Dear Kay,

Just when we’re all having that Sunday Night Feeling, here come two of my all-time favorites, hanging out together and making us feel better.

It’s a new concert documentary premiering tonight: Carole King & James Taylor: Just Call Out My Name, 9:00 PM ET/PT on CNN. (It’ll be on HBO Max later on.)

The concert footage dates to 2010, back in the Before Times, when this pair of old friends set out on tour together. We know all the words, right?

While waiting for the show, here’s a lovely tribute to James Taylor by Adam Gopnik.

And up top, time travel to 1972, which was about the time I heard “Fire and Rain” for the first time.

Love,

Ann

  • Oh yes, we know all the words! Great music and music makers

  • 1972 , when we were all so young and beautiful.
    Sigh

  • My two all time favorites. Takes me back!! Thank you.

    • Ditto! Rather than sending me back, like to think it’s coming to me here. World today could really use more of their soothing and happy music. Some “stop! take me to a better place– at least for a while!”

  • What a lovely essay by Adam Gopnik. Thank you so much for passing it along. While I had never really thought of it that way, I think he described Taylor’s music perfectly when he said it was sympathetic.

  • Ann thanks for the lead. I can’t wait to watch this. But you did send me down another rabbit hole. In Season 5, Episode 1, one of the early sketches in the episode remains (to me at least) one of the funniest skits they have ever done. Laraine Newman is Carole King singing You’ve Got A Friend in the front window while her friend Steve Martin gets mugged outside. I found it on Peacock (free!) and am sitting here crying laughing.

I’m sure I’ll be crying for different reasons tonight! There are so many memories attached to Carole King and James Taylor’s music.

      Will watch. Thanks!
    • Dang. That’s season 5, episode 1 of SNL.

  • Will be tuning in. Thanks for the tip, Ann.

    I can hardly wait!
  • On April 15, 1972, I went to a Concert for George McGovern, at the Forum in Los Angeles. There, from the 3rd row, front center, the show started with Carole King, James Taylor, separately, then they performed together. The next performance by Barbara Streisand, and Quincy Jones ended the programme. Not to be forgotten, ever! .

  • Thanks for the tip. Can’t wait to watch and reminisce.

  • Oh Ann! That Fire and Rain video up top is making me cry. It brings up so many different kinds of memories and touches the heart. I am recording the show for tonight, just incase. Thank you. ❤

  • Oh Ann! That Fire and Rain video up top has brought me to tears. It brings back different kinds of memories, all of which touch the heart. I am recording the program, just incase. Thank you. ❤

  • Not sure if I should sing – dance – cry – call my college boyfriend – or close my eyes and rewind to memories that still make me smile.

  • What a lovely way to spend a Sunday night! Knitting, singing and reminiscing with two of my favorite artists – many thanks for the recommendation!

  • It was such a good show

  • I was watching New Years Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The other twit they had on there said she had to be told who James Taylor and Carole King were. Oh children of today.
