Knit to This: Playing on Air
Playing on Air—the podcast that features original plays by both established and emerging playwrights performed by gobs of household-name actors—has been around for almost a decade, but never have I been so devoted to it as I have been over the past year or so. Genuine in-person theatrical performances have obviously come to a standstill and while nothing can really take the place of those, I do think Playing on Air has helped fill the void a little.
Christopher Durang, Beth Henley, Romulus Linney, Lynn Nottage, Paul Rudnick, John Patrick Shanley—that’s just a drop in the bucket playwright-wise, and the actor list is almost too extensive to even cherry-pick. Here are some anyway: Audra McDonald, Rosie Perez, Martha Plimpton, Aidan Quinn, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Timothée Chalamet, Ed Asner, Bobby Cannavale—the list goes ON.
I haven’t been going through the list in any sort of order; I’ve just been randomly choosing from their quite-deep library of past performances. Do drop in and give one a try – most of the plays clock in under a half-hour, so they’re perfect for knitting (or snow-shoveling). And if you’re working on a sweater (or driveway) or whatever, just listen to ten of them! Then when you get invited to your first post-COVID dinner party, you can be the most-theatered person at the table. GOALS.
Thank you for this. I really miss local theatre, and will give it a try. How great to enjoy knitting and theatre at the same time!
Thank you for this recommendation. On yet another snow grey day in New England, listening to wonderful actors sounds ideal! Looking forward to some bright sparks to brighten the mood!
