The MDK Holiday Playlist, Now and Forever
In the spirit of the season, we share the MDK holiday playlist. We are going to jingle-bell ourselves all the way home, even if the weather outside is frightful. We’re gonna be up on the rooftop, dashing through the snow, silver bells, chestnuts, all of it.
To recap: this set of songs was suggested by MDK readers in this thread from the Lounge. Thanks to everyone who suggested songs!
If the gizmo isn’t working, you can access the MDK Christmas playlist here.
There is enough music here to weave in the ends on all your gift knitting, string the lights on a 7-foot tree and write J O Y in spray-on snow on your picture window. You can glue Triscuits all over the roof of your gingerbread house. You will embrace everything from Aretha to Sufjan Stevens on this playlist.
If you like, you can mash it up with our all-Nashville Christmas playlist.
Not gonna lie: it’s probably not fair to lead off with Leslie Odom, Jr. singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” in his unearthly style. Have yourself a haunting little Christmas . . .
We love having you here with us! As we ease into the glowy glory days ahead, we wish you togetherness, peace, calm, and warm, flattering light.
With love from (clockwise, starting in the upper right corner)
Liz, Kermit, Olive, The Eternal Spirit of Elliott Long May He Haunt Us, Daisy, Ann and Kay
What?!?! No ‘So This Christmas’ by John Lennon???
I also really like God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen by The Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLaughlin
That Bare-naked Ladies holiday album is one of the best ever.
Wonderful!! I’m listening to it now.
Oh, yay! I’ve been playing the heck out of the MDK Christmas playlist, and it’s definitely time to add some more fun. (I’ve had 3 gatherings here this week, so it was new to all of them, but not to me.)
Merry Christmas, all y’all!
Oh, c’mon. That playlist isn’t long enough for Kay to weave in all the ends from the Big Floral Damask Thing, even if she’s lucky enough to catch the Thing. Besides, we know the main song on her playlist is Adam Sandler’s “The Chanukah Song”. So where is the year-end music for the rest of us? (I’d suggest “2000 Miles” by the Pretenders.) For that matter, where are The Jingle Cats, undoubtedly Kermit’s favorite group?
Thank you for this. I am happy to see Fairytale of New York near the top of the list! It’s bleaker than, well, In the Bleak Midwinter, but sometimes that’s just what you need. And thank you for the MDK family greeting card. I love Elliott’s halo. It reminds me of a friend who puts angel wings on photos of departed cats. Finally, who is Daisy, and how did I miss her addition into the family? Is she Liz’ dog?
Hi Laura! Yes, Daisy is my dog (aka The MDK Shop Dog). Kermit and Olive have shown her the wonder of yarn and hand knits. 🙂
What a fun mix of songs! I love that you have Leslie Odom Jr (who I will have to play again. And again), The Pogues, Vince Guaraldi, Elvis, and Squirrel Nut Zippers!… and so many more!
Annie Lennox, the Pogues, Vince Guaraldi! I’ve now got more Christmas spirit in me than I did before I read this article- thank you!!
The group Home Free has a video where they sing sing “Do You Hear What I Hear?”. I know we’re not talking about videos here at this time but that one is So uplifting! Just saying.
Am I the only one who feels that this must be the most bleak collection of christmas songs ever? I mean, even the normally happy songs are sung in a minor key, or with a downbeat feel. There’s even a song about domestic violence included!!
I mean, yes, some of them are beautiful, but I was hoping for a little more joy!
Definitely cruise through the other playlist we link to in this post–the all-Nashville playlist will give you a smile!
Thanks, not normally my thing music wise (country never quite as big here in the UK) bit I’ll definitely give it a go. Funny thing, I do tend to prefer singing the minor key carols, but perhaps not so much listening to them!!
Spent the morning baking to this list! Great! Had it saved from last year!
This would be my playlist from Hell, when about four exceptions.
Thanks for your music!!
Lordy Pete aren’t y’all cute. Happy Holidays!
