Greetings, friends! This week, we are taking you on a whirlwind tour of the clever projects Cecelia Campochiaro designed for MDK Field Guide No. 19: Marls. Today: the Striped Marl Hat.

If you’re new to marling, come on through: this project is your E-Z pass to a new technique. It’s also a snappy hat that someone in your life will claim before it’s even off the needles.

Meet the Striped Marl Hat by Cecelia Campochiaro: two skeins of Woolfolk’s luxurious Tynd add up to 3 different colors: two are solid and one is stylishly bespeckled.

Two strands of Tynd, knit to a firm gauge, make for a suave, dense fabric that photographs don’t quite convey.

Fold the brim for a beanie look, or leave the brim in a single layer, for a slouchier fit.

And not for nothing, but this little project is begging to be knit in multiples. And where there are multiples, there are leftovers, and where there are leftovers, there are opportunities for even more marl-mixing.

Tynd is a newcomer to the MDK Shop. Based on Cecelia’s rave reviews, we brought in Tynd for the Striped Marl Hat and also for a mysterious project called the Swarf—which we’ll talk about later. Tynd is a dreamboat of a yarn: pure merino, of such a high micron count that it could be mistaken for cashmere. It’s a yarn with a storied pedigree—read all about it here.

Knitting is believing! If Tynd is new to you, the Striped Marl Hat is a great test-drive for two skeins.

  • Tynd is the most wonderful yarn – softer than cashmere! I’ve used it for cowls and hats and it is simply divine!

  • Can a 73 year old get away with a slouch hat? Wish I was braver on the what-to-wear spectrum!

    • Try it! I just made a slightly slouchy hat for my 75-year old mother, who is undergoing chemo but was disliking the look of the close-fitting “chemo cap.” She wasn’t sure she could pull it off, but ended up really liking the looser fit and how it framed her face differently.

    • Yes, a 73-year old can, and it will look wonderful on you!!!

  • Question – In photos, the “slate” hat looks very blue, as in color 16. But the pattern calls for colors 31 and 32. Is either 31 or 32 bluer than it looks? Thanks!

    • Hey Pam! You aren’t the first to ask, I believe the colors are actually 32 and 33. It’s actually gray in person, so if you are looking to go blue, I’d choose either 16 or 11 instead of one of these.

  • Does the yarn have the speckled and solid already in the skein?
