How To
Something New to Learn: Cables!
Get ready, friends. We have great news.
Hundreds of you have participated in A Year of Techniques, the very clever teaching series from Jim and Jen Arnall-Culliford.
Now, we are chuffed to bits to announce something new coming from this pair.
It’s a series called Something New to Learn.
Imagine all the careful, thoughtful instruction that is the trademark of Jen and Jim, distilled into a new series of books that cover specific topics in depth.
Coming March 19, the topic will be cables, and it’s going to be glorious fun—a deep dive that is accessible and entertaining.
Something New to Learn about Cables is superjuicy—in flipping through it, we learned two amazing new tricks, just like that. It’s 88 pages stuffed to the rafters with how-to tutorials, fundamentals, tips, tricks, and absolutely straightforward instruction. We’re so proud to be offering this book, which comes with a Ravelry download code for the ebook edition.
We’re also excited about the yarn used for all the projects, CoopKnits Socks Yeah! DK. Which is really lovely stuff. Pick out your favorite colors, so you can get your cables cranking.
Learn While You Make Something Beautiful
The thing that sets Jen and Jim’s books apart is the way each project serves as a laboratory for trying out new techniques. It’s so much fun to end up with a beautiful hat rather than a pile of swatches.
Or a pair of mittens.
Something New to Learn about Cables includes varied levels of complexity, so that a new knitter and a veteran will both have plenty to learn.
Including cabled mitts so your fingertips can roam freely.
And a cowl or blanket with an astonishing pattern.
The Video Tutorials
Ten free video tutorials are a part of this series.
Jen is one of the more comforting, encouraging teachers anywhere. She is soothing. She is confident. She is many things we would like to be on a daily basis. Most of all, she knows tons about knitting, so her approach is built on an encyclopedic understanding.
These quick videos make Something New to Learn about Cables a very cool way to learn.
The Projects
Jen and Jim have recruited two designers whose work is always fascinating: Lucy Hague and Rachel Coopey.

The Yarn
All the patterns in the book call for a new yarn we’re thrilled to offer: CoopKnits Socks Yeah! DK, which is a beautiful, versatile yarn. As you can see from the photos above, it makes gorgeous, dimensional cables. Here are the shades we’re carrying.
Socks Yeah DK: Minos, Anemoi, Aeacus, Morpheus, Astra Planeti, Demeter
Skein quantities for each project are included in our listing for this yarn, here.
The Conversation
Part of the fun of Jen and Jim’s world of learning is their lively group on Ravelry, where the conversation never ends. We encourage you to hang out and share your work there.
We’re eager to get started, and hope you’ll join us as we twist our way through one of knitting’s most satisfying, addicting techniques.
