Felted Boxes
By Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne

Soft but sturdy square boxes of felted wool, which nest neatly when not in use. Useful, and kind of designer-y.

One of the things that we’ve wished for is a knitted storage container. The wicker basket has been overdone, and they’re too snaggy and scratchy anyway. Felted bowls and bags make excellent storage, but square containers have a cleaner look, and fit more tidily on shelves and in drawers.
It took some engineering to figure out how to make knife edges that would felt squarely, as these do. The result was this set of nesting Felted Boxes. They remind us of a set of 1950s Pyrex bowls. We like the way the handles on all four sides make them resemble mini-crates. We like the corrugated texture that comes from garter stitch. Boxlike. Practical. For the past ten years Kay has had a set on her bedside table to organize all the things.
