Editors’ Note: Voting for this round has closed. To vote in Round 2 click here. (Round 2 voting ends on Wed. 3/27 at 11:59 pm PST.)
Dear pattern-loving people of the world,
The great day has arrived.
Today, we hitch up our hip-waders and venture into a mighty river of talent represented by 64 knitting patterns.
It’s time to vote in Round 1 of MDK March Mayhem.
How to Vote
Please read the following carefully.
The ballot appears on the MDK March Mayhem bracket page.
Click over to the bracket here, then once there, you’ll click CLICK HERE TO VOTE NOW.
From these 64 patterns, voters must pick 32 patterns. It’s a difficult task. Be strong. Go with your heart. You must pick eight patterns in each of the four categories for your votes to register.
If you’d like to keep track of your picks on a printable bracket, download it here.
What’s Ahead: The Voting Schedule
Round 1: March 21-24. Vote for 8 in each category.
Round 2: March 26-27. Vote for 4 in each category.
Round 3: March 29-31. Vote for 2 in each category.
Round 4: April 2-3. Vote for 1 in each category.
Round 5: Championship. April 5-7. Vote for 1 pattern.
The Champion of MDK March Mayhem 2019 will be announced on Tuesday, April 9, 2019.
Thanks to all the designers who make this impossibly beautiful selection of patterns possible.
Show the love, y’all! Support these designers by buying their patterns. Vote your hearts out.
Love,
Ann and Kay
Maybe it’s too early in the morning, maybe I’m too old, maybe I just don’t get it… but I simply can’t figure out how to vote! When I click on “click here to vote” the page just reloads, when I click on the pictures, they just open, when I try to drag them over, nothing works…. help! Or I have to stalk you tonight at the Big Knit Night in Edinburgh!
It doesn’t work for me either. Maybe it is too early or not playing well with mobile devices?
Same here…doesn’t work on iPad/safari…
Hi Gabi, Heather and Laurel, thanks for your feedback and patience! We’ve since added a web link option to vote for rounds going forward to alleviate any issues people are experiencing with prior versions of operating systems in Chrome and iPad.
When a voting round is open, if you can’t see the voting embed at the bottom of the Mayhem page (by clicking: https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/march-mayhem/#votenow) you will now see a small blurb of text that says “Having trouble seeing the voting poll? Click here” and it will take you to a new page in your browser to vote directly on there.
Hope this helps and thanks for your patience! Round 3 opens tomorrow, so happy voting and happy knitting!
At the top of the bracket where you see the pictures there’s a prompt that reads in all caps CLICK HERE TO VOTE NOW! That one takes you to the ballot. Happy voting!
Very sorry I can’t raise the voting page either
Hi Pip–scroll down once you’ve clicked on CLICK HERE TO VOTE NOW–the ballot is down that page. Happy voting to you!
Nope, still no go! Third coffee hasn’t helped. It opens the voting grid but that won’t take the votes.

When I drag a “vote” over it doesn’t stick…
Hi Kim –When a round is open for voting there will be a big text block at the top of the page that says CLICK HERE TO VOTE NOW, which will take you down to the survey at the bottom of the page to submit your vote. (I included the link here, but it will only display the survey when the voting round is open. https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/march-mayhem/#votenow )
The top portion of the bracket page is informational only, you can find the Ravelry link to the pattern, a photo, our suggested yarns and why we love it. The actual voting portion of the bracket is a survey at the bottom of the page. (So no drag and drop on the top part of the page with the pictures.)
The voting instructions can be found in our post, which you can find linked on the home page or by clicking here: https://www.moderndailyknitting.com/mdk-march-mayhem-2019-round-1-vote/

Do not try to vote on the PDF file which is there for your reference only. Vote on the place where it says in red VOTE HERE. I have been having a ball with paper and pencil since our printer is presently indisposed. I love multiple choice. And am taking ample advantage of all your convenient links to research my pattern and yarn choices. Thanks Kay and Ann (and whoever does your computer stuff) for a very fun morning.
I love it! So glad to hear you’re enjoying having the paper bracket. (I love a paper bracket too to see how I do throughout!) Happy voting!
It doesn’t work for me on my desktop computer.

I just voted. I had all my pics lined up, so it went quick. Looking forward to seeing how my pics placed!
I had to use a different browser before it would work – no voting page showed up on Chrome, but Microsoft Explorer managed to bring it up.

I see now…
Just voted! Now I have to wait to see if any of my picks move forward. Ahhh! Too much fun this early in the morning.
For me, I got it to work using Safari after trying Google Chrome first which did not work. Try using a different browser until you find one that works.

I just realized how important this annual event has become to me: when I realized that I would be traveling today and not have enough time to consider my final choices, I studied it ahead of time, like a major exam! I feel very secure in what I chose 😉 Now to see how others felt!
Love that this is an annual tradition for you! We love it too 🙂
Not working. Tried all buttons many times.

i clicked on the “Vote Here” and it switched pages, but I never heard “how” one actually records their vote. Is one supposed to click and drag somewhere, type a name…? Thanks for your help!

Trying to vote. It’s not working on Firefox on a PC. I’ll have to try later on a different browser, or on my phone.

