Editors’ note: The giveaway has happened—congratulations to Debra M. of Riverbank, California! We leave this post up simply because we love this Ninepatch Blanket Kit and hope you’ll take a minute to see what it’s all about.

Dear all who are trying to keep warm,

To celebrate the Fringe and Friends Log Cabin Make-along, we’re doing that thing we love to do: a giveaway!

What better way to get you started on your own log cabin blanket than a ginormous kit of eight winter-busting, cheer-filled, subtly heathered shades?

This is our Ninepatch Blanket Kit. Fifteen skeins of one of our favorite yarns, Berroco Ultra Alpaca.

As the “bomb cyclone” makes its way north, we’re thinking a lot about knitting and warmth and the natural fibers that are so brilliant at keeping us warm. This Ultra Alpaca is 50% ultra fine alpaca and 50% Peruvian wool. Incredible how these fibers conspire to catch the warmth and insulate us. I’ve been wearing my Laurel pullover made with this yarn, and it’s getting me through 9° weather in Nashville.

We’ll include a copy of Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide No. 4: Log Cabin—that’s where Kay’s glorious pattern, Ninepatch Blanket, appears.

To enter, two steps:

  1. Sign up for our Saturday morning newsletter, Snippets. (The sign-up box is at the bottom of this page. Apologies for the long scroll down there!) This weekly digest has become the greatest way to see our entire week’s batch of articles and features. It also is the place where we tend to announce special offerings and new stuff. We have a ton of fun ahead for the Shop, so if you want to be in the know, Snippets is the ticket. (If you’ve already subscribed, no worries—you’re good for this giveaway.)
  2. Leave a comment, letting us know whether you’ve ever done log cabin knitting before. And, if you have, what has been your favorite log cabin project?

Deadline for entries is 11:59 pm Pacific time, Sunday, January 7. The winner will be notified by via email.

Blankets, y’all! Blankets are what will get us through!

Love,

Ann

  • I’ve never done a log cabin blanket. Looks like fun!

  • I’m all psyched up to knit my first log cabin as part of the log cabin knitalong, but I can’t decide what to make! I’ve just reread the log cabin section of your first book, and I want to make them all…. Now I’m about to read your field guide and I’ve got an awful feeling I’ll just want to knit all those projects as well.. Plus I’ve been perusing the Instagram postings, and there are even more ideas there! All I do know is that I have lots of stash waiting to be log cabinned, so maybe I’ll plan for a dishcloth and see if it grows into a blanket.

  • I have not ever attempted a log cabin, but I am facinated by all the imaginative uses for the pattern!

  • I’ve never done any lag cabin knitting but would like to try.

  • I’ve made a log cabin quilt for my daughter, but the dishcloth that i’m currently knitting is my first log cabin knitting project.

  • I have never tried log cabin knitting before-never a better time to try then when it is -6 degrees in Michigan 🙂

  • Have not tried this pattern but would love to try.

  • I have made 2 Fussy Cuts blankets. The firsttook 3 years of “Walking Dead”, “Braking Bad” and road trips. The second a 9 month marathon for a gift for my daughter. My Fussy Cuts is warm and also weighty enough to get the “heavy blanket” effect. My daughter’s boyfriend and cat have taken over her blanket. And yet, I’m ready for another go, (after I make myself a sweater, because I can’t wear the Stopover to work everyday.) I thought it would be the Station Wagon Blanket but I love these colors.

  • New knitter, working my way through the dishcloths in the Field Guide!

  • What fun! My favorite, and only, log cabin was a baby blanket donated to the Linus Project.

  • I made a few log cabin quilts for friends’ babies before I started knitting, which might be why I took to log cabin dishcloths. Those were a favorite for me because as a new knitter I learned how to pick up stitches and use decreases to make the corner squares in the nine patch!

  • This is a great chance to get that log cabin project on the needles. One of my roadblocks is picking the appropriate colors for such a big project and this kit takes care of that concern beautifully.

  • I didn’t EVEN KNOW about log cabin knitting but I am intrigued and I am always looking for ways to stay warm in Canada!!

  • I have done several log cabin blankets, most recently a big squishy full size one. I think my favorite is the one I made my niece. I did 6 colorful log cabin blocks then gave them all white borders and joined them with a 3 need bind off. It’s a happy blanket!

  • Yes I have! Moderne Baby Blanket was my second log cabin project!

