’80s Dance Party
Dear Ann,
Summer has arrived. Here in New York, and all over, June means Pride, and people filling the streets and parks. The people who roller skate every weekend on the east side of Central Park—are doing that. The man who makes giant bubbles is in front of the bandshell. You can hardly cross the park without running into a drum circle.
Result: I’m in the mood for an ’80s Dance Party. Time to embarrass some youngsters. Momma’s doing the pony again.
For a playlist, WFUV has come through with a good one. It’s very US-centric. Brits and others, feel free to link us up to some other ’80s playlists in the comments.
How to knit and dance at the same time? Improvise! The dancing will improve the knitting, and the knitting won’t hurt the dancing.
Love,
Kay
Last year, when I was moaning about not getting enough exercise, My friend Julie came up with the concept of circuit knitting. You knit for twenty minutes, then get up and move for ten. Now, I knit with my headphones on and every 20 minutes get up and move that body. Dancing to my faves is always on my “movement” menu. This 80’s dance party fits right in to the routine! Thanks!
I see “Whip It” is on the list. I was driving through a construction zone last week and that song came on. I thought about blasting it, getting out of the car, grabbing a construction cone and putting it on my head while I danced around the road.
I would pay money to see that. It’s one of my favorite tunes.
Y’all are the best! I have had Freak Nasty’s Da Dip stuck in my head since I started working on the dip stitch hat for this month’s Arnall-Culliford-Culliford project. I am getting a little tired of it running through my head and this is knocking it right out of there. My nephew, who is 11 years younger than me calls this the era of really big dance moves. No subtle dancing in my house!
80’s?
You young thing!
Happy World Wide Knit in Public Day to all
My other half calls WWKIPD “Pride for Knitters”. I wish the music were as good.
I thought this post would be about WWKIPD. My guild is set up to knit at Ikea today — how public can you get??! This is after we received a “True Confession” from a member admitting that she sometimes knit on the living room furniture in Ikea, and if she dropped a stitch marker between the cushions, she didn’t bother to retrieve it.
Kay, you were right — that playlist needs some help. I’d add Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon” and “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya”; Bananarama’s “Venus,” “Cruel Summer,” and “Robert DeNiro’s Waiting”; and Nick Lowe’s “I Knew The Bride (When She Used to Rock ‘n Roll).” And, if you REALLY want to embarrass your children, you have to dance to the Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian”!
Well, there’s no Adam Ant but I will sing Tainted Love at the top of my voice!
Some Oz rock/pop to add to the mix: Air Supply – “All out of love”, “Lost in Love”; Crowded House – “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (everything ever! Really they are NZ but we adopted them); INXS; TheChurch – “Under the Milky Way”; Men at Work – “Who can it be now?”; Rick Springfield – “Jessie’s Girl”; Little River Band- “Night Owls”; Australian Crawl – “Reckless”
Okay, you’ve ALL added to my play list line-up. Not sure I can knit to it, but it’ll keep me moving in the kitchen, my home dance floor.
