By Ann Weaver
$99.00 – $149.00
Please join us on February 7 for an exciting virtual workshop with Ann Weaver. We’ll be learning mosaic knitting, a hot new technique—just kidding, it’s a hot old technique!— and making the fabulously chic Pines and Needles shawl. Join us! The class includes a bundle of Ann’s exquisite hand-dyed yarn, if you choose to include it. We think it’s some of the most subtle, brilliant yarn we’ve ever seen.

Date: Friday, February 7, 2025
Time: Noon-3:00 p.m. Eastern time
Location: Zoom. This is a virtual event.
The Class
We will dive into the Pines and Needles Shawl with demonstrations of your two edging options—which will you choose? Then we’ll set off on a mosaic knitting adventure, learning the fundamentals of this versatile technique.
During class time, we’ll work through the beginning of the shawl—also known as the trickiest part. By the end of the workshop you’ll be on your way to more relaxing, satisfying mosaic knitting and a beautiful shawl.
The Project
The striking herringbone pattern of the Pines and Needles Shawl makes it a perfect first mosaic knitting pattern. It’s also a glorious accessory for any wardrobe.
Finished Dimensions: 62″ (157.5 cm) wingspan x 26″ (99 cm) depth
Our Workshop Leader
Ann Weaver has been teaching and designing knitwear for over 15 years. When she’s not traveling to teach or explore thrift stores and estate sales, you’ll find her in Baltimore, where she works as an editor and runs Plied Yarns. Mending, dyeing, sewing, and piecing—she uses all her skills to give her finds new life. She loves inspiring and empowering students in individualized, laid-back workshops.
What’s in the Box?
Your kit will contain four skeins (two each of two colors) of Plied Yarns 100% non-superwash wool, fingering weight yarn—spun in New Hampshire and hand-dyed in Baltimore, in your choice of three colorways.
You’ll Also Need
The pattern is not included. Purchase it here on Ravelry before class.
You also need a U.S. 5 (3.75mm) circular needle in the 32″ (80cm) length
Workshop Q & A
Is the Pines and Needles Shawl suitable for beginners? We think so! This workshop is within the reach of a beginner knitter with a few projects under their belt, and with these skills: cast on, knit, purl, basic increases and decreases.
Do I have to order the kit in order to participate in the virtual workshop? No. You can participate in the workshop with or without a kit. Click on “Choose an option” and select the one you want. If using your own yarn, we recommend choosing two shades with high contrast, so that the pattern will be legible, although a lower-contrast version would have its own subtle beauty.
How should I get ready for the workshop? If you want to purchase a Pines and Needles Shawl kit, make sure to order while supplies last, and by no later than January 24. Please note that supplies are limited, and we will not be able to reorder these kits before the workshop.
Your order confirmation email will include a PDF with the Zoom link for the workshop, a Ravelry link so you can purchase the Pines and Needles Shawl pattern, and a list of supplies.
We’ll send email reminders as the event gets closer, but do save the PDF so you’ll have all the information handy.
What’s the format? With Ann’s instruction and an overhead camera focused on her hands, we’ll learn her mosaic technique. You will have the option to practice and learn with a swatch, or cast on right away for your shawl. Participant mics will be muted most of the time, and the chat box will be monitored constantly for questions from participants.
How far along in my shawl can I expect to get during the workshop? While we of course will not complete the full shawl during the two-hour session, each participant will leave with the confidence to tackle mosaic knitting and well on their way to making the Pines and Needles Shawl.
When will the kits ship out? Kits are in stock and will ship immediately from Nashville, Tennessee. Please note that shipments to addresses outside the U.S. may not arrive in time for the live workshop on February 7.
I can’t make it to all of the live Zoom session. May I still participate? Yes! Everyone enrolled in the workshop will receive a link to the recording and all resources we share.
What if I want to work at my own pace? That’s perfectly fine; some students may opt to watch the live session and start knitting afterwards. The session recording will be available to participants indefinitely.