  • I have not done a log cabin design before but would love to do one. And I love berrocco yarn!

  • I need this blanket! I have Field Guide #4 and the kit to knit the dishcloths but have not gotten started. So thus instead of beginning with something small and manageable, I should definitely move to huge and overwhelming! Yes! Go big!

  • Made a log cabin bathmat from your first book. Still using it after ten years!

  • I’ve never done log cabin knitting but I would love to give it a try. What an awesome giveaway!

  • I’m also new to Log Cabin Knitting though I have done something similar. Would yo have a try st it!!

  • I am on my third log cabin blanket, free form with large blocks of color. One of my fav things to knit.

  • I have never done a log cabin blanket before. In fact the only blanket I have ever done I gave away. This looks like a super fun knit!!

  • I’ve log cabined once. Baby blanket for a friend. I’ve been giving SERIOUS thought to an adult sized one lately since the wind sweeping across the plains here in Oklahoma has been downright frigid.

  • Field Guide No. 4 has been my introduction to log cabin knitting and I love it! I’ve started a KAL project, just playing with it for now.

  • I made the Moderne Log Cabin Blanket

  • I have made several log cabins. 6 from the mason/dixon book peach,turq.,white,yellow. Another in shades of brown but it had different size stripes for each section. Another mitered squares 21 sts. Pastels purple, lt green, white, lt blue, lt turq. 140 squares. And several others I gave as gifts. I never get tired of log cabin. I would turn the winning yarn into a warm hug. Its -5 high 9 to day in Michigan. Live it! Nothing to do but knit knit knit…..

  • I’ve not knit a log cabin blanket, but we are getting a puppy and I thought I could make a blanket for snuggling on the couch with him!

  • I made a baby blanket with a log cabin border around a bigger rectangle and I’m currently binding off a log cabin throw.

  • I have never made a knitted log cabin
I really want to try it.

  • You could use a dk or sock weight wool to keep the chill off when the air is on.

  • I am working on my first log cabin project – the Sommerfeld Shawl – and am loving it, except for problem of picking the correct colors. The kit would be perfect because you’ve already done the hard part of picking them out!!

  • Can’t wait to try a new adventure

  • So fun! I have done a few log cabin things, and of them the two blankets have been the most fun. The first was a stash busting that resulted in the thickest, brightest blanket, and the last a freestyle for my in-laws using some handspun from their son and some local farm yarns. I liked the randomness of it. I am very intrigued by this 9 patch style, haven’t tried that yet!

  • I have used y’all’s log cabin techniques to crochet three baby blankets, all of which are still being dragged around by the recipients. I’m now crocheting a (really weird, sort of post-modern) log cabin afghan for my daughter’s apartment. I may knit one for myself next…I get cold, too!

  • My first knitted blanket was a log cabin based on the recipe in the second(?) big Modern Daily book. I am swatching for my next log cabin project – that Ultra Alpaca looks scrummy. Thank you so much for turning a corner with the blog and the business, it has been such fun following along! 🙂

  • I was expecting my first grandchild when your first book came out and I enthusiastically started a baby log cabin blanket. It didn’t turn out well , now years later I’m excited about trying this technique again!

  • I started a log cabin scrappy blanket, but I haven’t completed it yet. Perhaps this will be the year. 🙂

  • Newbie to log cabin knitting but would be very excited to make my first!

  • LOVE log cabin knitting. My favorite project was a set of trivets and coasters made for my about-to-be-daughter-in-law. Rich brown, warm mustard, tomatoey red, lettuce green – all felted and pretty on the table. Truthfully, maybe not that great – but the results (grandkids) are!!!!! This prize will make a great blanket for grand-daughter Matilda.

  • I have never done log cabin knitting before, but have made a log cabin quilt with fabric. I am anxious to try this with knitting. Thank you.

  • I haven’t knit a log cabin but have quilted a few. This would be a wonderful winter project.

  • I’ve made a log cabin blanket before but i wasn’t in love with the final product because of the colors I chose. Sure would be nice to have this curated collection of yarn in preselected colorways that would look fabulous together!

  • I have never done the log cabin blanket. I actually have made many blankets and love to do so. This would be a delightful new experience for me. Loving the colors and the challenge.

  • I have knit 4 car size log cabin type blankets for the grandkids. Perfect projects to just enjoy knitting!

