Say Hi to the Designer of Field Guide No. 28!
Oh, how we’ve been waiting for the moment when we can share this news. We almost let it slip a couple of times—we’re so excited, and so blabby.
Finally, we can say it!
The designer for MDK Field Guide No. 28 is:
Norah Gaughan.
Just in time for sweater season, this heavy hitter and blithe spirit is sweeping in with a collection of designs we cannot wait to get on our needles and in our closets.
Norah Gaughan has worn many hats in her starry career in knitting. From creative director at Berroco to Editor in Chief of Vogue Knitting magazine, she’s brought joy to knitters through countless acts of imagination. She knows what’s fun to knit, what’s new, what’s beautiful.
As a designer, she has created around 1,000 designs, a stunning body of work. A star for decades, Norah Gaughan has designed for every elite knitting publication—contributing more than 120 designs to Vogue Knitting magazine alone.
Her book Knitting Nature, her Knitted Cable Sourcebook, and her Twisted Stitch Sourcebook are blasts of inspiration and technique, and everlasting classics.
Norah’s latest book, Knit, Fold, Pleat, Repeat, features 36 sweaters and accessories inspired by origami, which combine simple, beginner-friendly shapes with clever folds and fastenings to delight knitters of all skill levels.
And—speaking of elite publications—we are beyond proud that Norah is the designer for MDK Field Guide No. 9: Revolution. We have loved knitting every one of those things, and we will continue to turn to it for years to come.
What new delights will Norah bring us in MDK Field Guide No. 28? What will be the theme?

Postscript: We know: You want to know about the sweater Norah’s wearing in the photo. All we are at liberty to say is that it is a design that Norah intends to publish independently, and that—astonishingly—the yarn is entirely her own handspun.
Oh my goodness! I am so ridiculously excited about this field guide!!! Yes!!!
What a brilliant coup! Can’t wait to see the designs.
Thrilled! Thrilled! Thrilled! My most-worn favorite hand knit cardigan of all time is from ‘Revolution.’ Can’t wait!!!
Wow! Very excited for the next guide! Sure helps with saying goodbye to a summer that seems to have past faster than any before.
I want that sweater! If she walks past me wearing it, she may find herself mugged. Gorgeous, gorgeous yarn.
What has she cooked up for us this time?
Omg! What a treat! She is a knitting world icon! Thank you!
This is terrific news!!! I can’t wait to get my copy. XO to MDK
I! Can’t! Even! Norah Gaughan is in the top three knitting superstars who turn me into a blithering idiot every time I see her. She’s a genius. Her Knitted Cable Sourcebook lives on my couch. It’s so much fun to play with.
I have a feeling that this is going to be a “go big or go home” situation.
Well this is exciting! And how did you know that my second thought was: that’s a great sweater she’s wearing—is there a pattern?

Bravo Kay & Ann, thrilled with this news!
I’m so excited! My first cardigan didn’t turn out very well and has been languishing on a shelf waiting to be either re-knit or given to a knit worthy friend. I had decided not to knit any more sweaters, until now! Can’t wait to get my Field Guide and find out more about Norah Gaughan.
First thing I thought was “I love that sweater!” I also have both her books mentioned and I love them, some of my favorite reference books. Love, love, love cables.
Oh her pattern is my best knitting story! I was knitting a sweater for my husband to be’s wedding gift. At 6 foot 9 inches he had never had a sweater with long enough sleeves to cover his wrist bones and dang it he was going to! Just a month short of the wedding and just short of finishing the sleeves – I lost the pattern. Eek! Contacted her pattern company just for that page, please please? Not only did they do so, they sent me a complete new copy with a congratulatory wish. (Or course I found the old pattern after the wedding. Of course)
♥️ ♥️ ♥️

I love the ad of Norah Gaughan. She’s wearing a stripped, boyfriend cardigan that I’m dying to knit. Can you please ask her how we can obtain the pattern? Many thanks!
