Dear Kay,

Back when we were starting up our startup, I didn’t have time to listen to podcasts about startups.

Now that we’ve started up, I’ve become totally hooked on StartUp, the podcast by Gimlet Media that begins its first season by chronicling the origins of Gimlet Media. The guy who’s trying to raise money for his dream gig, a company that produces high-quality podcasts, is the guy narrating the podcast.

It’s a story told with great humor and self-deprecation by Gimlet Media’s founder, Alex Blumberg. (He’s a veteran of This American Life and Planet Money. He’s got that modesty thing down.)

If you begin with Episode 1, “How Not to Pitch a Billionaire,” I think you’ll be hooked, too. The ten episodes fly by—I knit a ton to this.

Not to be a spoiler, but at this point I’m into Season 3 of StartUp, and I continue to be fascinated by these stories of entrepreneurs trying to make something out of nothing.

Love,

Ann

  • I am waiting for the next seasons of Homecoming and Crimetown. I will have to add StartUp to my list! So many great podcasts. Thank you for sharing your recommendations!

  • I’m about to write a big, important grant application. Maybe I can get some tips from this! I’ve done startups all my life, some for pay, some volunteer. In fact, some friends and I just started a knitting guild here in Portland, OR which is a raging success (82 people at our third meeting!). See the Ravelry Group “Puddletown Knit Guild” for details. Startups are SO MUCH WORK but tremendously rewarding.

    • So fabulously successful, we need more space! I’m so glad you got PKG going, even without listening to this podcast. See you next month!

    • If you’re looking for ways to ask (and not ask) for things, you might also try Gimlet’s “The Pitch,” which specifically focuses on entrepreneurs pitching their ideas. Thanks for the tip about PKG, I’ll have to check it out!

  • “We entrepreneurially suggest you buy a giant pile of yarn from us.”

    So subtle

    😉

Also, okay, if I HAVE to! Twist my arm, why don’t you?