  • I’ve done log cabin quilting but not knitting 🙂

  • I’ve never made a log cabin in knit form but I think I might have in quilt piece when I was little? The posts have been fantastic and inspiring.

  • I’m doing a log cabin project right now! It is for the fringe association knitalong. I love ultra alpaca… I need a warmer sweater stat!

  • Oh my! What a beautiful pile of yarn. I am waiting for my Field Guide #4 to arrive (on its way) at which point I will “plunge” into log cabin blanket knitting. The good thing about waiting is that I am able to finish a project! One of the best parts of receiving such a gift as this glorious pile of yarn: it would greatly help me in my dithering about colour! And just such a blanket will be much appreciated as I watch the latest snowstorm blow sideways through our town (Atlantic Canada).

  • I’ve never made a log cabin blanket before.

  • I’m already subscribed to snippets but I’ve have done some log cabin knitting I’ve made two modern log cabin baby blankets and I’ve made one court house steps baby blanket.

      Kelly from Gainesville, Florida

  • My favorite was the Moderne Log Cabin baby blanket I knit for my great-granddaughter 4 years ago.

    • I have never done any log cabin knitting but it looks fun.

  • I am going to join the log cabin knitalong. I’m already working on the nine patch pattern as a wedding gift. Already get all of your emails and love them all. Put me in the drawing. I love to win!❤️

  • A little shameless set promotion…I designed a log cabin wrap a few years ago called Cabin In the Woods (on Ravelry). I loved making that, and whenever I look through my copy of Modern Daily Knitting it has me wanting to do more.
    Tempe Croke

    • “Self-promotion”, I mean!

  • I’ve never knit a log cabin blanket before, but I have done mitered squares!

  • I’ve never done a log cabin blanket, but I really, really want to! It is so beautiful!

  • I have never made a log cabin blanket but I would love to with this gorgeous yarn and pattern.

  • I started a log cabin blanket years ago after doing some log cabin squares for a guild charity project. I resurrected the unfinished blanket for the Logalong, and hope to get it done this time!

  • I made Kay’s mitered crosses blanket with Noro for Japan earthquake relief. It was very addictive, and one of my most satisfying projects. And for a good cause! Thanks for supporting knitting for human kindness.

  • Already find Snippets in my email each morning (and look forward to it!). Never knew about the log cabin technique but now have a slow burn of ideas for an afghan. Love watching the group discussion and peoples samples as the log- a- thon progresses.

  • What a pretty set of colors! Haven’t yet tried log cabin, but I only have the sleeves to do on the easel sweater, so I’m about ready for a new project!

  • My favorite log cabin – no disrespect meant to my Log Cabin Runner! – to date is my ‘Log cabin for Judah,’ inspired by the Fussy Cuts blanket. With its brilliant Noro colors, it reminds me of a little Kandinsky MOMA has (she said modestly).
But when I’m done with my Albers Cowl for the logalong, it may take over that top spot! Right now my logalong is a slogalong because I have to redo the sleeves on the Granito I’m hoping to wear to VKLive. I accidentally knit them on a 3 needle instead of a 4. There was some knitter’s denial involved.

Looking forward to another year of loving your posts. And yes, maybe even winning one of your giveaways! Thanks!

  • My grandma knitted afghans and I love mine. Here’s a link to a photo of it: https://images4-b.ravelrycache.com/uploads/wyomingjan/14628334/Grandma_s_1929_afghan_medium2.JPG

  • I’ve done log cabin baby blankets several times now, Modernism Baby Blanket by Jill Chapman is my go-to pattern. Makes a great lap robe too. Already getting snippets.

  • I’ve never done any log cabin knitting but I am really inspired by the current log along.

  • I have not knit a nine patch or log cabin blanket, but I have sewn them with fabric. Looks to be a warm project.

  • I’ve made a couple of squares just to do it but would love to try a blanket!!!

  • Never made a log cabin pattern before but your posts this week have inspired me

  • I have never knit log cabin anything before, but have been reading and re-reading the Field Guide to get the mechanics in my head. And I was drooling over the Donegal Tweed in your shop. So many decisions!

  • I knit your Mitered crosses blanket out of handspun shetland wool and it is the most warm and delightful thing ever!

  • I made a Fussy Cuts blanket for my husband several years ago for Valentine’s Day. I used a variegated yarn that created beautiful blocks. It was a labor of love! I also converted the pattern to crochet and have made several crochet blankets with the log cabin patterns. I love that geometric aspect of log cabin and the many ways of putting them together!

