My favorite local clotheshorse Taylor Swift was wearing a shade of Donna Karan eggplant that shall live on forever in my memory. Aubergine! Yes!
Cathy Horyn at the NYT (google this!) was complaining that the women looked vulnerable and trapped in their gowns. Whatever! It’s the RED CARPET! This is what these women do, and they’re not idiots. Kristen Stewart takes off her shoes mid-premiere. I think most actors are game for it all. If they’re really miserable about it, they stay home.
Cannot possibly link to all the magnificent wardrobe moments, but just go to people.com and wallow in the beautiful discomfort of it all.
I thought Jodie Foster was very moving, once I caught the current she was riding. A mix of confident and nervous. I loved her boys so much.
Lena Dunham. I am still on the fence about Lena Dunham. I watched the first season of Girls, back to back, in a flu-enhanced fog, and I was left with the feeling that I’d seen a lot of flesh that I didn’t really want to see. I understand what she’s doing, and I respect it, and a lot of the time it’s really, really funny. She is unusually honest in just about every way. But I think she goes to the flesh option too often. It’s too easy to do, gets such an instant reaction. You can explore the awkwardness and unpleasantness of sex without illustrating it.
Also, and I know this is deeply controversial, but it comes from a person whose pain threshold and general wimpiness mean she doesn’t have pierced ears or contact lenses: I don’t like her ink. I know it’s illustrations from children’s books, but I can’t tell which ones. AT LEAST FOOTNOTE YOUR TATTOOS, LENA! NEED A BIBLIOGRAPHY OVER HERE.
If I were going to ink myself, I’d go for a pattern. Something in here. You don’t want to get too literal with the ink–it’s human wallpaper that I’d want. Decorate thyself!
Finally, I did yeoman’s work on my Thorn shawl. For those wondering how the second skein of yarn is looking–the one with the flashes of chartreuse?
In the olden days, I’d photoshop a red line halfway down this photo to show you where the second skein starts. Imagine one! But you can see clearly where the light blips are showing up. I am not necessarily loving this, but I am finding it very authentic, and maybe on the day after the Golden Globes, when Jodie Foster was reminding us about the need for keepin’ it real, that’s enough.

I don’t think the chartreuse is the issue with the second skein. There seems to be a lot more white showing. How many skeins will you be using, and what do any additional ones look like? If you are not loving this look now, you might want to re-evaluate sooner rather that later. Just saying
ItItcup–What looks white in this (terrible/fast photo) IS the chartreuse part. It just looks washed out here. But it is definitely a totally different value. Thinking hard about this!
I think it’s a nice mix of blips ~ at least they are more or less evenly distributed! I always seem to get the dreaded “pooling” in one spot, and this isn’t that. Jodie Foster was keeping it real. I admire her so much, even if she does stick by Mel, who has obviously lost his middle-aged marbles, but she has her reasons, I guess.

I have a full back, so ink doesn’t bother me. I just wish I had more of it. I like the little brighter green blips. They are cheerful, like walking into the woods and seeing the sun through the canopy.

Count me in as pro-blip. Anti-ink. But maybe that’s just because one of Carrie’s newly-pierced earlobes has completely swallowed the earring (a tiny gold-dome stud). I didn’t even know that could happen, outside of science fiction. The earlobe that ate Manhattan.

I think I’m hip to what she’s up to, but it doesn’t seem all that novel when you dig a bit, especially with the HBO-ish “now is the time on Girls when we have badly-lit sex.” I do appreciate her ballsy, non-model-ish-ness, but man, wear flats. Unless that was all a gig to showcase outsider authenticity. Perhaps that’s it — she seems a bit too savvy? Enough already. 🙂 I am over-the-moon with your lightning blogging.

I had heard so much positive hype about Girls, that, when I finally watched it, I was really surprised by how much nudity there was, and definitely discomforted by it (it didn’t help that my younger male siblings kept arriving as soon as one of those scenes began). As a young clueless woman, the dynamics of the sexual escapades Lena is depicting are very real for my generation – we have some weird ideas about it. I know my opinion is tainted by my whole she-is-the-voice-of-my-generation thing, but you know . . . I really feel like she’s the voice of my generation.

Re Golden Globe cleavage display: I wish I had the spirit gum/double-stick tape concession last night. And…Bill Clinton, in his satin-label suit and black tie, looked like he’d just come from a Greek funeral.
Lena Dunham? As the mother of a “Girls”- aged girl, I’ve been advised not to watch her show, for the sake of my own mental health and maternal anxiety. Liked her brown dress, though. The tattoos? Meh, even though they were Eloise and Ferdinand.

If you’re going to ink yourself with instructions, it might as well be the instructions for doing the Kitchener stitch, so you’d always have them with you, no matter what.
Lissa–I can’t remember where I saw it, but a knitter tattooed a thin black line on the side of her foot to indicate where to start decreasing for the toe on a sock.

Ann: RE the Blips, think scale, or perhaps distance; as in step away from the macro lens. When you put on the shawl the chartreuse will become part of the color field and the blips will become sunlight on water. Live in the color field, dance on the water!
Do watch Lena Dunham’s “Tiny Furniture”. To me it is more accomplished than “Girls” which suffers a bit (but only a bit) from HBO syndrome — exposed flesh and all. I also find the acting more evenly great on “Tiny Furniture”, including all the non-professionals.
As for ink: three now-adult daughters, one (tiny) ankle tattoo, one (tiny) nose-piercing. Sigh. Fortunately their grandmother is very, very near-sighted!
I am having the same issue with a second skein of Rustic Tweed on a Devonshire Cream cowl — I knew it might be a problem going in, but I chose to ignore the obvious solution and work from two skeins. Ironically, the last time I had this problem was on a Nomad Hat for the same friend that is getting this cowl! She is gonna think I do not ever pick matching skeins of yarn! Oh well.
Re Lena Dunham. I loved that she geeked out at celebrities. When Bill Clinton was on stage, the camera cut to her. She looked gobsmacked. She looked like she had just high pitch girl squealed in pure excitement.
Also, she went to Oberlin where my kid is enrolled. Can’t get more liberal and geeky that there. She brings out the maternal in me….(I know it’s weird…)