I had no problems on an iPad using Safari once I realized I needed to click on the Click Here to Vote Now button. A list of the patterns came up (have to scroll down to it) and just clicked in the box next to each pattern I wanted to vote for. Did have to go back and print the pdf pages so I had a picture of each pattern as I couldn’t remember what the patterns looked like by name. Could do the same thing by reviewing the original brackets online and jotting down the names you want to vote for before going to the actual Survey Monkey voting list. Thanks Ann and Kay for another fun March!
Yes, it happened to me too. No luck on the iPad but successful on the desktop computer.
I had no trouble using Chrome on my PC. “Click here to vote now” took me to the voting window, which has its own scroll bar and the names of the designs in each of the four categories, each with its own box to check. Probably worked because my coffee was particularly strong this AM.
I couldn’t access the ballot on Chrome on my desktop. I had to use Safari.
FYI: Voting doesn’t work in Chrome, but worked fine in Explorer. I was able to toggle back and forth between Chrome and Explorer so I could see the pictures.
Click to vote not working for me on an iPad either

I tried 4 different browsers now on my iPad and I phone and I still can’t vote, can you pls fix the problem?
I voted on my laptop and it worked fine. Last year I missed out because I wasn’t prepared, this year I’m not missing it! My friend and I shared our picks, we’ll see whose favorites advance!
browser: Safari works, Chrome does not

I tried three different browsers on my desktop computer with no luck. Also had no luck with my Android phone. But finally got to the ballot and voted successfully with my Android tablet.
I have so many projects because of a certain baby that is due in late July and his sister is only 19 months older. So I found a perfect Miss Mouse pattern for her and he will be receiving an appreviated Julia-Farwell blanket. Mom has been my psychiatrist for five years and I’ve known her since she was a resident and now she is teaching staff at the University. We have kept the boundaries between doctor and patient but after five years, she has become a friend who is half my age. She is taking a year leave and wants to learn to knit with two infants. I’ve shown her your website and she is really excited.
Wish me well as I am in school too.
Yahoo, my husband set up my coffee before leaving for work this morning and my Kindle fire took me right to the ballot. I didn’t name it My Brain for nothing. So many tasty choices, but the die is cast, let the games begin.
I have reread and tapped on the Click Here to Vote Now and it essentially just refreshes the page. I do not get a screen with little boxes to check or anything else. I am using an iPad as I am away from home. It is not working for me.

I’m experiencing the same thing as my fellow posters—the page reloads but doesn’t let me vote. Sooo eager to play!
I moved from Safari on my iPhone to Safari on my iMac. Magic! I could see and complete the Survey Monkey ballot without a problem. Yay!!
I love many of these patterns and would like to vote, but even clicking the all caps VOTE HERE doesn’t bring me to a page that will record and send any choices.

OOps! Shouldn’t the first round include Cardigans and not neck warmers???? I just went into vote and was surprised.
Each round includes all four categories. (This is kinda like March Madness, but not in the head-to-head competition way!)
No problem voting using Chrome on my Android tablet. Such fun, thanks Ann and Kay!
I had no issues with the iPad. Only problem was I wanted to vote for more than 8 cardigans. I think that was the hardest to winnow down. Anyway, thanks for the fun. Can’t wait until next week. I already had Papa printed. So, I am pulling for it. Just haven’t picked a yarn.
I carefully followed directions and had no problem voting using Chrome on my MacBook Pro laptop . My only issue was I didn’t find 8 patterns from the Neck & Shoulders category I was crazy about, like in other categories.
I didn’t have any issues voting on an iPad via Safari. I did just update my iPad last week so I wonder if some of those running into difficulties may not be using an up to date OS?
Ironically, I found Head and Hands the hardest category to winnow down to only 8. I just purchased Berrit as the designer is running a 50% off sale for March Madness, plus a couple other of her patterns I’d favorited before I was brave enough to try brioche.
Hi Megan – you’re spot on! The issues seem to be stemming from not running the most recent OS update. Glad you were able to vote smoothly!
Whew! I have until March 24th to make my Sophie’s Choices!
I cannot vote either on my iPad- I’m sad!
Hi Isabel, thanks for your feedback and patience! We’ve since added a web link option to vote for rounds going forward to alleviate any issues people are experiencing with prior versions of operating systems in Chrome and iPad.

SO. MANY. CHOICES.
Thank you for putting in the additional link at the bottom of the page for those of us having trouble accessing the “ballot “. I was able to vote after tapping on the teeny tiny print under the black type Vote Now at the bottom of the voting page. FWIW, my iPad was updated last week so I am using the most current update.
Hi Kellinkc, thanks for your feedback and patience! We’re glad the web link option to vote was able to work for you! It will be on rounds going forward to alleviate any issues people are experiencing with prior versions of operating systems in Chrome and iPad.

No problems voting on my Android phone! Too many beautiful choices, but no problem actually voting!
This is the first time I’ve participated and am wondering why there weren’t any sock pattern options? Just curious!
Just voted and even having the printed bracket was a bit confusing since the listing of patterns was not the same in the voting categories as on the brackets. Any chance they can be listed in the same order? Would help my poor middle aged brain that struggles with remembering things…. 🙂
Yes please
Hi Bikerfay and Skywarkweb,
For fairness, the designs appear in a different order on each ballot. This way the same patterns do not appear at the top of the list for everyone. (The display is coded to be randomized in the voting ballot.)
It will get easier in the next rounds, as the number of patterns gets smaller.
Voting for round 3 opens tomorrow! Happy voting and happy knitting!
Oh. My. Gracious! Finally voted. Was going back and forth between phone for viewing and I-pad for voting. Every category was challenging, but the cardigan category almost did me in -truthfully,, I want to knit them all!
Can’t wait to see the results!
I’d just like to say congrats on making these such tough choices, and a suggestion: could the tech people put the designs on the survey ballot in the same order as the thumbnails? Please?
Survey Monkey randomizes the order of the choices on each ballot, for fairness. Sorry for the inconvenience, but if the software didn’t do this the top entries in every bracket would have an advantage over the others.
Finding your picks on the ballot gets easier after the first round, when the choices are fewer.