  • I’ve never tried log cabin, but I would love to!

  • I have only played with log cabin patterns in fabric and admired some beautiful quilt specimens. I would love to try a knitted log cabin and those winter chill busting colors are inspiring!

  • Never have knitted anything log cabin, but would love to give it a go!
    Amazing giveaway, thanks!

  • I’ve never done a log cabin knit, but I’m interested in the “portability” of a project like that!

  • I have done the original log cabin blanket in colors one of my nieces loved. I remember that for some reason, the tip that I took away from that project was to keep 2 pin markers on the blanket. Why is that? I can’t remember, I will have to make another to find out! Love ❤️ you guys.

  • I have never done Log Cabin knitting but I would like to give it a try!

  • Signed up for snipet! Have been enjoying my daily emails…I have never knit a log cabin before but I’m very intrigued and would love to get those beautiful colors!

  • I have done Log Cabin knitting and I love it. My first was your Moderne baby blanket for my sister’s first baby, who is now 6, and it is still his blankie. I did another log cabin for his younger brother. I definitely liked the Moderne better – the other last larger and fewer blocks.

  • The only log cabining I’ve done is to make all of the washcloths following Kay’s patterns in the field guide, so my kids both have colorful washcloths now. :). Would love the opportunity to knit this gorgeous blanket to cosy up with during this long cold winter here in Nashville. Love this website and all that y’all do. -MaryBeth

  • Great giveaway. Yes, I did a log cabin knitting project once, but it was so long ago I can’t remember what it was! Seems I NEED to win so I can start a new project.

  • My favorite log cabin project? The one I’m working on–when I work on one. I’ve made some log cabin blocks and a 9-patch blanket or two. I have a scrappy wool log-cabin block project started 🙂 very fun!

  • I’ve never made a log cabin anything, but really like the idea of being able to start small and build. would love your kit to get me started!

  • I have never log-cabinned before but just cast on a dishcloth to experiment! I have been drawn to it for a while, partly because my grandparents were Amish and as such, all things of beauty had to be useful. The quilts and home furnishings they made were incredible and when I knit, I feel a real kinship with those who have gone before me. I’ve been wanting to start a winter log cabin knitting project but felt a little daunted by the hurdle of selecting and buying yarn. This set looks awesome and I would love to help it to its intended destiny of becoming a gorgeous blanket!
And I’ve drooled a bit over the book too!

  • Well, a gazillion years ago, I started a Miterd Crosses Blanket https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mitered-crosses-blanket-for-mercy-corps, but it has been in timeout for a few years. I would love an opportunity to win the kit. The -6ºF with a windchill of -20ºF would be useful this time of year! 🙂

  • Inspired by you all over the years, I’ve done a fair amount of log cabin knitting, but I would say my favorite was one I did while we were moving. It was all one color, so the “wrong side” with the pick up ridges was the interesting side. I loved it because it was a source of sanity in a crazy time period.

  • Never have done Log Cabin. Am making something from your Sequence Book so I’m sure the Log Cabin would be just as amazing.

  • I’ve never knit a log cabin blanket but plan to start one this month with some beautiful Rowan superwash in my stash—unless I win this kit!

  • I’ve never done log cabin knitting. When I was younger I made a lot cabin quilt with strips of fabric. So much fun!

  • I made a Joseph’s Blankie of Many Colors for my daughter when she was a baby (she’s now 10). I made it with 100% cotton yarn, I would make it in wool next time. I also contributed to a Moderne for a friend’s baby, our knitting group collaborated on it. I keep thinking of making a queen or king size one for us…maybe in the colors of Piet Mondrian? That pattern is a blockbuster. 🙂

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’ve not done a formal log cabin, but I’ve made a blanket that is kind of like this…but oh how I LOVE it!!!! Please pick me!!!!!

  • Your log cabin patterns have been an inspiration from when I was a new knitter. I love the geometric magic of them. I don’t think there is anything more satisfying than watching the magic unfold in your lap as you knit.

  • I’ve made (and/or designed) several log cabin blankets. As you know, they are addictive. My favorite is one that will be published this coming March!

  • The first Log Cabin I made was for a soon-to-be-born baby, who is now 10 years old. While I used only off-white fingering weight acrylic, the finished afghan was luxurious, not only in feel, but very much in appearance. I have since lost count on how many such afghans I have whipped up, both knit and crochet; they’re a great way to use the odds & ends one finds in her yarn collection!

