Announcing: The Shakerag Knitting Getaway 2023
Dear knitters near and far,
We’re happy to share the news that registration is now open for the 2023 edition of the MDK Knitting Getaway, a special session of famous Shakerag Workshops in Sewanee, Tennessee.
We cordially invite you to join us for a gathering that is a beautiful thing in a beautiful place. We promise you the most cordial welcome imaginable—we live for this chance to be with you. At the most recent Getaway in June, we welcomed knitters from more than 30 states, with many coming solo, knowing this is a welcoming, special place. If you’ve never had the chance to visit this part of the world, we really hope you’ll join us.
When: June 7-10, 2023.
Where: The campus of St. Andrews-Sewanee School in Sewanee, Tennessee, about 90 miles southeast of Nashville.

What: The Shakerag Knitting Getaway is a true escape: a few beautiful days for knitters to gather at the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee campus to enjoy good food, beautiful natural surroundings, knitting, and each other.
THIS IS THE PATH FROM THE CLASSROOMS TO THE DINING HALL.
There will be lots to do, or not.
You can sign up for every activity, or some, or none—exactly as you wish.
The constant will be relaxation and knitting in the company of knitters. We’re planning on laughing a lot.
The Schedule
Please note: the schedule is still in formation, but it’s going to go something like this.
Arrive on Wednesday afternoon in time for Happy Hour and a delicious supper in the dining hall.
On Thursday and Friday, all participants will have these options, with time to do them all if desired:
- Several different workshops with teachers you will love and admire.
- Swimming.
- Restorative yoga.
- Hikes in the beautiful forest of the Cumberland Plateau.
those two tiny people are shakeraggers, having the time of their lives.
Each evening will begin with a Happy Hour, followed by one of the locally sourced dinners for which Shakerag Workshops is beloved.
The Dining Hall is WHERE THINGS LIKE BREAD PUDDING SHOW UP.
Evening entertainment will be something where knitting is encouraged.
On Saturday morning, we’ll have one last delicious breakfast and say our goodbyes.
Why Are We Doing This?
Time is the greatest luxury. We crave the liberty of time spent close to nature, freed from the logistics of daily life, surrounded by friendly faces, in an ambiance that is both exciting and relaxing.
In short, it is a rare experience for which the word bliss actually seems accurate.
Everyone takes pictures of the coneflowers at Shakerag. It’s a rule.

Participation in the Shakerag Knitting Getaway is limited by housing availability. In 2023, due to dorm renovations at St. Andrews-Sewanee, housing will either be more limited, or more spread out, than in years past. Shakerag Workshops’ fearless leader, Claire Reishman, is making a determined effort to achieve a solution so that our weekend can accommodate the same number of knitters as in years past, even if a portion of our rooms will include a 2-mile shuttle bus ride to the day’s activities. Registration is open now. No payment is required to register.
Registration will close on August 22. Shakerag will notify registrants of their acceptance by early September, and partial payment will be due by September 15.
If there are more registrants than there is available housing (currently 60 people, double occupancy), participants will be selected by lottery, and remaining registrants will be placed on a waiting list. By January, Shakerag will know whether housing will be available for additional 40 participants, and if it is, they will contact people on the waiting list. Partial payment will be due upon acceptance.
What’s It Like At Shakerag?
For more photos and a taste of the Shakerag experience, here’s a peek at this year’s gathering. A lot of knitters come solo, which we encourage. Registrants must agree to Shakerag’s Covid safety policy to attend.

No truer words.
I’ll reinforce the part about no fear in coming solo. My first Shakerag Knitting Getaway was solo and a major step out of my social coward comfort zone. It was easy and welcoming and I had the time of my life.
As a solo attendee, I have never felt so relaxed (or so welcome) as I did at the Shakerag Knitting Getaway.
Jumping on the “go solo” train here. Don’t worry a smidge about it. Even if you know people going in, you’re still going to meet a ton of new folks.
I also have a quick question. I registered but didn’t get a confirmation. Should we expect one or did I screw up my registration. It was early and I was on my phone so I wouldn’t be surprised if I did.

Oh, I hope I will get in! I will just be completing my grad school and having a few precious weeks off before starting a new career. I would love to spoil myself, come solo, make friends, find some peace and calm, and give myself the gift of time to do what I love.
