person Who Loves You a Lot.
There’s Always Room for Dessert Sock Yarn
The holiday shop has a brand-new yarn from our Nashville neighbor, Camellia Fiber Company: White Tweed Sock.
Silbia Ro’s exquisite yarns are so subtle, so rare. This sock/fingering weight yarn puts snowflakes into your knitting, whether it’s a pair of snow-flecked socks or the exquisite one-skein shawl patterns by Françoise Danoy of Aroha Knits, Māwhitiwhiti and Whatu.
Barnyard Knits Sock/Fingering is one of the most popular yarns we carry, so we’re delighted to bring in a collection of new colors, just in time for the holidays.
This yarn takes our breath away, with astonishing depth of color and surprises— it’s art from a dyepot.
Sock patterns appear in MDK Field Guide No. 11: Wanderlust, available in both digital and print editions.
Bundle Up for the Holidays
What a knitter most loves to see: a bountiful yarn bundle with their name on it. We’ve got ’em!
Just for the holidays, we’ve got a new colorway for the beloved Kiki Mariko Rug Kit: Grellow!
When we saw Cristina’s warm, rich take on the Kiki Mariko felted rug, we knew we had to bring in the colors to bundle-ize it. The Kiki Mariko is one of the most joyful knits ever devised, and the finished rug brings a dash of Scandinavian style to any home.
Cecelia Campochiaro’s Color Explosion Throw is a super fast joy ride to color heaven. One MDK reader described knitting it as “ridiculously fun”—and that’s the truth. Easy to memorize + constant color changes = our idea of bliss.
We’ve sold out of the kits more than once since the launch of MDK Field Guide No. 19. Now, thanks to our Felted Tweed-slinging friends at Rowan, we’ve got them back in stock for the holidays. A free download of the Field Guide is included with each Color Explosion Throw bundle, so you can just grab your needles and go. And it’s a great deal, at 10 percent off the single-ball price.
Nobody Puts Kaffe in the Corner
We’ve also stocked up on coveted Kaffe Fassett bundles. There is something about this master colorist’s exuberant, artful palettes that makes them perfect for holiday giving.

And here’s the bright colorway.
Other bundles of joy to check out: Felted Tweed Bundle of Ten, in two colorways; Village Scarf Kit; and Cityscape Scarf Kit.
Pro tip: If you find it challenging to pick 11 colors that “go together” for your own Color Explosion Throw, any one of Kaffe’s bundles would make a fantastic alternative colorway. See Kay’s post on how she is combining a Kites Throw Kit with a few other shades of Felted Tweed she had in her (ahem) collection, to make a stunning version of the Color Explosion Throw. (Kay is knitting this thing in real time over on Instagram, if you want the marl-by-marl coverage. And Cristina is making a cushion version from her Bright Wrap leftovers—one bundle goes a loooooong way.)
1) Find and fill in post-its (approx. 8″x10″).
2) Stick subtly around house: fridge, mirrors, kitchen cabinets, coffeemaker, front door, back door, bureau drawers, coat pockets…hmmm, that should cover it nicely. More suggestions always welcome!
3) Check under the tree at regular intervals.
I love holiday planning! Thanks, Kay and Ann, for making it so easy!
Don’t forget on the steering wheel in the car! Tool shed?
If you need one sticky note for every nice thing, you’ll definitely need a lot of places….
The yarns you carry, the projects, the whole ambiance and obvious great goals of your business are almost overwhelming. I end up reading each post wanting to buy one of everything, just to bring your joy into my own house. Creative kudos to you all.
