Postcard from the Backyard: A Cowl, Owls
A quick hello because I mostly want to get back to the backyard, where the fledgling owl flight training sessions are proving to be a great binge-watch for the long weekend. You can see a couple of their efforts on my Instagram feed here.
Here’s what kept me equally enthralled: Dianna Walla’s Leif Cowl, from MDK Field Guide No. 3: Wild Yarns.
(Everybody give Dianna a big congratulations on finishing her thesis! Huge! She’s going for an MPhil in theoretical linguistics! I wonder what it’s about! Does it have to do with the creation of Fair Isle cowl patterns?)
This Spincycle Dyed in the Wool continues to amuse and amaze. My hat’s off to Rachel Price and Kate Burge, the proprietors of Spincycle.
The Leif Cowl is off blocking at this point (in the Sensitive Compartmented Knitting Facility, aka a room with a door so that Kermit can’t come in and sit on my damp cowl).
You can see the Before situation here: kind of warbly.
I’ve knit enough Fair Isle at this point to know that this will all sort itself out in the blocking. Still, it’s an act of faith to see all this knitting looking so lumpy.
I’ll post the After once it’s dry.
We’ve been lobbing out kits for this project at a heartening rate. You can see the color options here. I like to think of all the knitters blowing a weekend watching yarn turn different colors. Between this and watching owls figure out their wings, it’s been a good weekend.
We’ll need a modelled shot … How long is this, does it dangle or snuggle? Lovely colours!

Ann, your cowl looks gorgeous! I have my yarn kit from MDK, but chose another colorway that I also like, but rarely would choose (working on making new choices). I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours.
I was looking at your owl videos over the weekend. Crazy amazing! I remember, also, years ago when you had pics of a bird and its nest, and all, on the blog. You sure have a lot of interesting goings-on in your backyard! Save going out for yarn (and provisions) you could well stay home and never be bored.
Oh, beautiful owlets… Shades of obsessive watching of Molly and McGee’s broods learning to use their wings.
I’ve loved these cowls since they were introduced but resisted because I had so much else on the needles, and the AYOT coming out each month as well. I’ve resisted long enough!!! Finally had to order the kit for myself :). No idea when I’ll get to it, but at least it will be in my stash, winking at me every time I open the door LOL!
