Dear knitter,

Welcome to your Saturday!

We would love to welcome you to Nashville in December.

One of our favorite artists and makers, Jan Quarles, is coming to MDK World Headquarters for two days of in-depth indigo dyeing workshops.

On December 8, we’ll kick the weekend off at MDK World Headquarters with a festive Friday evening of shopping the aisles of our warehouse just in time for the holidays. This gathering is open to all.

For indigo aficionados, it will just get better on Saturday and Sunday, December 9 and 10. In small hands-on classes with Jan, a legendary teacher and indigo artisan, we’ll dive into the techniques of shibori and katazome.

Find out all the details and register here. Spaces are very limited for this workshop, so if a deep blue weekend is calling to you, don’t sleep on it! Field Guides Subscribers got to sign up first! It’s never too late to get in on the benefits of subscribing here.

Meanwhile . . .

We had a big time on MDK this week.

What in the world is a nervous doily? Read all about it in Franklin Habit’s latest letter from Paris.

Every sweater tells a story. Jeni Hankins took us with her on a day trip to see the amazing collection of Gyles Brandreth.

Old dog, meet new trick—Kay discovers a brand-new concept called swatching.

We sang the praises of Lorilee Beltman, one of the best and brightest—and calmest—knitting teachers we know.  Apparently you all agree with us—our upcoming colorwork workshop with Lorilee has now sold out, but we’ve got more virtual workshops in the works, so stay tuned!

It’s a marshmallow that Ann has been waiting to eat for ages. Check out her color scheme for a bewitching, murky version of Dee Hardwicke’s Autumn Garden Stole.

Not only does DG Strong think this Roald Dahl adaptation is wonderful, he thinks you can knit to it almost like a radio play.

Remember to enter this week’s giveaway by midnight Central time Sunday night. The prize? Field Guides Subscription 2023!

As ever, we thank you for supporting this beloved, handcrafted enterprise. Every morning, we bring the best in knitting to you, fresh and hot. This is made possible by your purchases from the MDK Shop—thank you!

We urge you to support what you love, and have a great shopping experience while you’re at it. Thank you for keeping us going.

Questions? Email us anytime at hello@moderndailyknitting.com, and you’ll get a prompt personal response from a real live MDK person.

Stay healthy, take care of each other, and knit on.

Love,

Ann and Kay

A Blue Holiday

One of our favorite artists and makers, Jan Quarles, is coming to MDK World Headquarters in Nashville for two days of in-depth workshops, December 9 and 10. Plus, join us for a festive evening of shopping the aisles of our warehouse just in time for the holidays.

We’re ecstatic to have this special time with Jan, where we’ll dive deep into the amazing techniques that Jan has masterfully honed throughout her years as an Indigo artist. Here’s the link to the registration page. Spaces are very limited!

About Jan

Jan Quarles is a legendary teacher in the world of natural dyeing. We are extremely lucky that she is joining us for this special weekend. This is your opportunity to explore the fascinating world of indigo dyeing with a truly delightful, inspiring teacher. We love every minute we get to spend with Jan, and you will too.

There’s a lot going on.

Our upcoming virtual workshops for October and November have sold out, but fear not: we’ve got more fun plans in the works. Keep up with all our events—virtual and in-person—on the events page. And stay tuned—first notice of new events goes to MDK Field Guide Subscribers, and then to our Snippets email mailing list.

A New Season!

Knit Stars Season 8 launches on November 1 and features designers and makers whose presentations will inspire and energize your knitting. Earlier seasons are available too. We were Knit Stars in Season 3 and we loved our experience. Our affiliate link here takes you to Knit Stars to learn more and to enroll in Seasons 1 through 8!

THE GREAT BOTANICA KNITALONG

Kay is swatching. We repeat—KAY GARDINER IS SWATCHING. The Great Botanica Knitalong has begun and we’re diving in to Dee Hardwicke’s stunning projects. Colorwork is the sort of knitting that makes us feel a) creative, b) clever, and c) happy. And these projects are all pretty much sunbeams of joy, so we hope you’ll join us.

There are six glorious projects in Field Guide No. 25: Botanica—ranging from a quick cowl to a throw for the ages. Choose your project to match your mood. We’ve done something we’ve never done before: we’ve created six yarn bundles, one for every design in this Field Guide. See them all right here.

Cottage Throw. This is one of the most glorious designs we’ve ever seen. Six color stories and a modern set of motifs combine to create a treasure for you to love. This yarn bundle is truly special.

Climbing Vine Mitts. A quick project. Your thumbs will thank you.
Treeline Cowl. We were gobsmacked when Dee showed us this colorway of Barn Red, Seaglass, Navy, and Pebble.

Blossom Stripe Shawl. A band of flowers trails across a field of stripes. Love this. In two colorways. Or create your own from our palette of 100% Rambouillet Atlas.

Flora Arm Warmers. Fun, quick, a perfect welcome to autumn.

Autumn Garden Stole. Sophisticated color here, such a forever piece.

  • Many years ago when I was married to a physician who would allow me to attend anything to do with knitting and our children were of a manageable age.. I went from Denver to Pitney, VT and enjoyed the surroundings so different from out West.
We dyed yarns with random spray bottles of colors and then let them dry in the sun. The contrast between the white steeples, the blue sky and the yarns was unforgettable and a memory that I will treasure forever.
