Just Mercy
Dear Ann,
In light of the current national outcry and discussion of the devastating effects of systemic racism, the film Just Mercy, which was released in December 2019, is available to stream for free during the month of June.
Just Mercy is based on the true story of Bryan Stevenson’s defense of men on death row who were innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted. I am listening to Bryan Stevenson’s book of the same title right now. It’s riveting, revelatory, inspiring. Here’s the New York Times review, with one of its fascinating “Anatomy of a Scene” videos, narrated by director Destin Daniel Cretton.
You can stream if for free by clicking on the “buy” link in the YouTube preview up top, or from other streaming services.
I know what we’ll be watching this evening.
Love,
Kay
Thank you as always for great suggestions. I just heard Rev. Michael Curry’s Pentacost sermon from the National Cathedral website. Kind and healing message for our time– even if you don’t often listen to sermons. Put the other person’s well being at least equal– he miight say above–your own. Thanks for your vigilance in finding good “stuff”!
Thank you, I will listen. (Religious Left gal here.).
Thanks, will listen today
Great book. Am looking forward to watching the movie.
Last year a friend gave me the book for my birthday. I couldn’t put it down and was both aghast and horrified at the abject corruption of the “justice” system. People we have a lot of work to do. Please become involved in a constructive way and really understand how you can make a difference.
The book is very thought provoking. Amazes me how much I did not know. Thanks for giving out great info
Oops! I know you didn’t mean to, but- your banner.
And then it changed! Thanks.❤️
Thank you always for your meaningful content! xo
I had started the book before George Floyd was killed and just finished it. If you prefer reading to watching (as I do), I highly recommend it. It’s very well written and what he has to say is so important.
Thank you!
Bryan Stevenson was on PBS days ago. He summarized the evolution of Policing and its evolution. Thank you so much!
I downloaded the book a few days ago and was in the middle of reading it when I discovered the movie was available on Netflix for free. I watched it last night and it was riveting! While the acting is superb, the main star is the story itself. It is an eye-opening true account of the callous disregard of the justice system for a fellow human being. The question one is left with is, what can I do to help right these wrongs?
I saw the movie in our local arts theater and burst into tears at the end, couldn’t stop, didn’t even feel the tears coming on.
One thing we can all do is contact our politicians and let them know how we feel about how they vote, what policies they support and demand that they vote for the necessary changes.
Yes! I watched this film last night and the New Jim Crow era ‘injustice’ system is harshly real in this film.
Conveniently, my daughter was just given a year’s subscription to Netflix by her aunt (my sis), so I think we will have a movie club night for this— I think they call it a party, but I can’t call this a party, for obvious reasons. Thank you.
Watched it with hope that this time (2020 )we will get it right
The movie was good, but the book was wonderful!
Just finished watching it. Brilliant and moving work. We all must keep listening and learning our collective history.
Thank you for making us aware of the free streaming. I watched it and have no words. Will real change ever happen in our justice system?
Excellent movie! We watched last night on Prime for free…
The thing I’m confused on racism God created {{{{ US ALL}}}}} in his own image 27 So God created( mankind in his own image, in the image of God( he created them; male and female he created them. GENESIS 1:27 Mixing up language and skin 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[a]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. GENESIS 11:5-9 But we all still have the same BLOODLINE So what is the reason for racism? There is none
I agree wholeheartedly. The world is becoming too crowded to be prejudiced against anyone.
Please also watch 13th, available on Netflix. The real lawyer portrayed in Just Mercy speaks, among others, repeatedly in 13th. Its brilliant and a must watch.
Learn more about the work of Bryan Stevenson at https://eji.org/. The Equal Justice Initiative is a human-rights organization that challenges convictions, advocates for criminal-justice reform and racial justice, and created the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, in Montgomery, Alabama.
Interestingly, since the 9-11 destruction of the Twin Towers, face recognition has come a long, long way. Face recognition now recognizes clothing preferences, tattoos and more. Arrests have already begun. The man being assaulted with skateboards, a knife and guns by a crowd of violent protesters in Seattle, and in defense, after trying repeatedly to get away from his attackers, finally shot three or four rounds at the most aggressive protester. All charges against the man defending himself have been dropped. Perhaps Bryan Stevenson’s defense of men on death row who were innocent of the crimes for which they were convicted will finally be resolved. Every day I pray for EVERYONE, literally. Not just my family and friends, but EVERYONE. Since the violent protesters began destroying our reality, I pray many, many times a day and will not stop until our reality returns to normal. God, please bless ALL of us and keep us safe.
