Dear everybody,

Two quick and tasty things to note.

Thing No. 1: Norah Gaughan Live! On Zoom! Free!

Launch party this Friday! We’re celebrating the arrival of the new Field Guide we have been impatiently awaiting. We’ll be talking with the designer we have admired for so very long, Norah Gaughan.

She is the most modest of geniuses, with a career that has taken her into so many cool directions. We’ll be getting into the designs and yarns of Field Guide No. 28, and generally basking in the opportunity to talk with her. Sign up here, and we’ll send you the Zoom link on the morning of the event.

Thing No. 2: Watch Jane Go

Sometimes the great thing is just a simple thing.

A band of intrepid knitters made 15 samples for the launch of Jane, our new yarn, and they sent all their leftovers back to us.

Is there anything more poignant than a pile of apparently leftover yarn?

All the 11 colors, in nubbiny cakes and balls, waving at me with a hearty “Pick us! We want a destiny too!”

You bet, random little balls of Jane! Welcome to your date with destiny!

So I did what happens when I have a set of colors and a powerful urge to cast on: I started a log cabin blanket.

It’s the simplest kind of log cabin: a square center, with strips added around it in whatever color seems like the right one. (If this looks like fun to you, Field Guide No. 4: Log Cabin is our complete guide to getting the hang of this sort of knitting. It is our favorite thing, pretty much. Endless creative possibility afoot here, fair warning.)

Needless to say, Jane appears in the new Field Guide. We’ll be talking about all that with Norah, the designer who can forever take credit for designing the first pattern using Jane.

We still can’t quite believe it. And we’ll get into it all this Friday, September 13, at noon Eastern time, on Zoom. Sign up right here, and we’ll send you a Zoom link.

Love,

Ann

PS Norah’s sweater (we know you’re wondering!) (isn’t it amazing?) is made with her own handspun yarn, in a design she will be releasing independently.

  • Is the zoom available on demand at a later time, please? I signed up but will be working.
    Thank You!

  • Those little balls of yarn make me think of such “scraps” used to make Izzy dolls to leave in public for others to come upon. Great use for leftovers!

  • I can’t watch live on Friday. Will Norah be available to watch later with a link?

    Many thanks,

  • I looked longingly at your Log Cabin blanket. I started one when I was waiting for my precious grandson. I knit and knit and when I realized it was wonky I ripped it back and put it in A bag.
It’s still waiting 24 years and counting! Your is gorgeous however
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Norah’s party on Friday!

  • Anything named Log Cabin is fun to the eyes. I have enjoyed knitting the log cabin dish rags and am currently weaving a table runner in the Log Cabin structure and loving it. (For weavers, see The Magic Dance Runner by Gist Yarns.) And your Log Cabin blanket is equally compelling! I have been saving leftovers and just might have to try that. Oh wait, maybe buy some Jane and make it more studied designerly color choices.

  • And very smart to put that RED in the middle!

  • I also love the log cabin blanket. Do you have a complete bundle of all Jane colors to make purchasing easier??

  • I love the sweater she is wearing. The colors are nice, however I am looking for a pattern like this one. A cardigan that isn’t wide at the top. What pattern is this? It doesn’t look any of the new ones.

    • If you read through the letter it tells you the info about the sweater at the end.

  • I love log cabining. Thank you for introducing me to it in your first book.

  • Will the zoom be recorded? I can’t be there “live”.

  • when will this field guide be available to order?

  • After looking through most of these comments, I wonder if I am signed up. I filled out a Google docs type form and received a notice “Field Guide 28 Launch Party” response has been recorded. I still don’t have a Zoom link though.

  • P.S. That is a GORGEOUS log cabin! Can we see more in progress pics?
