Knit to This
Visible Mending
After Kate Atherley’s wonderful virtual class on Mending Made Easy, reader Pam S. emailed to tell me that the class had reminded her of this short film, and did I know it?
I enjoyed it so much that I had to share it here.
Take nine minutes to watch Visible Mending.
It’s a charming stop-motion animation in which we hear the voices of knitters and crocheters. It’s a little bit about mending your knitting, but more about how knitting mends our lives.
There is so much truth in this small package. And while the film has gentle knitting mice, and Lorna Hamilton-Brown’s incredible gauge swatch birds flitting around, it’s not a bit twee. It’s the simple truth about what knitting and crochet do for a person, and for their people, and for people they don’t even know.
Thank you Pam, I needed this.

Thank you! What a delightful beginning to my day. Just what I needed to knit the ends of a project this morning…not a yarn knitting project, but all projects are really knitting, aren’t they?
I would love to know how to knit those birds. Such a clever way to repurpose a first square, and then go on to knit more birds!
So would I. I teach beginning knitters and we turn our squares into bunnies. This year our second project was fingerless mitts.
Thank you for sharing! It’s very sweet and soothing short film to watch. Loving hearing the crafters talking of the positive effect of knittting.
Thank you so much for sharing this! Brought me to gentle tears, in the best possible way.
This makes me cry each time I watch it, and yet it’s so comforting and true. Thank you for posting it.
What a great way to start my Sunday morning! Thank you.
Delightful! Thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful video and so true. I live in Florida and in today’s world of climate change most of my knitting is done for someone else. I love the blanket story.
❤️
Lovely and comforting. Many thanks.
Such delightful start to our days! Thank you MDK ❤️
How charming! One of those things that makes you realize why animation was invented. Favorite part: sewing his/her stuffing back in. So witty. Ditto request re bird origami.
Perfection
I love this so very much! It made me think of my Mom who passed on last April. She grew up knitting in Northern Ireland and loved telling her story about knitting with friends growing up.
Oh that is just lovely. Thank you so much.
A keeper. Something to savor again when needed.
So soft and touching and true.
And so true.
That little mouse putting the stuffing back in and stitching herself back up. Yes.
Absolutely love this! ❤️
Thank you, Kay!
What a wonderful film. I recently had a life changing event. My boyfriend of 28 years died. A friend and I worked to copy a RTW crochet bag. We texted back and forth and came up with something close. It took several weeks to do this and it gave me something to focus on besides myself.
One thing I didn’t hear mentioned (but implied) is the many wonderful friends one meets through knitting. Certainly true for me. Thanks again to MDK for being a conduit to new, important friendships.
Thank you for sharing this. Even if it did make me cry.
Thank you for such a gentle and lovely way to start my day, especially after reading some news analysis. Borrowing from Ted Lasso, “Knitting is love!”
(Now I have to go dab my eyes)
Thank you so much for sharing this delightful video. It brightened my day. With a possible health crisis looming, it soothed my soul.
What a wonderful video!!!! Thank you!! I would love to know what the pattern is for the adorable mice in the video. Any chance of it being shared?
I went to Ravelry to look for the knitted critters. Lo and behold, the first thing that popped up was a knitted mouse!!
Thank you Kay, that was beautiful ❤️
So Beautiful. Thank you for this!
What a wonderful video! I have a friend just learning to knit who has been blindsided with a rare and serious disease. She’s preparing for a bone marrow transplant and has told me she’d like to find something to knit during the ordeal. Something small, not too complicated, and these tension birds would be perfect. Any chance to get a pattern? I realize it’s just basically a swatch square that is seamed diagonally, but ideas for tails and wings would be great. I didn’t see a pattern on Lorna Hamilton-Brown’s web site.

Just watched this video from Pam’s link to Lorna Hamilton Brown’s site…good message and it has some faces that many knitters will recognize.

A beautiful bit of truth in knitting. A hug for the heart.
That was beautiful ❤️
This was absolutely lovely… and, truth.
What a remarkable film! Thank you for sharing this. Great start to teh day.
Lovely film. Life-affirming and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
This is a great little video with great timing for me. We are dealing with a death in the family and it was very soothing. Also, I would love to get the pattern for the bear with the nurse’s hat. Can anyone tell me where I can get it?
What a wonderful way to start the day.
Beautiful video…thank you for posting it, Kay! Maybe Lorna Hamilton Brown would do a Zoom class for MDK on her Tension Birds for mental wellbeing if there’s enough interest…I loved Suzan’s medKnitation class and I’d sign up for this one too!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing! I, too, would love to knit the birds
Exquisite. Thank you so much for sharing this gentle and powerful little film. What a pick-me-up.
Knit to This, today aka Please Pass a Tissue to This! A touchingly true watch.
