Fingerless Mitts for My Entire Body
Dear Kay,
I have been enraptured by Hazel Knits Artisan Sock yarn from the moment we discovered it. It was one of the first yarns we brought into The Shop, as a batch of yarn for Ann Weaver’s Squad Mitts.
I had a swell time making my Squad Mitts, and the leftovers have had a place of honor on my desk in the Pile of Greatness. Now, after many weeks of contemplation, I’ve hit upon the idea for a supersized, giant fingerless mitt—what many people might call a pullover. A sweater. Whatever!
Four 400-yard skeins of fingering weight yarn is plenty for a pullover (minus a bit for the Squad Mitts, of course). So I dug out my pattern for Carol Feller’s Carpino pullover, which I made with glee a few years ago and have worn like crazy. The ventilated front is just the thing, I tell you.
This new Carpino will pay tribute to the Squad Mitts, and is shaping up to be one of my all-time favorite mashups of yarn and pattern.
One fascinating discovery: my dark gray yarn has blue in it. I never noticed it before.
I’m itching to start the Terrywinkle, the pale lavender. Wendee Shulsen, who created this yarn, writes: “I just never know when inspiration for a color will strike. Often I am struck by the natural beauty of my surroundings, but sometimes I even find inspiration in a friend’s closet. Terrywinkle is a light periwinkle that skews slightly towards purple and was inspired by my friend Terry’s perfectly colored sweater.”
Perfect.
Love,
Ann
Ah…the Pile of Greatness. I am so stealing this phrase…I have piles of greatness scattered everywhere! Thanks, Ann!
A ventilated sweater is just what a woman of a certain age needs in central Virginia. What will you wear under it? My fingering solids are dedicated to another Ann Weaver design, the Rothko Sweater…)
What a beautiful sweater! Makes me want to drop the 3 sweaters currently on the needle, order yarn, and cast on.
Ha ha, same here! Why finish a sweater when I could start another one?
I love this!
I love the colors and the texture. Another project for my queue!
What a great idea for sock yarn. The sweater is lovely and a style which will look great on you, Ann. Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Stunning!
There’s no denying that it’s fingerless! C’mon Terrywinkle!
This is not just a little bit nice!
Carpino has been on my favorites list since it first came out. I’ve only not purchased it yet because I’ve got a pattern stash to match my SABLE – a PABLE!
Gorgeous. I need to go fav that pattern in ravelry. Thanks!!!
A ventilated sweater – now THAT is an idea I haven’t come across before! Yarn from this year’s sweater has also become a scarf – all I need to add is a hat and some mittens for a complete ensemble.
The blue in the grey is one of the first things I fell in love with on my mitts.
Well done! I used three of the leftovers from my Squad Mitts to make Veera Valimaki’s Color Affection Shawl. Lots of fun! And yes, I was surprised to notice the light blue in the charcoal gray as well.
“Four 400-yard skeins of fingering weight yarn is plenty for a pullover.” I’ve never knit a pullover with yarn finer than DK, so I hadn’t thought about this. You are *such* an enaler!
