Ah, Peonies. A favourite flower. I’m really looking forward to our white ones too. They’re so late this year they are only just starting to form buds.

Just got a fig tree for Mother’s Day, what was I thinking? Now I think I need a peony!

Also, I heard that when you cut peonies to bring inside you should immerse the flower head in a bucket of water for a bit – ants like the peony flowers and this will get the ants off the flowers before you bring them inside so you don’t get ants in the house. Haven’t tried it myself, I still need to get a peony plant.

The older people here in my part of KY call these “pineys.” When I moved here, I had no idea what kind of flower a “piney” could be, but I was delighted with their version of the name.

Now that we are living in an apartment, I’ve had to resort to snitching one (or possible two or three) from the ones that grow in the alley where I used to walk our dog. Now that Murray is gone, I will have to think of another way to carry out this covert operation.

Also called Pentecost roses so should always appear about 8 weeks after Easter. By this year’s calendar, right on time. We will see if the Chicago peonies make the deadline – a couple days of 80 degrees might just do it.

Those are gorgeous. I don’t think I have anything quite so showy in my yard, but I am thrilled that I have both blueberry buds (well, for the flowers) and strawberry flowers. It looks like I might have a good amount of fruit this year after all!

Everything is late on the MA coast this year too. Tulips are out and scotch brooms are finally blooming, but much, much later than last year. (of course it stopped storming, so I’m not complaining!) LOVE the peonies.

Our Peonies are late this year, too. You are still about 2 weeks ahead of central Ohio. We have small, tight balls on the end of the stems.

When I was in Dijon, a (German) friend of mine got really upset when she came across some art that featured a recipe for New England ‘ponies’ — but it was actually ‘peonies’! Has anybody ever heard of people eating peonies? Are they ‘cabbage roses’ (or is that a certain kind of rose?)

–Diane H: Eastern Orthodox Easter was late this year, May 5th! does this mean we’re in for a new crop of peonies in another 8 weeks, or so? hope so, they’re lovely.

Having moved to the Middle East, I miss peonies the most. Three years ago my neighbor told me I had the best in the neighborhood and she was right. Oh, East Tennessee, my heart longs for you and the smell of flowers from the yard!

My childhood home in upstate NY had peony bushes lining the walkway up to the front of our house. I loved them so much and would always stop & smell the flowers on my way to and from school. That scent, those ants, the beautiful layers of flower petals. I haven’t really seen them since. Loved this reminder! Thanks.