  • I love log cabin knitting and have knitted a variety of log cabin patterns. From dishcloths to blankets. I knitted my son a denim Curve of Pursuit blanket (log cabin knitting with long triangles instead of rectangles) after seeing a picture of it in your first MDK book. My favorite way to knit log cabin though is changing colors after knitting the center and then again after knitting all four sides in one color, etc. Love the nine-patch squares too, especially paired with the Ultra Alpaca and color way 2 of the kit (which I test knitted for Field Guide No. 4). Log Cabin Knitting should be required knitting!

  • Log cabin knitting is my most favorite, and it is how I first discovered Kay & Ann. It subsequently led to an online friendship with knitter Yolanda (@gravesgapknitter) after an MDK post about ‘blankets on a hill’. https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/blankets-on-a-hill/
My most favorite log cabin project is the Peaches & Creme cotton multi-colored baby blanket I made after seeing that post. I would love to make the 9-patch, thx!!!!

I don’t know Shirley, but every Australian of Anglo or Indigenous background had a cousin, aunt or friend Shirley and they are always ‘true blue’, ‘bonza’ and ‘fair dinkum’.

I have knitted many log cabins but struggled to get really good casting on until I picked up with smaller needles and took very pink knits refresher advice on you tube.

  • I haven’t made a log cabin yet but do have one on the needles. Doing large blocks and using scrap yarn so may not be the colors I prefer but it’ll still keep us warm.

  • I have a Moderne Log Cabin blanket in progress. This is my only log cabin project. It was started in 2010, intended for my son’s bed at college. He graduated a few years ago. Somehow I mis-calculated and instead of being dorm room bed size, it is almost queen size. The last two squares with the intarsia are about 1/3 done. This is the winter I should get it finished.

  • I have never made a log cabin blanket. But we do have a cabin on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada that we built in the 60s.

  • I made my first Log Cabin blanket for my nephew’s arrival in 2007 following the Moderne Log Cabin blanket formula published in the Curious Knitters Guide using pastel colors of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease. My husband liked it so much, I used the left-overs to knit him a blanket. Like all things that are warm, cuddly, and belong to someone else, that blanket was appropriated by my then five-year old son. It has been repaired several times and still has its place at the foot of his bed. I then made another blanket for my DH using more “mature” colors of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease: think khaki green, red, black, and cream. It would be awesome to knit a Log Cabin blanket in Berroco Ultra Alpaca for me!

  • I have made several log cabin patterns as it is my favourite, a few pillow tops, baby blankets etc. I have two in progress. One has two large squares, one square is red, white and black, the other is a reddish brown, brown and green made with an aran weight, and plan to do two more, one with yellow and purple, not sure about the other one. The second is going to be a scarf or shawl made from Noro fingering. Going to make 12 or 14″ square and will decide later the shape. Its my take-a-long project when I can only work on something simple like garter. Happy New Year and love your emails. 🙂

I’ve done a log cabin quilt (which was fun in that it was for my son and DIL. Fondling cotton fabric doesn’t have the same…you know…… luscious texture running through my fingers). I’m anxious to knit a log cabin and love alpaca anything!

I have started a proper log cabin blanket though! I’m just doing larger squares of courthouse steps motifs in undyed wool, so things don’t get too unruly. It’s fun!

  • Hi there from frozen Michigan! I’ve knit socks, sweaters, vests, berets & other warm-wear for heads, mittens, assorted scarves, and even one Teddy bear. Somehow, I’ve neglected to knit a blanket. It’s not going to warm up anytime soon. A cuddly something to knit while trying to ignore the hum of the furnace and the spin of the gas meter is just the right thing to do.

  • I made a wonderfully warm log cabin blanket out of a bulky mohair/wool yarn. It’s been doing a great job of keeping me warm through this frigid spell!

  • Log cabin is great. My absolute favorite is my A Light in the Window blanket out of wool yarn stash leftovers! I’ve also crocheted two smaller log cabin lap blankets; each was one big log cabin square.

  • As a newbie knitter, I’m a log-cabin blanket virgin. I love the pixelated effect of the Ninepatch blanket pattern! I think (and hope) that as I become a more veteran knitter, that these log cabin patterns would be fantastic way to make use of my scrap stash!

