Dear Ann,

A conversation we had recently (subject: Johnny Rotten’s mohair sweaters) prompted me to go on an internet hunt for material about punk designers featured in the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum a few years ago. This led me onward in search of material about the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen.  In 2011, Savage Beauty, a blockbuster exhibition of his work, also at the Met, knocked me for a loop. Like many others I found exquisite beauty in the gorgeously tailored, unsettling pieces on display. In deep grief myself at the time, I felt like he was speaking directly to me.

In my internet rambles, I learned the exciting news that a feature-length documentary, McQueen, was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and will be released in theatres later this summer. (The trailer is above.)

To whet our appetite for the film, here’s Tim Blanks’s interview with the McQueen filmmakers, Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, on the Business of Fashion podcast.

We have something great to look forward to.

Love,

Kay

  • Ok, that’s different. I would watch the show although it is not my taste I do appreciate learning new things.

  • Oooo! Thanks for the tip. Looking forward to it!

  • Thank you! We are heading to the local independent theatre this week to see the Mr. Rogers movie (stop snickering, he was an amazing human being and I have been looking forward to it since I saw the trailer a couple of months ago) and I will definitely ask them about this one.

    • Mr. Rodgers was an amazing person! Who would snicker at him? How was the movie?

      • I am going this week but we took the 11 year old to see the new Incredibles movie yesterday (which was actually full of people without kids and which was surprisingly good) and there was a group of women sobbing in the ladies room. They had just come out of the movie and loved it. They said that his death was just such a loss that the entire theatre was in tears even though they all knew how it would end. They all agreed that it was a must see.

    • I would never snicker towards Mr. Rogers! He was a interesting, strong, and caring man. He was a treasure and out children’s tv landscape is the lesser for his loss.
Now some of his side characters I might snicker at ( Mr. McFeely? snicker).

  • I was thrilled to have been accidentally in town to see the McQueen exhibit in 2011, (as well as on purpose in Montreal to see YSL retrospective in 2008.) Anyone who loves beauty would love McQueen and I look forward to it. Thanks for the tip, Kay. I hope it comes to FilmStreams here in the Big O soon. On my way to see Mr. Rogers which is showing now.

  • There’s a movie about Vivienne Westwood, too! Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist.
