In Praise of the Triangular Shawl
Some knitting patterns lead you along to glory.
Take, for example, Carol Feller’s Twining Wrap, a highlight of MDK Field Guide No. 14: Refresh.
I’m about halfway through what for me is a pretty splashy bit of knitting. There’s a lot going on in this design: three different cable patterns, all cranking simultaneously, and there’s a never-ending increase happening along the right edge.
It’s a lot to keep track of. But the thing is, the way Carol wrote this pattern meant I could ease into it, bit by bit.
The cleverest part: the pattern starts with 4 stitches. That’s all.
I got my feet wet with a narrow little triangle, no big deal. It gave me time to the hang of the charts and increase pattern with a small investment of knitting.
First came the Increase Panel, which showed me how this thing was going to grow.
Then came the Padded Cable.
Then Carol eased in the Twisted Cable.
And finally the Diagonal Cable showed up.
The longer I worked on this, the more I came to know what to do. It was a bit of rubbing my head and patting my stomach, definitely a chance to learn something new.
I continue to love this Nua Sport yarn like a Jumbo Mallow s’more . . .
And I’m looking forward to the moment when I can swaddle myself in my Twining Wrap like this:

I wish I had someone to teach me basics so I could get started!
I recently completed my first triangular scarf and while it wasn’t as intricate as yours, I enjoyed watching it come to life. Only problem is once i got out to the zillion stitches and realized I had lots of those rows left the “instant gratification ” switch got turned off.
I love the look of this wrap and am about to begin. I’m curious though. Refresh shows the Transom gauge at 21 stitches and this wrap at 27 stitches. Yet both use the same yarn and size 6 needles. Am I missing something? I have swatched on a few sizes but have not gotten 27 stitches on any. Help!!
Disregard – I figured it out. That’s 29 stitches over the cable block. Read the entire sentence roni!!
I just finished the first sleeve of my Transom cardigan. After the knitting gymnastics of the sleeve cap, it all clicked and came out so good. This pattern is full of new to me knitting which I love.
The Iqaluit shawl is designed like this. It’s by The Petite Knitter. It was so fun watching different patterns emerge and when you get to 200+ stitches wide, you change color and repeat the patterns decreasing as you go. It was a contender in MDK March Mayhem a couple of years ago!