  • How gorgeous! I’m dying to do a log cabin project, but if I won the Giveaway, I’d have to Give It Away, since I’m (sob) allergic to alpaca, and have cats who would snuggle into a knitted blanket – no doubt purring all the while – and happily knead it. Which would make a mess of the knitting, which would make me cry and yell at them, and – well – no doubt better for all of us for me to knit something else.

With below zero lows and wind chills here, I think it may be time to dig it out and put another log or so on it. After all it’s gotten big enough for a lap warmer anyway. (And I already am a Snippets reader.)

  • Big fan of MD Knitting and look forward to your weekly newsletters. When you introduced the Field Guides, I jumped on and ordered them. Besides being useful for projects, they make great conversation pieces on my coffee table with my knitter friends. I have the Log Cabin Field Guide and also the Techniques Guide referred to in your collateral. • I just recently started knitting my first log cabin blanket. Your colors are quite lovely!!

  • I haven’t done any log cabin knitting–yet!

  • Never knitted one, helped at The yarn shop with sewing Ann’s together.

  • I’ve never knitted a log cabin anything (that I recall) but I made a quilt top (incorrectly, but it was still pretty), and a pillow with embroidery to outline the seams… both about 20+ years ago. I still use the pillow on the couch, and I gave my mom the quilt (actually a comforter since it’s tied not quilted), which is still on her guest bed.

  • Yes, I’ve knitted a simple log cabin blanket! It is my only handmade-by-me blanket and my favourite! The wool came from local sheep, is unprocessed, I dyed it myself with onion skins. I think it is magic and has healing properties.

  • Log cabin is my go to patten for scrap baby blankets!

It’s a lovely yarn a what a pleasure to knit.

  • I have done log cabin knitting before, but it’s been a while. My favorite thing was the Moderne Baby Blanket I made for an expectant friend: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/jeanbees/moderne-baby-blanket

    It was a big hit!

I’m often color challenged and so one thing i love about log cabin is the freedom it gives me to experiment. I did that with my first logcabin afghan amd gained a lot of color confidence, althiugh i still have a very long way to go in that department.

Thanks so for the prize. Congrats to that very lucky winner! I’ve been eying thos pattern for some time…..

Not afraid of bright colors, but I’m decidedly unimaginative when it comes to color-combining – too locked into Roy G. Biv to make truly exciting choices. /:-\

I sort of started out following the Modern Daily moderne pattern…but at some point I was in a car knitting and didn’t have the book with me when it came time to color change…so I veered. I veered wildly. I just knit logs every which way in whatever color struck my fancy. As someone who breaks out in hives generally when asked to go off itinerary, it was an incredibly freeing experience. Admittedly, I have never gone off pattern since…but out there in the world there is at least ONE blanket that shows I am physically capable of spontaneity.

So far I have the basics down and I really enjoy it. It’s so calming and relaxing. I’ve never heard of Modern Daily Knitting and I happened to come across your website on accident. However, I am extremely happy I did! I absolutely love the look of the log cabin blanket, and I have to say, you have the most beautifully colored yarn, and it’s made of alpaca AND wool? Seriously? That’s awesome! I live in a small town, and the only place I can get yarn is at the local store. Not much of a selection. I’m somewhat afraid to buy yarn online because you never know what you’re really going to get? To me, the most important thing about yarn is how it feels. Is it soft? Is it going to make me itch? (Things like that) but you can’t feel it via the world wide web. Lol. I’m really hoping I win this give-a-way. I was just laid off of my job right before Christmas, and winning this would put a smile of my face again. It would also give me something to do. I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed.

  • I have made 2 log cabin baby blankets (gave away both) from the M/D knitting book plan – love the way it can be geometric and planned before starting or knit on the fly.

  • Yes I made one have years and years ago. I started with making square blocks in a plain stocking stitch measuring 12” x 12″ . The colors I chose were wine , off white and a combination color yarn of wine and black. It was done in Briggs and Little worsted yarn. I must of had at least 64 -72 blocks made , just layered in a box. And I had never gotten around to sewing the blocks together after I had started my family. Just kept moving that box with me where ever we moved to . Until finally my daughter ‘s mother-law saw it on one of my moving days about 5 years ago. Well she offered to crochet it together and we would give to the “kids” for a Christmas present. And that is just what we did . It turned out beautiful , if I do say so myself . My daughter tells me it is the go to blanket my grand-daughters grab on chilly evenings in Vancouver , B.C. Canada.

