Dear Ann,

It’s surprising (or maybe not surprising) how often old Saturday Night Live skits come to mind as I go about my daily life. The doorbell rings unexpectedly: “Candygram.” Not fitting in at a party: “We are from France.” Making a smoothie: “Bass-o-matic.”

Recently I had an encounter that made me smile. I tried to describe it to you, and the tool I reached for was: Delicious Dish.

That sent me down the YouTubes for gems from the late 1990s and early 2000s of these brilliant skits starring Ana Gasteyer, Rachel Dratch, Molly Shannon, and their guests.

Maybe I love it because it reminds me—just a little—of you and me, going on about Kitchener stitch and blocking boards these past 16 years. “Neat. Good times.” And: “Good Lord, that’s funny.” Also: sensible wardrobe from the deep Chico’s backlist. I’m not even sure Chico’s was around when these were made. Maybe they inspired Chico’s.

For more cooking-show parody belly laughs, I also recommend Posh Nosh. All the laughs, plus bawdy Britishness. Embarrass some vegetables!

It’s so fun being around you.

Love,

Kay

  • My all time favorite – when Mr. Schweddy was on to talk about his balls. In my house, cake balls are known as Schweddy balls.

  • Hysterical!

  • OMG, Kay! Posh Nosh is EVERYTHING! I just sent it to my BIL who has an Aga. He’s gonna flip. Richard E Grant is hilarious. Thanks for posting this. Started my Sunday morning in fine fashion.

  • Kay, Kay, KAAAAY. It pains me to point this out, but back in 2015 I posted a nice long rumination about …

    “17 Solutions for Cabbage.”

If you read this in the voice Margaret Jo, it’s 100% Delicious Dish.

  • Highly recommend Poshnosh. Go to the bathroom before you watch it.

  • OMG! Richard E Grant! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • Hahahha! So funny! Thanks for this post!

  • The one that EVERYone in my family quotes frequently is Gilda Radner, Season 1, often: “Never mind.”

    Thanks for these other memories.

  • SNL quotes are rampant in my life.

  • The Good ole days (nights) in the early SNL years. There are so many memorable quotes. But there one that always comes to my mind – when working with someone who is driving me crazy – is Dan Ackroyd: “Jane, you ignorant s***”.

  • Gosh! With you gals “it’s always something”. I’d better get my Christmas order in early so they don’t run out of Shweddy Ball Sacks before the busy holiday rush.
In our family we have a variation of the Deer Sign game- if 2 identical road signs are aligned on either side of the road it’s a Land Shark and worth more points. (Of course, like in the old Whose Line is it Anyway everything is made up and the points don’t matter!)

  • Don’t forget about “eagles rights”!

    • Violins on TV! Russian jewelry!

  • Just fabulous. Thank you for all the good morning emails I get, not just this great one. I’m a true fan!

  • Love you. Thank you!!

  • Maybe your parents didn’t let you stay up late enough. Dan Ackroyd once parodied the one and only Julia Child on SNL. “Save the liver!”

  • Thanks for Posh Nosh–hilarious!

  • “One ringy-dingy, two ringy-dingy…”

  • Every time I look at an overconstructed dish, I think of Builders Fish and Chips.

  • Thank you for reminding me of Land Shark 🙂
I clicked one of your links last night, one YT thing led to another, and I was up til after 3AM. Today will be interesting…

  • How have I never heard of posh nosh before?! I love it – thanks for the tip!

  • My favorite next to Pete Schweddy is Betty White talking about her dry, tasteless muffin.

    • Yes! Though when I think of Betty White and cooking shows, I always think first of Sue Ann Nivens, the Happy Homemaker . . .

  • Exactly!! Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon just nailed it on Delicious Dish.
