Friends!

Today’s the day!

If you’ve ever dreamed of knitting something cute for absolutely everyone on your love list, including yourself, the Bunchalong is going to help you achieve it.

The concept: fun projects, from Field Guide No. 8: Merry Making, in bunches. Plenitude, generosity, abbondanza. More is more.

You will feel: inspired, motivated, like a real can-do knitter who GETS STUFF DONE.

Living the dream: two knitters knit up all these appleseed mitts in the blink of an eye. (The yarn: Jill Draper’s windham.)

Permission to indulge in potato-chip knitting: granted. Knit a pattern until it is burned into your memory like the words to that hand-clapping game from third grade. If a pattern is fun the first time, it is twenty times funner the twentieth time. (FACT.)

The fastest hat ever: the Slip-Stitch Cap. (Yarn: Neighborhood Fiber Co. Studio Chunky.)

You will have: a veritable klatch of knitters to keep you company, in the Lounge, on Instagram, on Ravelry, on the bus, pretty much everywhere you go. (Stay alert: one of us might pop up in the way-back of the minivan on the school run, just to make sure you’ve got a properly loaded project in a ziplock in the glove compartment.)

There will be: weekly prizes, from October 8 through December 24. Really great prizes!

Appleseed Coasters: hardly any knitting at all. (The yarn: Jill Draper’s Windham.)

The Rules

Begin, continue, or finish any project or projects, chosen from among Thea Colman’s five brilliantly addictive designs in Field Guide No. 8. The goal here is mutual support and momentum sharing. We knit more when we see other people knitting. It is so contagious.

A pile of Chalice Cowls is extremely photogenic, just saying. (the yarn: Julie asselin’s douillet.)

We have a fresh, new topic over in The Lounge, Bunchalong 2018. Share your strategies, lists, accomplishments, and photos. We will Like every single one of them!

The Gift Tags

Whatever you do, please be sure to download our free gift tags.

The Stranded Diamonds Hat comes in six sizes, from WEE to adult. (The yarn: Shalimar’s Enzo Aran.)

The Hashtag

#MDKbunchalong on Instagram.

The Prizes

For the first time, we’re giving prizes of $50 credit in the MDK Shop. Each week, we’ll award a $50 shop credit to someone who posts a photo of their Bunchalong progress in any one (or all) of three ways: in the Lounge, on Ravelry (be sure to name the pattern on your project page), or on Instagram using the hashtag #MDKbunchalong.

The Deadline

Midnight, December 24. At which point we will declare that it’s time to mix up a refreshment (recommended: Thea’s Merry Sangria, recipe in Field Guide No. 8) and enjoy the last week of the year.

Let the plotting and planning begin, and we look forward to October 8, when we’ll award the first prize!

  • Got my eye on making some mitts and hopefully a Challis cowl or two. Great idea to start so early and go up until 12/24.

  • Started my first Appleseed MIT last night. Let the knitting begin!

  • OMG I have just cast on a Hugo Poncho in Casablanca from Cascade plus an Anish shawl and want to finish my Vitamin D sweater that I am making out of silky-wool so you inspire me to knit like a fool this month.

  • Help I cannot wear wool on my forehead

    • Me either, need a ‘tips and techniques’ on how to add a stretchy lining to woollen headband!

      • I recently made a “very PDX hat” (on Ravelry) that uses a provisional cast-on to create a 2-layer brim for a hat. I wonder if something like that might work for you.

  • Boo hoo I only have one appleseed Mitt done so far. I an having carpal tunnel surgery tomorrow so I can’t knit again for 2 weeks. But I will be back with a stack of these mitts soon after that. I found the first one fun and addicting.

  • I can’t figure out how to join. I have been busy on a new house, an old 1800 house which means I will be busy for the rest of my life!. I would love to join and do a couple of these project.