I also signed up for the snippets newsletter. Thanks for this lovely giveway.

  • I am a fairly new knitter (re-taught myself a year ago after 50 years of not touching needles) and have never tried a log cabin pattern… yet!

  • This is precisely the kind of weather where I start thinking about a blanket as the next project!

  • Glorious colored yarn! I have not knitted a log cabin blanket . I did , however, make a log cabin quilt the
Original way, all hand stitching. Thiis was in 1979. Knitting one would be far easier on the finger tips!

  • I’ve not made a log cabin blanket before. I have been wanting to try one. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • I’ve knit a couple blankets but not with the log cabin technique. Looking forward to trying one soon.

  • log cabin is one of my favorite things to make! I did one of those blankies that (memory fails me — a woman who lives in the middle of the country, and whose booklets were filled with non-pro artwork) was popular some many years ago. Probably I’ve done some others, but that made such a nice first gift for our oldest/first grandchild; he’s now 22 years old. Yikes!

  • Wow, what an incredible giveaway! I’ve only quilted 9-patch blankets, but would love to knit one.

  • Hi! I’ve never (yet) knitted a log cabin anything, but have crocheted a log cabin block and hand-pieced a small log cabin quilt top! I have also loom-knitted mitered squares, but never thought about using them to “build” a log cabin. I DO needle knit, so I’m looking forward to the challenge when you pick me as the winner!

  • No. I have never ” log cabin” knitted, but it looks really pretty and string. I would love to do it. 🙂 🙂

  • I’m well into my station wagon blanket at the moment, but I’ve begun eyeing some log cabin ideas for my next big project. I did crochet a log cabin blanket years ago, and it is one of my kids favorites for snuggling under on the sofa.

  • Hi. You know, of all the knitting I have done I have never made a log cabin blanket. This offer probably does not apply to me as I am in Oz and now you are probably wondering why anyone would want to knit in a country of sunshine but my mum taught me to knit growing up in the uk and I find it just the best form of meditation. In summer I love to knit socks as you don’t have that mass of fabric across your lap on a hot day. In winter I still love to knit socks. It’s an addiction I think. However, a log cabin blanket would also fit the bill as a summer project, small pieces to knit through summer, which is now, ready in time for winter. Would a log cabin blanket break me of my addiction to socks? You know what, I am thinking that it just might!

  • I have never done some thing like this, but would love to learn

  • I’ve never knit log cabin style before, but I’ve always wanted to try.

  • I knit the Modern Log Cabin blanket in 2016 as a Christmas gift for my mother. It was all kinds of fun at first and then a horrible slog towards the end (as the rows get longer with each section). She loves the blanket tho. I also have a project sketched out for the log-along, but I am holding off on casting it on, since I have 18 other garments I want to knit this year…. probably way too ambitious! Winning this kit would be amazing tho, I was just thinking I have an aunt and uncle who could use a blanket for their cabin.

Would love to knit a Ninepatch, too!

Color scheming and yarn shopping can be the whole experience. I wish I had my RRA with me. We have voluntarily driven from our -2 degree home to spend the weekend where it is -28. I really want to add a curse word here.

  • It’s cold all winter in Northeast Scotland so I know you are right, blankets are the answer, but blankets you can move about in are the most practical if you need a cup of tea and have to get from the sofa to the kettle in the kitchen so my favourite project that I am going to try this year is that log cabin kimono jacket I saw here a few issues ago. beautiful and warm if knitted in whatever the Scottish equivalent of the gorgeous Berrocco is!

  • About ten years ago, after I moved back to Chicago, I bought your first book and fell in love with the urban log cabin blanket. So I went to a yarn shop, bought a bunch of quality yarn (I couldn’t really afford, in colorways I didn’t love), and cast on. I got as far as square four before I hated the colors and put the project aside. I haven’t tried again since but I would love to.

  • I’ve never made a log cabin blanket but would love to try. I adore the interplay of the colors and would like to knit one. I have the Techniques book but would like be the yarn! Though technically we missed being hit by the storm we have been bombarded by lake effect snow and brutal cold.

This past year I knit an adolescent sized log cabin blanket (with rectangles instead of squares) for the Linus Project. I love that you don’t need a pattern once you know the technique and you can play with colors, this kind of no-pattern knitting is fun and addictive AND you can watch TV AND talk to your hubby at the same time (it makes football season more tolerable for me)!!!!!
